Once, in 1972, I almost ran out of gas. I made it to a gas station but all I had was 45c in change. That bought me more than a gallon, and I got home with no problem. I like how on 26, they don't even address that Red is being ABSURDLY patient with Eric, even though he keeps screwing up here. Red is likely fully aware he is high as a kite, but KNOWS the event is important, so is being 'soft' about it. Red is the 'when it matters' type of dad. Which is a lot better than most the other types.

For too long, man was said to only have 2 types of friends: the Good Friend, and the Best Friend. If you lose control and end up in jail, the Good Friend is there to bail you out. The Good Friend is often then mocked in comparison to the Best Friend, because the Best Friend got put in jail right along with you as well. Outside their relations with you, both share one common trait: they are enablers. Yesmen that sit back knowing someone they say is their friend, wander into harm. Red is a True Friend. A True Friend knows you are about to do something stupid, and will remind you of the consequences, hold you back, bring consequences when others let you slide, or all of the above. Here's to you Red.

I grew up in the 70's (born 1962) and my Dad was a lot like Red. One day I came home and one of my sister's friends was in the front yard. He had a panicked look on his face. "Steve! Your Dad found your stash! He was furious!" There on the front porch was an assortment of rolling papers, pipes, weed etc. My Dad came out the front door holding a bong and a hammer. My father, a WWII US Army Veteran who finished active duty as a Lt. Colonel and went on to put over 40 years in the Army Reserve, used to have a saying that I first started hearing about the time I was 10 or 11 years old. If he was concerned I would mess something up that was very important to him, he would say: "You do that and you and me both will have to go to the hospital." For years I was unclear as to what exactly he meant about both of us having to go to the hospital. Sometime around my 14th birthday, I finally got up enough nerve to ask him, "You know, Dad, I can understand why I might have to go the hospital , but why would you have to go?" He turned and looked me square in the eyes and said: "In order to get my foot out of your ass!" Yeah, I have a pretty clear understanding of Red's character... and why he is so lovable...
