The next gen Nissan Leaf is on its way, and it's bringing some big changes! Nissan is shifting away from the traditional hatchback design, leaning toward a more SUV/CUV form factor to compete in today’s EV market. But will it still be the affordable, practical EV it's known for? Let's break down the latest prototype sightings, potential specs, charging upgrades, and what this means for Nissan’s EV future.

They should really be going for a segment with less competition like small trucks

Agreed. #1 to me is low MSRP. I bought my Ioniq6 new for 38K a year ago for that reason. I wanted new and inexpensive for an EV.

I think the way to go with a low-end EV is small battery, very fast charging, efficient at highway speeds. The Leaf has already solved low cost commuter EV for home chargers. But very bad outside that role, so a lot of people would need a second car, there go all the savings. Big batteries are too expensive, heavy and bulky. But a 50 kW battery that charges very fast from 10 to 80% makes long distance travel possible a few times a year. That's good enough.

I still own a 2016 SL that’s on permanent loan to my 87-year-old MIL and she loves it for around DFW area. I previously owned a 2023 SV + I used for work in CA. Love the way it drives but the styling not so great and not having decent dc charging for occasional use, and funky cargo area were for me big downsides. Upsides: 360 camera, iPedal, very easy to drive, shallow learning curve/great for switching between EV/ICE/PHEV, lower price if bought “right” or leased, and general build quality. So what I’d like to see and might lease or buy is something that looked more like the concept car and maybe had LFP battery with NACS.

I just reviewed the outgoing Leaf on my channel after driving it for a month. It’s not a bad car, but just feels woefully outdated

I just watched "revenge of the electric car", some good Leaf content in there. Especially interesting to look back, given the state of Nissan today.

Great video, really good info; only thing is....don't do them in your room. Choose any place in your house, except your room, worst....in front of your bed. Apart of that, really good info always!!

I'd rather they just made it long and a wagon. When will NA get a good cheap EV true wagon?

Outside of Subaru, wagons don't sell well. Look up the sales numbers for Volvo. The XC 60 had total sales of 18,000. The V60 + V60 CC had total sales of 2,000.

I'd be surprised if it charged above 100kW. I don't have much faith in Nissan...RIP

The concept Looks like a Model Y clone... so literally just chasing the market. The prototype is somehow uglier AND less practical.. I get that it's in camo, bit that doesn't disguise the general shape. I can't believe that anyone at Nissan surveyed any existing Leaf customers and any of them said they wanted less storage space. They literally had 15 years to plan thier followup. Sign. If they can keep the price around $30k and get at least 250 miles that will be it's main selling point. I wouldn't expect great charging or features.

You’re kidding yourself to think this will charge above 70kw or have a good curve. I’m estimating 75 kw peak and 40 minutes 10-80 at best

It is a bit pendantic, but he said "mass market" and not "mass produced". The i-Miev was originally restricted to just the Japanese market.
