Nextbase iQ Dashcam: Feature-packed & Pricey

Watching this made me think why doesn’t the rear facing camera have an interior camera too. Not that I want to see the back of my head but it could help with documenting side impacts.

Well, I am not convinced yet they would finish all the features that they already promised (like the Roadwatch AI). I heard marketing/sales people say "it could be added through SW update" so many times and only rarely it really happened.

The marketing guy interjects with too much nonsense information... wish he would just stick to what he knows and stop trying to oversell the product since he's clearly not technical. "it has an IoT chipset", "with IoT we can hop towers", calling 1080p "1K"... Couldn't gather much about the product except it will be another live service product that collects money from my wallet every month. Possibly interfering with my radar detector is very concerning as well.

Original review: This Camera is far from being ready for prime time. I have the 4K version. Live view times out. No notifications. Basic app. Cam should not sell for $700, but provided free of charge for testing purposes. Edit as of Dec 17: A lot of issues were fixed with the latest firmware update. This was a good sign for me as now I know this is a software issue rather than a hardware limitation. Verdict: I am keeping this camera and planning to buy the rear iQ.

@@jdub1139 Yes I did. It was mainly a software issue. When I bought it, it was using version 1.6. The cam is now on 2.1.14. The updates fixed all the issues. I am quite happy with my purchase. Just the motion notification makes it quite worth the price for me.

Anything over 400 needs a radar unit. Thinkware U3000 is the benchmark on a dashcam. A dashcam needs to be automotive oriented (powered with reliability).

I really like the remote live view. I don't know if other cameras have that feature, but I think it's very useful. Also, that low power mode for parking is a great battery saver. I can't wait for a hands-on review to see the image quality and how well all those features work. P.S. Are we still doing that "99" thing when it comes to pricing? 😐

don't buy it. It's garbage. I bought one and my ring car cam works a lot better than the iq nextbase junk. Ring car cam's subscription to access live view is only 6 bucks per month while the nextbase junk will cost you 9.99 or 19.99 depending on how much money you want to waste on this piece of garbage.

172mph, 135mph avg .. I'd say it's not quite there yet as far as keeping track of other vehicle speeds.

Good job Ariel! I'm glad to see Nextbase didn't use the ball socket in the camera mount with this dash camera. I had to terminate my review attempt of the 522GW because it would bounce around too much resulting in shaky video footage. The price point is extremely high for the 1CH or 2CH units. That's not even accounting for the cost of any dash camera battery pack that you may want to use to make the radar parking mode last as long as possible. It will be interesting to see how well the AI features end up working.

I need ram mount because of the expensive tint stripe at the top of my windshield. I never had any "vibration" issues with my current setup.

That's a ridiculous price point. WAY overpriced and the subscription fee seems ridiculous as well, but I feel that way about pretty much all subscription based "services". 😂

FWIW, the subscription fee also includes cellular data. The cheapest you can find data plans are around $10/mo and so if you go for Nextbase's $10/mo plan then you effectively get "free" cloud features after paying the same price for data you would elsewhere.

@@VortexRadar agreed, I am currently paying $10 a month for a separate hotspot device thru my cellular company just to use with my Q1000 and my buggy Blackvue 970 in my two cars. But even the Q1000 isnt perfect so I would gladly pay $10 a month for a built in system for cloud features that actually work when needed. To me, charging $10/month is incentive for Nextbase to keep it working via correcting bugs, better updates, etc; if not most customers will cancel the subscription and just use this as a regular dashcam. The two competitors I mentioned above sell their product promising features but do not have an extra incentive to make them work well. Thus finally I feel this puts the customer in control! Take my money :)

So this is powered from the OBD port? Is this a common method to power up dashcams for parking mode and do you think there's a risk of draining the battery? Can external battery pack be connected to the iQ?

It is common and they generally have voltage cutoffs to prevent draining the battery too much. Connecting to a dedicated battery is possible with adapters, but the effectiveness may vary between dashcams since they aren’t designed for that.

Looking forward to a in-depth evaluation of the radar protection/threat alert features. What is the delay between detection and notification, naturally the notification is dependent on both the tx and rx having cell coverage. This would be a nice feature for the consumer that parks at a Trail Head for a day hike, or other day use recreation area. External battery or hard wire, battery saver, are other areas that I would like an in-depth evaluation. Of course does the image quality compare with the BlackVue or Thinkware brands. Was leaning real hard on the DR970X Box Plus until I saw your Nextbase interview. Thanks for sharing.

I would stay away from Blackvue 970X. Been very disappointed in its parking mode/cloud features. Very spotty and buggy, even after they replaced it. I am looking hard at alternatives like this to replace it.

It would have been great to have a second wireless mic for the person being interviewed. The audio would have been much improved.

How so? We were both mic’ed up with wireless mics (Rode Wireless Pro’s). Jeff’s mic was inside his shirt and this harder to see. It is the first time I used this mic setup though. What’d you notice and how could I improve it?

Not worth it at the time. I have Verizon and connected to the next base via Bluetooth I’m in the car and I’m still only able to upload half of the videos and the other half says something went wrong. Definitely not worth the subscription when it only works half of the time.

False information the Ai features are not available. Purchased for the parking mode, and paid for subscription noticed it wasn’t getting alerts to phone. I’m the app guarding mode and Ai are blocked out says coming soon… that why I purchased this expensive ass camera. Getting my refund. False advertising

Do not buy. All next base dashcams turn off at low speeds if driving. I tried usb connection, 12V connection. Even charging it for 4 hours at home. I tried multiple cars and multiple versions. There is a design flaw in the product. Please do not buy. This never happened to any other dashcam I used.

For THAT much money I'd expect better mounting (standardized mounting options) not this proprietary crap and in this case it looks like window sticking is your only option!? How stupid! I have a very expensive tinting stripe at the top of my window that I don't want damaged by a mount like that and would RATHER have some sort of a ram mount, etc. They will NOT be getting my money because of that!

I bought the Nextbase IQ 4k dash and the rear to go with it once it came out. I’ve had the dash cam for almost two weeks now and it worked great. But when the rear cam came in and wired correctly, all the sudden I am having major issues. All while plugged in to the OBD, the camera wont turn off, says recording but when I go to look up footage on some footage is there and the rest is missing, not saving to the SD card, rear camera only connects after I RESET it. And then it only works once and stops working. I think I am going to return this until the bugs are figured out. There are a lot of issues with this right now
