@@John-bs6ut thanks for that info John. When I saw the demo, that was my first thought. However, if one is trying to use the camera as a security protection device, then if the suction cup is a good one, one just leaves the cam stuck on with it unless the other option just holds the camera better to the windshield. Personally, I am looking to see a dashcam part of the 360 cams being included in many new vehicles or else one that has a long life battery that is rechargeable so that no cable is required at all.

Awesome presentation, Dave. Please may I ask that if the unit isn’t hard wired into the car does it turn on an off as the car is switched on and off as the car is turned on and also if one chooses to use the 12v plug over the hard wire would it mean that the unit would have to be reset every it was used. @@geekanoids I think you misinterpreted the question. In short, yes there's every chance the mount will come unstuck from the windscreen due to the (far too) powerful magnet. I have this dashcam. I bought it last week from Halfords. I also bought the cabin view cam that attaches to the side. I got them both on offer for £143.50, which is cheaper than the cam on it's own at the original price. I have a 412gw as a rear dashcam so thought the cabin view might be an fun extra. Just a couple of things from this 1st weeks use. Firstly if you have one of the added cameras, rear view, cabin view or the one that is cable fed to the rear window you will need a U3 class SD card. The class10 card I was using in my other cam wasn't fast enough when recording both images on the 522gw. Secondly the GPS seems very slow to find my location when driving. If I wait for it to locate me before setting off it seems like a strong GPS signal. This could be caused by my car a I have a similar thing with my satnav.

I've just installed my 2nd 522GWand confess I try and avoid todays technology where I can, bewildering. However, I have had two 'incidents' in 2 years that seem similar? The recent incident was last week, just days after the installation, by Halfords, I asked that the camera be powered on 24/7. I was parked in a public car park, sitting in the car, and a young lad who later confessed to be rubbish at parking hit my car as he tried to swing into the adjacent space nose first. My issue is that the recordings on the SD card stopped at 13:54 and restarted at 14:26 give or take a minute or 2. This of course covered the period of the impact. In fact I would say that 13:54 was the moment of the impact. Now, what am I missing ? where is the missing footage of the impact? Can anyone throw any light on the above? Oh, and why does the 522GW by default protect all files?

Hello Dave, Thank you for the review. This is yet another review that really seems to be in favour of this dash cam. I'm having really bad luck with my new car, so need to get a dash cam (or the car will sadly have to go.) My biggest, and honestly, only requirement, is recording when I'm away from the car if/when some b*****d knocks my car. I don't want to rip my new car to pieces, hardwiring one of these things, therefore battery life is hugely important to me. Which leads to my question: Can you please let me know how good the battery life is on this model, with regards to it starting to record when it detects a knock (from another vehicle) when the engine is off and you are away from the car? More specifically, how long (in days?) would the battery last if you were away from the vehicle? Also, how accurate is the knock detection? Eg when someone parallel parks too close to you, and hits your car? I have a convertible, so can't have a separate camera on my rear "window," therefore do you think the rear view camera add on would be good enough for protecting the rear of my car? Again, I'm referring to recording knocks when the engine is off and I am away from the car. Or do you think the optional cabin view plug in camera would do a better job of this? Thanks again for your review, and I'd really, really appreciate your feedback re my queries. All the best!

Would need to be hard wired for away from car coverage.

The little cover that comes off at the side is where you plug the rear facing camera in. It wouldn’t fit if that was captive 👍🏻

Hi, the black plastic hand tool allows you to remove the inner plastic fittings in the car allowing you to place the connecting wire (Power cable) behind the window upright plastic covers, It stops you using a flat head screw driver as mentioned by another who made a comment about the tool. You should never just push the power cable into small gaps as you risk damaging the inner wires and replacement power cable is NOT CHEAP. You can buy a full set of these plastic (CAR TRIM REMOVER SET 5PCE AUTOMOTIVE BODYWORK TOOLS HAND TOOL) via fleabay great small cheap set of tools stopping you damaging your plastic car trim with metal screws driver.

I just picked up a 522gw from Best Buy for $209 plus tax. The nextbase hardwire kit sucks so get a third party one especially if you have micro2 fuses as it won't work with them. I picked up an aukey obd2 power cord with motion sensor for the job. I'm still waiting on the rear camera to arrive.

@@geekanoids I have to ask you how long does your unit remain powered up after the main power shuts off with parking mode enabled? I've charged this unit several times now and once the main power shuts off it doesn't take but a minute or two before the unit starts squawking about low battery and shuts off. I'm concerned that mine is defective. Thanks.

Hi Dave - will have to agree with last chap and disagree with you!😀 But only slightly ... no usb point is a deal breaker as I currently use dash cam & sat nav. Do they make an alternate cable? Nice video again. 👍

Thanks Terry. You could buy a separate USB cable (USB-A to Mini) and then plug into a dual port 12V adapter.

Hi Dave Was wondering if you could help me out with a few questions. In relation to the GPS on the camera, can this be tracked by the app - say if your car is stolen? Also when the car is parked, stationary and off. If there is motion around the car, would the camera pick this up and record it even if the camera is powered off but hard wired?? Your help would be appreciated Kind regards Robbie
@geekanoids5 жыл бұрын
It would work when parked for a limited time. Hard wiring is the best option. GPS tracking for stolen vehicles is not a supported feature.

That side cover comes all the way off so it doesn't get in the way if you mount the optional interior camera on it.

I also prefer 1080p (60fps) as I use a 128gb sd card & find you can get a lot more files out of it rather than using the 1440p mode

Is there a demo on how to actually use it? Everything you say in your video you can basically read on the box but it doesnt tell you about the reality of using the kit on a day to day basis. Also, I hvae never had Alexa and the instructions dont really tell you how to use it or what commands you need to use to activate it or save video files. I had it hardwired installed through Halfords but they couldnt offer a live demo as they didnt know how to use it. I set it up quite swiftly, played with the settings and it is kind of straight forward, however.... it doesnt tell you how to download the footage in case of an accident etc etc. It doesnt tell you about the day to day practicalities. Furthermore the second time that i took it off the windscreen i took it to my computer to download the footage and the software wont let me access the footage properly. I dont know why. The instructions in the box are next to useless. There appears to be no actual proper demo of the settings for using the camera. I thought it might be best to choose the duplicate files button as it might offer extra protection of footage but it just duplicates a low res and high res version of the files clogging up the memory. There is no point saving the low res versions as they are such poor quality. Apparently the Camera is only supposed to be used at something like 18-25Degrees Celsius otherwise it can be damaged or affect functionality..... If that is the case then the camera is pointless as it sits on your windscreen all day and gets incredibly hot by itself so the slightest bit of sunshine even on an overcast day will make it overheat to a point where it might break. I am currently not happy at all with this product in terms of instructions and support though the camera does appear to be a good build quality i tend not to use it very often as it seems like it may overheat and there is no point using it when you cant get the files off the camera!!

@Freddies House I too have problems understanding how to get the footage off the dashcam to pc or to phone. I agree with the op, we need a video that actually shows you how to use it, and not simply be given s detailed account of the features by in effect a sales rep for nextbase who way are supplying foc gear for this video I guess

Just get a genuine one of beater from a reputable nextbase seller for £10... only trouble it’s a series 1 mini usb lead so if you have the series 2 adhesive mount fitted your have too file down the edges as nextbase have been crafty with the new mini usb lead they supply as it’s thinner than the other standard mini usb lead

I have the 422gw, shame it doesn’t come with the built in polarised lens like the 522gw considering the price... I’m glad they have now included the cable plastic prodding tool instead of using a sharp flat screw driver edge to hide the cable in the interior. I’d like to have all the series 2 models with the all black front face like the 322gw & lower as looks more cleaner & less obvious in the windscreen area as the 422 & 522gw have silver. Also I’m glad the recording red led light is easier to see in daylight as on the 312/412,512gw it was impossible too see!
