A lot of professional musicians in the business can do that. My friend is a musician for hire for piano and guitar and drums and he can play any song on the spot or figure it out very quickly. He gets hired to be a fill-in for music groups when one of their band members is sick or needs a break from the tour. He also gets paid to come in to a studio to play for artists who are working in the studio. He once got paid to play instrumental for Adele when she was in the studio experimenting with new songs she was still writing. He said she was super nice and even asked his opinion on stuff. He signed an NDA, did the work and got a check. When he gets hired for a job like that, he’s expected to immediately be able to play on the support and provide high quality instrumental support. One time, a guitarist for Steven Tyler’s band broke his hand the night before a concert. He knows the manager so the manager called him, flew him out to the concert venue and he arrived right when they were doing soundcheck and immediately started playing in the band. And there hundreds of guys like him so it’s about doing a good job and building relationships and being well-liked. Sometimes when they put together a band, they pull from this pool of free lance musicians. Sometimes they end up being permanent members of the band. But they’re meant to be plug-and-play. Many of them are working on their own music and use this work to get their foot in the door and make relationships with people in the industry. A lot of them hope to become permanent fixtures for famous singers and artists. If a famous singer likes you, you’ll get hired to come back again and again-and the hope for many is that they get offered a long term contract to be in a famous singer’s back up band. The pianist on American Idol definitely has a great gig because he gets seen on TV and I bet there were dozens of talented hired-gun musicians who applied for that gig

They rehearse ya daft bugger 😂😂. All the contestants bring a couple of songs, the musicians practice with the contestants. And then, when each audition happens the musician who practiced those tunes accompanies.
