I actually planted lavendar next to my front door in basically clay soil. I dug out a good circle and added compost. It has been 2 years this is 3rd. Every year it grows back awesomely with no extra care. This year i am cutting all the dead branches from last couple years. I already see new growth so I probably waited too long but so much is going on. Oh well. I will post it in a week or so when done.

Thank you for this video, it's very helpful 🙏 I living in Sydney, weather is warm, in summer can be very hot. I love lavender, bought some English and French ones planted in ground, after a while not happy there, some start to died off, so dug out put in a big container face northwest, still not thriving, I went to nursery ask one of the staffs he said maybe not enough water, so I water it twice a week now can see some improvement and few flowers. Another pot is on the balcony face west looking so miserable no flower at all, moved to shade area the same What I did wrong 😞

You may need to water it more frequently. I'm having to water mine every other day. I totally drown it when I water it. It's in a big plastic pot with good drainage. I'm in the desert of Phoenix Arizona, USA. It's very hot here. It's been around 115f (46c?)the last couple days, and so far so good. It does get full sun, too and it's always stressed that the Phoenix sun is not the same as everyone else's full sun.

I got lavender this Spring when the leader at church said it repels mosquitos. It works even though it has stopped blooming for now. I put the pots on the deck and sit outside during Zoom Bible Study or dinner. Yes, I have a mosquito net over my table umbrella but with the lavender, the mosquitos aren't around to sneak in while I have it unzipped. Maybe I'll get the lavender in the ground next year. This video taught me to remove the catch trays from under the pots so the water will drain completely out the holes.

I’m so jealous of how easy a spade goes into your soil! Heavy clay here, and the only time I can get a spade in like that is after a good soaking rain and enough days of drying out that you find that sweet spot where the soil is easily dug because it’s damp and not so wet it’s sticky. It’s a very small window of time.

Try sprankling the soil with microbes solution.. Maybe with microbial solution (like jadam's or eco enzyme, or others) and after a while it could make the soil perform better...

First time ever trying lavander, keeping fingers crossed. Munstead started from seed middle with some ok results, plants are 4/5" tall. Also did a cold stratification for about 30 days in the refrigerator with two different seed source with munstead...pretty Good results. Some in pots , and a few small plants in the ground , see what happens. Fragrance is spectacular even from the smallest plantings. Crappy soil neutral to slightly alkaline information came right from a Lavander grower. Extreme patients from seed.

I tried last year to start lavender seeds and nothing happened. I tried again this year and had success! I sort of did a little experiment. I did the cold stratification method on half of them and then just planted the other half into a Styrofoam cup, and started indoors with both. I also over seeded both, and both were successful. In fact, the Styrofoam cup with the seeds that I did not cold stratify had more success. I already transplanted them into bigger pots outdoors. I’d say they’re probably about 3 inches tall and look really good. They also smell amazing.

Thanks for the great content Brian! I actually had some lavender I bought, but waited until I could get to this video before planting them. Unfortunately I may have waited too long. The leaves have really yellowed, which made me think I may have been watering them too much, but when I pulled them out of their temporary containers today, the soil in the root ball was dry. I just put them in the ground slightly raised like you said, since the area I planted them in does tend to have water pool up under heavy rains. Hopefully they take to the new spot and start thriving again. Otherwise I may need to get some new ones and put the in the ground immediately.

I mix in a lot of chicken grit with things that are in pots and need good drainage. I wash it first although I'm not really sure that's needed. It seems to really work well and is pretty inexpensive. Another thing I do when I pot instead of putting a broken something in the bottom, I use drywall tape. It holds everything in and never gets clogged up. And, again, it's inexpensive!

Hi Brian, how does the lavender topiary hold up in wind? I trained a rosemary as a very tall standard in a traditional lollipop that I keep inside or in the greenhouse, as I think the wind would break it. Plus I’m zone 3 anyway. I’ve been wanting to try a lavender but want to keep it outside in the summer. Your lavender standards look really sturdy. I’m thinking if I trained the lavender outside (and not so tall), it will be strong.

@Next Level Gardening Hi Brian, I have learned and of course, that when moving an established plant from one planting site to another, it is very important to prune it immediately to reduce the shock of planting and if the plant is planted in a pot, I place it in the shade for a day. I live in a very hot and dry place in the summer, it only rains in the winter for about four months plus or minus. Mediterranean climate . I would love to know what the success % is in transferring the plants in your garden, according to your experience.

Hey Brian, I had a quick question about your fertilizer routine I was hoping you might have a chance to answer! 😊 It is a bit unrelated to this video but I thought commenting on your newest video would be best! I bought neptunes harvest for my tomato seedlings and was going to follow your instructions to use it at half strength, however, i only have about 10 tomato plants and dont need 4.5 liters of fertilizer, so i did some math and reduced the ratio down to 1ml of fertilizer per 600ml of water, and found out i can use my kitchen scale to weigh out the 1ml as 1g. I was just wondering if this sounds right to you? 1g of neptunes harvest fish and seaweed per 600ml of water?

It sounds right but I'm far from a math whiz! The great thing about NH is it is very forgiving. You won't hurt your seedings if you're off one way or the other
