I kinda agree with Eric that it just seems like pandering, and it does sort of ruin immersion by making us think of our real world politics, which I prefer not to do while watching Star Wars. Whereas, if it had happened in 2008 or something, it would likely be a pretty much non-issue, because like he said, trans people have existed for a long, long time. No hate intended (or necessary) at all. So much about what is enjoyable about Star Wars is the escapism. Seems to me like they're just trying to appeal to a certain (typically younger) crowd that really, intensely cares about identity politics...which companies have done since forever. When George made the OT, he did say it was about Vietnam and whatnot, but you would only see that spin on it knowing of what he said. It was very subtle. Star Wars politics is a completely separate entity than our real world politics, and this just seems like an outright blatant mixing of the two. 💖

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Kay! I think if they added this character back in 2008 there still would have been just as much controversy as there is now. I guess part of the timing probably has to do with the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm as well. If Disney had bought Lucasfilm back in the early 2000s they may have implemented this character back in 2008. Who knows though. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way I think it’s a good move by adding this character. @@SeriouslyStarWarsThey would have implemented it no doubt, but your timing is off. ESG scores didn’t really start until 2012 right around “Occupy Wall Street”. Disney panders to this ESG score so they can open up greater access to capital… So yes, it’s pandering.
