I was working at Apple at this time when Gil Amelia was CEO. He wasn’t totally incompetent. He worked really hard to save Apple while competitors pressed to buy Apple or see it gone. And after being smart enough to not put Copland on top of NT, and realizing BeOS would be too.much work to save Apple, he knew what he had to do. Even inside Apple EVERYONE wanted Jobs back. There was a printed picture of Jobs on the wall on my floor with the caption “Our Leader” and this was 1995! But we never thought it would ever happen. Got to give Gil and Ellen Hancock credit for this. The day the NeXT deal happened was a joyous day. We knew Apple would survive and thrive in time.

Were you there when Spindler was CEO?
@TheSteveSteele
@TheSteveSteele 5 жыл бұрын
runforit420 Spindler was just about to leave when I got there. For my first few months I was just so happy to be there that I didn’t really pay attention to the politics. Most of us weren’t really thinking about it as far as I remember. That came a few months later and happened fast. Gil came in, then the rumors of Apple’s demise followed a little later and lay offs were being planned. I got out before anything could happen and ended up at Motorola working with their Power PC planning and management group. I still wanted to be close to what Apple was doing and that was my best shot at that time. Either that or one of the clone manufacturers. In fact, most of my friends ended up at Power Computing. That company was like Apple 2.0. Lot of cool former Apple people were there who really wanted to help Apple. They were a positive bunch.

Amelio doesn’t get enough credit for being the surgeon that correctly diagnosed Apple, cast about objectively for a brain donor, found Jobs and NeXT, and did the transplant. This operation (seen here in all its chaotic awkwardness) created modern Apple. Without him, the patient would have died and been just a footnote in history.

Amelio was a corporate doctor. Apple at that time had been a pack of arrogance. Even the Cupertino school system planned on scrapping their Apple lineup. Because nothing worked. The first thing Gil did when the board asked him to step down and take the reins for a while was set up a Mac right out of the factory in his office. It didn't work. In November 1996 Amelio started discussions with Steve Jobs' NeXT, and bought the company on February 4, 1997, for $429 million. During Amelio's tenure Apple's stock continued to slump and hit a 12-year low in Q2 1997 that was at least partially caused by a single sale of 1.5 million shares of Apple stock on June 26 by an anonymous party who was later confirmed to be Steve Jobs.

I'm as much of a fan of Jobs as anyone - I've been since the 80's - way before most fanboys. But all the shit talking of Gil is a bit much. He's no Steve Jobs, and made a lot of stupid moves, but he took over a company that was a heaping pile of Scully and Schindler shit at that point, and he actually made some moves that saved Apple after two disastrous CEOs just about killed it, most significantly by bringing Steve Jobs back, that saved Apple. History should judge him better if only for that fact.

Gil stemmed the bleeding losses left by Spindler. I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but if you want to look at incompetent, look at Michael Spindler - he was more interested in finding a strategic partner for Apple than championing the Mac. Granted Sculley was probably on autopilot from 1990 to 1993, except for the AIM (Apple-IBM-Motorola) agreement for the PowerPC, which was a very good idea at the time.

@Ryan M Absolutely. They judge him unfairly - he did right the ship financially, and was at least as responsible for the iMac as Jobs (it was being developed under his watch). Of course, Jobs took what he was given and made Apple the company it is today. but without Amelio's efforts, he may not have had an Apple to come back to. He deserves credit for this.

I still have my Perfoma 6360 that I got in College as a gift from my parents. Without the Performa line, for many such as like myself, the Macintosh would probably would have been financially off limits. Furthermore, It gave the features of Macintosh who did not need the power that a Bussiness Professional might require. Calling the Performa crap is like calling the then BMW 318i Crap!

It didn't fail, but as a manufacturer of workstation-class personal computers it wasn't a success. I guess: timing, too ahead of time, and waaay too expensive. But it was a success and important in some ways. And the OS was a big stone in building up the next Apple we know today Also, the time with NeXT made Steve Jobs a much more humble experienced CEO.

You notice the iPod nano, iPod, iPod touch, iPhone hardware and an interface application iTunes that worked on any OS. then he moved to Intel based chips. All this in 7 short years. It's amazing how much they really got done and how it changed the market of computing. one reason every other hardware company copie

The irony of everyone making fun of Gil’s “Sinking ship” analogy is that it actually does make sense. Apple WAS a sinking ship. And his job WAS to point it in the right direction.
