Carving a beautiful handrail for Victorian stairs

Just throwing together a nice handrail for my 160 year old stairs.
I mentioned in the video that it would originally have had a very basic handrail here, but this is just an assumption, none existed when we bought the house and when I stripped this wall back to the masonry I didnt see any evidence of fixings etc so it may well have not had any rail at all! There is a very basic handrail going into the cellar, so it seems strange to skimp on one for this staircase.

I have been doing wood work and furniture restoring for years. But when I saw those crazy angles and saw just how easily you coped and transcribed it all I just wanted to crawl into a corner and start hitting nails into a bit of wood while I mumbled softly to myself. Truly awesome job.

my farther was a joiner a very skilled one, on a sideline he made long case clocks in beautiful mahogany, he always wanted me to learn joinery, but at the time was not interested being only 15 years old, sadly he died at the age of 38 years, and when i think back, i wish i had listened, i am 50 years old and there is not a day i don't think about him, love your attention to detail, the banister was a work of art

Mate I cannot tell you how impressed I am. I'm a boat builder and your use of patterns and projected lines filled me with joy and there were so many times when I was applauding your work. That bandsaw jig was something special and I know one day in the future with the right project I'll make my own version. A truly inspiring video of a craft I thought had been lost years ago. My grandad was foreman joiner for Ernest Moulsons builders from Guiseley. He made the entrance doors to the Crown pub in Ivegate, Bradford. I believe it (and the doors) are still there. Craftsmanship this good should be preserved for eternity. Well done but don't forget to pass on your skills to the next generation of joinery craftsmen (or women) before they are lost forever.

Carving on the tricky transition piece reminded me of boat school tricks. There we were taught how to divide the sides of square sectional stock into thirds to shape a tapered mast. I suspect some boatwright influence. beautiful work, excellent presentation. Thanks.

That is the most beautiful piece of woodwork I think I have ever seen, I have seen a lot of banisters in stately homes but none of them are as god as this. You have overcome the difficulty of the shape of the stairs and produced a piece of art. Very well done.

Amazing work, the sapele is a beautiful wood choice for this project. SketchUp is not cheating, it’s just another tool used by a skilled craftsman. I have been watching your work for about a year now and am often amazed at your solutions to problems encountered, the tripod was genius. All this measuring and angles is doing my head in. I have a condition almost like a form of dyslexia, which makes it very difficult to orient direction and visualise things. This handrail and the stairs are gorgeous.
