I was working at Apple at this time when Gil Amelia was CEO. He wasn’t totally incompetent. He worked really hard to save Apple while competitors pressed to buy Apple or see it gone. And after being smart enough to not put Copland on top of NT, and realizing BeOS would be too.much work to save Apple, he knew what he had to do. Even inside Apple EVERYONE wanted Jobs back. There was a printed picture of Jobs on the wall on my floor with the caption “Our Leader” and this was 1995! But we never thought it would ever happen. Got to give Gil and Ellen Hancock credit for this. The day the NeXT deal happened was a joyous day. We knew Apple would survive and thrive in time.

Were you there when Spindler was CEO?
@TheSteveSteele5 жыл бұрын
runforit420 Spindler was just about to leave when I got there. For my first few months I was just so happy to be there that I didn’t really pay attention to the politics. Most of us weren’t really thinking about it as far as I remember. That came a few months later and happened fast. Gil came in, then the rumors of Apple’s demise followed a little later and lay offs were being planned. I got out before anything could happen and ended up at Motorola working with their Power PC planning and management group. I still wanted to be close to what Apple was doing and that was my best shot at that time. Either that or one of the clone manufacturers. In fact, most of my friends ended up at Power Computing. That company was like Apple 2.0. Lot of cool former Apple people were there who really wanted to help Apple. They were a positive bunch.

NeXT is a failed computer company? In what way? A NeXT computer is what ran the internet. It's what revolutionized networking.
@ferrreira5 жыл бұрын
NeXT had customers like Chrysler, NASA, American Airlines, AT&T, Bank Of America, among many other huge companies, how is that a failed company?
@morten14 жыл бұрын
It didn't fail, but as a manufacturer of workstation-class personal computers it wasn't a success. I guess: timing, too ahead of time, and waaay too expensive. But it was a success and important in some ways. And the OS was a big stone in building up the next Apple we know today Also, the time with NeXT made Steve Jobs a much more humble experienced CEO.

Morten Yep! NeXT technology is STILL at the heart of Apple’s flagship platforms, including not only macOS, but iOS (including HomePod), watchOS, and tvOS! I’ve developed for each of those OSes, and the Yellow Box (now known as Cocoa) discussed here is still a game-changer.

Robert Maclean Yep, as the XNU kernel, AFAIK, is based Mach, but with several inclusions from FreeBSD (and likely other BSDs too).

Jobs being fired made Apple what it is today. He started NeXT and Pixar both gave him experience that Apple would need. Jobs understood mobile devises were the further as seen in Japan. You notice the iPod nano, iPod, iPod touch, iPhone hardware and an interface application iTunes that worked on any OS. then he moved to Intel based chips. All this in 7 short years. It's amazing how much they really got done and how it changed the market of computing. one reason every other hardware company copie

Retrospectively, we lost so many features and promises over the years that we never did, in the end, open up to multiple architecture markets. Kinda sad to see the Mac still warded off in its own enclosure.

This video is a perfect example of the state of Apple's chaos and disfunction, and Steve Jobs' calm, steady leadership breaking through. I can't imagine the cringe and rage that Steve was holding in having to watch that reprehensible demo of the 20th Anniversary Macintosh (and Gil Amelio's annoying clapping throughout this entire keynote). This shows you what Apple was and what it became under Steve Jobs. I don't know how he made such a massive undertaking look easy, but he did it, and I thank him for it. RIP Legend!

The irony of everyone making fun of Gil’s “Sinking ship” analogy is that it actually does make sense. Apple WAS a sinking ship. And his job WAS to point it in the right direction. And that right direction was to Steve Jobs, so that he could rescue it. Many people trash Gil. But he arguably made the greatest decision in consumer electronics history by bringing Steve Jobs back.
@DanielWesleyKCK12 жыл бұрын
Gil was CEO for about 1.5 years, he didn't really have enough time to screw anything up. It was a sinking ship when he jumped on, and it was a sinking ship when he got thrown off.
