Funny. It‘s almost the other way round for me. When I was 14-16 I thought this was great cynism and dry humour and I still like it because it is a very 90s attitude to me but the older I get the more I figure that it also seems antisocial and disordered. Daria: "Whether or not I deserve anything is irrelevant, assuming you run your scholarship program the same way you run your company. Since the token women and minorities you hire rarely move into upper management, and since I won't give the answers you want to hear, in hopes of somehow bucking the odds, I guess you can pass on me, as if I were one of your female employees up for promotion."

Damien Poe Rocks Cynicism isn't inherently negative, It views the world in light of skepticism. Daria wasn't necessarily a "downer". She just saw the world in a way that coincided more clearly with a lot of the critical thinkers and artists. Unbridled optimism has a hand in stupidity which is the epitome of Brittany the other antagonist besides her sister. Daria constantly made a social commentary on the inherent injustice of social inequality mostly made upon looks, superficiality, and sports. She was counter culture and more of a critical thinker which was rare of the 90's era. You didn't have as much internet as you did back then, so it was refreshing to see someone remove the rose tint goggles and know you weren't alone in skeptic thoughts about high school valley girl or like... whatever kay? *twirls hair*

Eze Wong oh don't get me wrong, i do love snark and sarcasm, cynicism, etc. Duckman, George Carlin, among others... even as a kid i liked those but that's because they not only did that, but they also made it fun and enjoyable to watch, i mean it WAS a comedy after all, it was designed to entertain, but they did still have their corners of truth and their obvious mind blowing messages. but House and Daria were just kill joys overall you see because they don't try to even look exaggeratedly pissed or miserable or even make fun of something meaningful, no, they're both just constantly miserable at everything, and they complain and complain and complain. that's nothing more than the annoying kid at your school who's angry at life, consumed by nihilism and rains on everyone's parade that's not enjoyable people put out to get away from people like that and those 2 don't give a lighter side to a serious issue, they just bring it down to nothing but some cruel reminder, AND makes it boring to boot, pure cynicism is not enjoyable, it's like having a pizza crust without the pizza cynicism with a dash of entertainment however? there we go, it can even be insightful to have true snark, you have to make fun of something and if "fun's" not included, then snark is nonexistent when you watch a cartoon do you want to feel like you're in school? like you're being taken for a cruel truth ride that tells you everything's fake and unavoidable? no you're watching a cartoon a cartoon is a cartoon above all else if it's meant to be serious, but it's meant to be serious, if it's meant to be fun? then you require cartoon aspects to make it so you can make a very serious mind blowing show disguised as a cartoon but making a cartoon disguised as a show that tries to be cynical? it devalues itself i mean take a good look at Duckman Duckman is everything Daria is, done right give it a shot

Tbh being like that can even be tiring. Knowing the reality of your life and outwardly saying it can help you feel better, but it does get you depressed. I tried being a Daria in my life, I tired being all cynical and monotone, but that was just a defense mechanism deep down I had created to help with my growing dread at the fact that my life was not going the way I wanted it to. Soon enough I started judging the smallest things to the point where I questioned myself for doing alot of things I would judge others for. Then I guess I became quite relaxed in this judgement and even tried to just experience the present moment. Because to me, it seems like, Daria also does that. When confronted with reality, alot of us become cynical to look cool or whatnot. But the truth is that we are just as naive as the ones we judge, especially as teens.

In other words, "Daria" was that rarity of rarities, a spin-off of a spin-off.

Believe it or not, Daria's cynicism was challenged throughout the show by the other characters who the show actually put care into exploring and showing that they also had depth. I did not fully understand just how great this show was as a teen because upon first watch, you are just entertained by Daria's one-liners and sharp observations, but if you watch it again you realize just how much all insight and growth all of the main characters had. I was really impressed with the way the writers evolved Daria, Helen, Jake, and especially Quinn when I watched the entire series again.
@kevinlevick82052 жыл бұрын

MTV was always what's known as a generational channel. Each decade they would reflect off of in order to appeal to the generation at the time. In the 80s it was all about the music, so they became the Hit Music Video Channel, in the 90s it was all about fans of MTV, so they made cartoons dedicated to that. This show, Beavis and Butthead, The Head all had elements of the original MTV generation. 2000s was all about reality shows and now 2010s its the SJW capital of the world.

I hate that some people push teens to grow up way too fast. Telling them to behave and so on is one thing but if you're 15 and they already tell them to start planning on what you want to do with your life is another. Let them have fun for a while.
@CountessChuchoteur8 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's nice to have an idea of what you want to do, but teens shouldn't feel pressured to have the next fifty or so years intricately planned out by the time they graduate high school. People don't always know what they want to do with their lives when they're that young. Sometimes, they don't find their calling until they're in their 20s, 30s, 40s, even 50s, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's never too late to figure out what you want to be.
@GhostInTheShell298 жыл бұрын
I really don't get the concept behind becoming what you want to be.. Wouldn't it make more sense to tell kids to figure out what they are good at, and do that for a living. Also probably should do some career training in highschool.. be a damn good idea. What you want, and what you'll realistically get are entirely two different things, and if your not in a career your good at odds are your not going to go far with it.
@SpikeLanta8 жыл бұрын
you know what's even more fucked up? most of the students I went to high school with only joined clubs like The Beta Club or other college type clubs because of a popularity contest. They could care less what it was about. Plus there were always fights on who got to be president or treasurer or whatever. What's even more fucked up is in order to join the beta club, you have to be very smart, such as always making the honor roll or something. And the people that ran it were idiots only doing it to get noticed, and could care less about how it could help them later in life.

They should have put this show on adult swim, especially during my highschool years (2006-2010). All we had at the time were king of the hill reruns. While KotH was a great show, it wasn't meant for growing teenagers, giving us (somewhat) unrealistic views and expectations about adulthood. Daria WAS a growing teenager, and had wittier, better, more justifiable use of cynicism, whose quotes could have changed my world for the better. But sadly, this show belongs to viacom, so that could never happen. And in a bizzarre way, this show gets...too real..for me to watch as i get older. "I don't have low self esteem, it's a mistake. I have low esteem for everyone else. " I put that on a shirt once for my niece and when she wore it to school suddenly all the kids wanted one.

I love Daria she is so badass. Fashion club is so overrated.

Fashion Club is pretense. A means to an ends where one seldom looks bad, according to group standards. Sandy is a classic character although I kind of don't like her.

I think the fashion club was meant to satirize popular teen culture that was glorified in movies like "Clueless"

"Badass" is a bit of a stretch because she's afraid of needles(Pierce Me).

I wish she'd helped me when I was in high school. My grades sucked. :(

It was probably just the ghost of that girl who accidentally got burned alive by her family whilst trying to fill out her college application in the quiet bomb shelter changing all of your correct answers into incorrect answers. Don't blame yourself

She wasn't burned alive. She was trapped inside the family's bomb shelter when cement was poured over top of it.

CountessChuchoteur Aw crap. The perfect set-up and I flubbed it by (most likely) melding another story into it. Well, at least the reference wasn't lost

I watch reruns on Pluto TV on Sunday mornings (hence why I'm here and typing this on a Sunday morning) and the show still holds up in 2023. I was only 8 when it started so I can truly appreciate it now.

"Daria" was an amazing show! It still holds up in spite of its nostalgia factor. I'm so happy I own the whole series on DVD.

No. 2 should be no.1, what she said was just too real. Hits me hard.
