Legend has it that Mario Vargas Llosa was notified of winning the Nobel Prize while working in the Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library. Vargas Llosa has worked on at least two of his novels here-The Storyteller and The Dream of the Celt-and while teaching at Princeton he spent afternoons off here reading. This year, in celebration of his new novel, The Neighborhood, the titan of contemporary Western literature travels from the stacks to the stage to discuss his life in letters.

Magnificent writer, indeed! Vargas Llosa assumed Hugo's "temptation of the impossible" to create a whole universe (a convincing simulacrum-universe) between the covers of a book.. and he achieved it many times. Desde que leí «La ciudad y los perros», allá en mi adolescencia, quedé cautivado por la magia de don Mario, por su maestría técnica y su vigor narrativo, y desde entonces he leído todo lo que he podido de él, desde sus novelas hasta sus ensayos y artículos. Hoy, en el ocaso de su vida, Vargas Llosa puede sentir la satisfacción de haber cumplido su sueño juvenil de entregarse a la literatura en cuerpo y alma, como un antiguo oficiante o un místico se consagraban al culto o a la vida ascética, y que a punta de esfuerzo, disciplina de hierro y una mirada siempre crítica (sin importar los enemigos gratuitos que esa actitud le costara), ha logrado dejar una importante huella en la historia de las letras. Y, por cierto, qué grata sorpresa escuchar al principio de la entrevista los compases que abren el último movimiento de la Segunda Sinfonía de Gustav Mahler, una de mis experiencias artísticas (y filosóficas) más intensas y memorables. ¡Saludos!
