But obviously it should be quite clear that liberal democracies would naturally 'back' political parties with liberal democratic values, just as communist/autocratic governments would support political parties in the same spectrum of political ideologies as them. There's nothing wrong with this per se. The ANC has been receiving overt and covert support from Iran and Russia for many years. Landsberg trying hard to equate today's challenges to 1994. He's ignoring that this just the reality of 30 years of bad government and a maturing democracy and electorate which still has a long way to go however. Without actual evidence he's starting to tread on conspiracy territory or at least giving outside actors to much credit. Rating agencies will always comment positively on circumstances which they believe are favourable to the markets, I.e. money. If foreign capital markets should have such an influence in a modern yet broken SA is a different conversation.
