LG Nexus 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3? Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!
We know - we know. It seemed absurd to us, too. Pitting the new $350 "Google phone" up against Samsung's $700+ tablet replacement? You'd have to search high and low to find a bigger mismatch. It's like a drag race between a Lamborghini and an armored assault vehicle. Sure, it's entertaining ... but really, what's the point?
Well, there is a point - and it has to do with buzz. As disparate as they are, these phones share roughly the same level of popularity, from where we're sitting. The Nexus 5 is the talk of the town at the moment - and despite its launch having come and gone months ago, the Galaxy Note 3 is still one of the most sought-after devices for power users. That's why "Nexus 5 vs Note 3" is one of the most-searched-for phrases on KZbin right now: the hardcore smartphone geeks are split on whether to favor economy or excess, and they've got no compass to help them decide.
We're not saying this video is a panacea for their woes we don't even cover benchmark scores, for several reasons but maybe it'll help set pros against cons and paint a picture that clears things up a little. Maybe it'll help some folks decide between stock Android and the S Pen. Maybe it'll help others figure out whether they really need a phablet. Or maybe it'll just serve as an excuse to see two of the world's best smartphones on the same screen for a few minutes.

I could afford a phone like the Note 3, but honestly why would I spend $400 more for a larger screen? Most people have no use for the added features, they just want to talk, text, browse the web, and play a few games. At $350 its a no brainer. I can take that extra $400 and get a laptop or a nice tablet to compliment my Nexus. Thats just my view, I'm sure there are some who would love the Note 3's added features, just honestly not that many.

John Shows I can honestly agree with that you have said. Since I sold all my Apple products (iPad, iPhone, iPod). I wanted something "all in one." Tablet, phone, multitasking for my business, and aviation arrangements. I did not mean to come off as condescending with "if you can afford." I totally understand that some people would rather take a different route and purchase other things. I'm happy how I went about getting the Note, but I could definitely feel your opinion on the Nexus 5 and buying some other gadgets. :) I can also say that I am one of those individuals who like having all that junk packed into one device. I'm sure, someday, I will grow tired of TouchWiz and stuff. Just enjoying the new OS and added features for tinkering openly.

Not really. The note 3 is $400 dollars more and the samsung UI just can't compare to stock android. The Nexus 5 is a wayyyyyyyy better bank for buck, While the note 3 is just not better enough to be $400 more.

Well yes and no, the note 3 has touch wiz.....which comes with a large amount of redundant software thats nice to have but you'll rarely ever need it, and if you do use it, its not because you need it, its because you just have it there. I was a proud owner of the GS2, Note 2, GS3....and then i stopped.....the software was just too much for me, its useless for most every day users, and as i said, when people tell me they use the features every day its not because they actually need it, they sort of trick themselves into thinking they need it. Stock android gives you 10x more options than iPhone, BUT nothing you dont need like samsung, the better phone is the Nexus 5

Omar Morales Luna I can't really say anything about the Nexus 5 but i do own a Note 3 and it is a workhorse, every feature including the s Pen gets used quite a lot....do you guys own a Note 3 for any amount of time? if not, some of your opinions on how Note 3 users, use their apps are not qualified opinions and more like assumptions.......

I bought the nexus 5. I don't have much to say about it that I like. I'm not a fan of the new camera update although I think its better than it was. I don't like that my toggles are dropped down with two fingers instead of one. Don't like that I can't swipe right or left on a contacts name to call and text. Many little features that Samsung has that this phone lacks. Great phone for the price takes some getting used to, but not one of the best phones out there

Stop calling the nexus 5 a slab. Its so annoying and I have been hearing this since the first reviews have sprouted. The nexus 5 is a gorgeous, sleek and sexy phone, especially when compared to the note 3's "premium leather" which looks nearly as bad as the cheap plastic samsung is known for.

Nexus 5 is a smartphone whereas note 3 is a phablet, they should not be even compared in the first place, two different devices with different software experiences. It all comes down to personal preference, since both specs are amazing.

2300 mah for 5" is the same as 3000 mah for a 5.7" screen? LOL. 700mah is just too much for 0.7 inches. The battery life is significantly better on the Note 3. Plus its removable. I dont understand why you dont get that!

It's not just about the bigger screen. Some TouchWiz releases for Note 3 have also caused battery draining. And also, in the Note 3, unless specifically switched off, the screen constantly tries to detect if the S Pen is close to the screen, at least, that's what I read. All these contribute significantly. And what's your point about removable batteries? Are you telling me that the user should carry a spare, fully charged battery along all the time? Isn't it easier to just use a power brick?

This comparison was a pleasure to watch, if only because I know both phones...but with respect, there really is no comparison. The Note 3 blows any other phone away. Yes, it's large (but like a diamond, it shrinks after wearing it for a little while) and expensive...but it thrills me every time I pull it out. If one of the best things you can say about the Nexus 5 is that it's cheap or that it's pure Android. ...I'll spend a lot more money to love my cool feature rich Note 3.

Nexus is more like an iPhone where you want a simple easy to use and consistent device with not much of anything else. The note 3 is more like a powerhouse for users who want the best of the best. Top performance, specs, size, many more features, much more than just a "phone"

Edward Martinez Well you can always flash your own custom roms. :) But for samsung phones, if you flash custom roms, the touchwiz features would all go to waste. You're better off buying a nexus device :)

Sorry but there is no better mobile device than the note 3 if you are willing to carry a phone this big with you all the time. If you can do that you customer for life and thats it really. Android OS on the other hand, on its ure form, is such a nice thing, maybe the nicest OS around at the moment.

im no fanboy but i think the note 3 is better. the only thing nexus is good for is being smooth thats it. when it comes to features, its like the iphone of the android. so simple. the note is pretty much everything in your phone all together. i'd take the nokia over the nexus. and the note really isn't too bg. a phone is too big if you cant hold it with one hand. and thats big. it easily fits in my pocket..

Are you serious. You are comparing a $400 phone with a $700 phone. I have a Nexus 5 and I love the pure Android 4.4.2, I hate battery life, it is very simple. But Note 3 is if you have "you life" on that smartphone. Of course that Note 3 is way much better because it gives you much more options than Nexus 5, But comparing to price I think you should not compare these phones. Plus you'd take Nokia? Why Nokia? Windows Phone? What does it offer you? Nothing. If you but a smartphone the first thing people see is applications and battery life, and I thing Windows Phone need a few more years to compare with Android. Nokia is not that company it used to be.

why are you bringing up price? isn't this video a comparison? if you're gonna ask that question it should be to the uploader. why am i bringing up nokia? well obviously nokia is a better all around phone in terms of what it can do. i personally like its 42 mega pixel camera. when someone liika at a phone they do not look at its apps. because you can obviously download them from the app store if you're running android. people who buy phones look for what the phone is capable of doing. And no the note is not someone's life. it sure as hell isn't my life. a person who would buy a note 3 would be someone who has a busy lifestyle and does not want to hold a notepad, their laptop, and an ipod and take that to work every day. all it is is just an alternative to compensating the space. in my opinion, the note is well worth 700 dollars just because its multi tasking feature is far more advanced than any other phone on the market, its photo editing is pretty stellar, and video streaming is no problem because you got that big screen! if you dont have 700 bucks to buy a no-contract phone then obviously the note is not for you and you probably shouldn't even consider buying one.

I just found it both hilarious and ironic how people are now telling others how Android "should" act or look, when there was a time people praised the OS for it's flexibility and customization. It's openness was a huge selling point to OEMs, carriers, and users. Now you guys are turning into a bunch "walled garden" users like those others out there (ok well not quite lol). Simply put I've enjoyed my Nexus devices, and I'd recommend it to anyone, but there are just more devices out there that offers more - and that's ok. Knowledgeable users aren't forgetting that these devices are still running Android.

I have a question for everyone here that knows these two phones well as well as the s4 & the htc one. I currently have the 5s however I've grown quite bored of apple. I'm looking to get a better phone and bigger display with better battery life, better camera and more features to mess around with. I really like the features the note 3 has but idk if I'm going to be comfortable using it considering how big it is since it's technically a tablet. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want a boring phone I want something new and fun. Should I get the note 3, nexus 5, s4 or the htc one?

Hey Joseph, I know exactly how you feel man. I switched from an iphone to the note 3 and I am just astonished by the improvements, features, accessability and overall software and customization. Note 3 hands down is THE BEST phone on the market and the stylus makes it even more fun for games like fruit ninja where the stylus just glides. I really hope you go for the Note 3. God I want a nexus 5 so bad. I have the galaxy gear and note 3 and am tired of TouchWiz. I really want things as minimal as possible but can't get that with the note 3. Anyone wanna trade? Lol. I don't use the s pen or any note 3 features except multi window. However if I ended up getting the n5 and not the note 3 I can imagine myself wanting a bigger screen and battery and think wow the s pen looks cool.

I used to have the G2 but I dropped it and shattered the screen. I now have the nexus 5. I pick the nexus over the note 3 because of updates to the newest version of android. I am a tech enthusiast and like having the latest software on my phone. Again, the Note 3 is a really nice device. To each his own, I guess.

Awesome review. You really highlighted the pros and cons of the the two devices. I was thinking off getting the note 3 but for the price off contract it is way too high for me. I did get the nexus 5 and with the extra money I'm thinking of getting a nexus 7 and a Google chrome book. I'm happy with my n5 but the urge of getting a gn3 is still there. Wow.... HEAVY bias in the comparison. - Camera shots aren't even SLIGHTLY close for the comparison to be taken seriously. At least TRY to have the subjects in similar spots and angles so the comparison makes sense. - Constant backhanded comments about cherry-picked problems with the Note 3. - Pretending that price is a deciding factor when talking about phones trying to accomplish two VERY different things with VERY different audiences and then penalizing the Note's price. Go look at the price at which most people would be getting the note 3 (T-Mobile store), THEN talk about price. - The ending, when telling users "Sure, Go with the Note 3, but remember to not be jealous about all the BETTER people who bought a Nexus 5". Or to quote verbatim, "Just be sure to save your pennies beforehand, and don't begrudge your nexus carrying friends, their excellent value." Wow. That last line really sealed the deal on how horribly biased this video was.

About the price point. Most people won't get it for T-mobile price, because not all people buying this phone lives in America. Just remember that. Though It's not like it doesn't exist carrier offers elsewhere.

-the camera shots in the photo carasel were of the same subject and pretty close to me. -stating the note 3 has more ram to deal with the extra resource demand of TW isnt backhanded but true. -price IS a factor. Not every one uses subsidized phones bud. Some people like their straightalk..their metropcs..their tmobile. And not have contracts if they can help it. While i love the Note 3..paying 350 vs 600 ..price matters. Not all of us are rich. -im a note fan..had the note 1 and 2 and getting the 3rd. Doesnt change the fact the N5 IS definetly more bang for the buck. Im still getting the note3. But that fact cant be argued.

Nexus 5 is half the price of the Note 3 and it competes against it very well. Touchwiz looks like it was designed by blind people and it is horribly bloated. I would sacrifice battery,features and the leather back for pure stock Android

1. Screen size is preference 2. The battery really isn't bad and you don't need removable battery when you have a external charger 3. Worse storage? Only 32gb is available in UK and that's formatted to 25gb unlikre Nexus what it is 26. 4. The software features of touchwiz are a joke. They are gimmicks. The S Pen is nice but I NEVER used it on Note 2. Touchwiz looks like it was made by blind people who love Gingerbread icons

1- So we agree that they are not competitors in this area. 2- Battery life is much worse compared to note 3 and it is the most references weakness of the nexus 5 in most reviews on the web. Also, you don't have access to a charger on the move and everywhere. Another battery gives you 100% in 2 seconds, a charger in 2 hours -- not the same thing. External battery offers you the option of using 3rd party batteries reaching 4000-6000 mah or more if need be. Again not the same thing to compare with an external charger. 3- Much worse storage since it does not have external sd card. Period. 4- Many of them are gimmicks. Some of them are pretty useful such as multiwindow + pen window + s-pen + camera features + s-finder to name a few. You have the choice of disabling or not using the features you don't want. What extra software features does the nexus 5 bring to the table? Nothing... basically nothing more than a drawer of apps just like IOS, but with widgets. 5- Touchwiz is preference. You always have 100s of free launchers and themes on the Play Store if you don't like the icons.

They are both awesome phones, but I prefer the Galaxy Note 3. I love Samsung products. My favorite type of screen for a cell phone is the Super AMOLED Display. I guess what it boils down to is whether you like a UI (also known as a skin) for your phone, or not.

Watching this in 2019 on my Note 10+ in Dex mode @ work (it's a slow day) and getting nostalgic :P When Nexus 5 and Note 3 was new I went for the LG G2 instead of the Nexus 5 (made by LG). Same phone in a different design and had a bigger battery ;P I actually miss the G2.. It was the best battery life I have ever had on a phone

nexus is just vert nice for common use.. I have to be honest that im nto completely thrilled with the nexus 5, but lets be honest, who really needs a smartphone with the best of the best; nexus 5 is more than average.. we get so in to the smartphone craze that we really forget what the standards are. and low battery life. just why the fuck would you want to watch plenty videos on an 5 inch device, its just pathetic.. and game for 4 hours long.. (LAAME --> get a life) It's a great powerfull device and it does not really cost much (actually it does, but compared to other smarthphones of kind of the same caliber). Spending 700 euros on a device is just ridicoulous.. How many people even need a smartphone... In the end what does it matter. It qre Google, Lg, Samsung etc who get all the profit of discussions like these Ps: totally ignored the note 3, sorry for that and I did not pay attention to grammar errors cuz i dont care...

If anything, you'd want to compare a stock 4.3 version of the Note 3 to the Nexus 5 as well. If you think that TW sucks all that much, Michael said this as well: use a launcher. Or a custom ROM. XDA is a thing, you know...

It's so refreshing to see somebody who can give an honest review of both phones and not simply badmouth the Nexus 5 because it's a fraction of the price. I bought a Nexus 5 on launch day, and a Note 3 from a friend a few weeks back. I ended up selling the Note 3 and buying a new Nexus 5; giving the old one to my partner. The Note 3 does have its ups, but the bloat and Samsung's attempts to deter people from rooting/flashing proved too much for me. The Nexus 5 is also a much better fit for my hand, and I'm 6'2" with very big hands.

don't even see why there's a debate.. Note 3 is a diff class simply because of the screen and processing power... i paid a premium for the screen, its so much better to watch movies and surf with. I rooted my phone to have a clean stock android experience exactly like the nexus so what now? You get what you pay for and as much as the nexus is value for your money, its not even up there with the Note 3

I like the idea of the nexus 5, but the lack of storage & Removable battery makes the price of the nexus worth it. for the note3 having a removable battery as well as expanded storage & the multiple features makes the price of the note3 worth it to me, both are great Phones I just prefer the note3

Its funny how nobody ever mentions the fact that you can indeed install 100%, "Pure" stock Android on the Note 3, say with CyanogenMod, and you will not have to worry about TouchWiz and its side-effects. Sure you will lose out on all its many features but you will have the full speed awesomeness of the Nexus 5.......just keep that in mind people :)

Can't say that I've needed more than the 32 GB in my phone now since I stream most content but it is nice to have a spare battery. I would probably buy one of the charging packs that people use cause I know I will not be buying a samsung phone again after the Charge and Gnex!

I bought a 64g memory card. I use it in my GS3. I love the fact when I upgrade I can just pop that out and install it with out having to pay for extra GB on a new phone. Only have to buy it once. Also with how often batteries lose their change I will not buy a new phone with out removable batteries. Just my opinion

Thomas Clarke actually, i was being generous. it's even higher than 90%. comfortable for me is being able to use a phone in one hand with a single finger without having to ever shift the phone in my hand. to be able to be "accustomed to" is very different than empirical comfortability. i'm 6', so i have larger than average hands, even if you're only including men.

So undecided between the two, I currently have a note 1, but hate touchwiz, only thing I like about it is the multiwindow feature. I always end up flashing a AOSP rom (and lose the TW features I dont really use anyway) and get extremely itchy when a new version of android comes around and I dont have it yet... Nexus has that sleek look, OIS and 5" LCD screen, which I like best... Plus awesome price.. But the note 3 has DAT battery life x.x

Battery is a sacrifice for stock android, I'm not a big photographer, rarely take photos, the camera is good enough for my needs, I value android versions and Roms over an s-pen and features I don't use, and I'm kind of tired of having a humongous screen.. Also, the hole in my pocket is much smaller! xD

Ruben Soares I would not suggest it. G2 has gone very Samsung like design wise and Touchwiz Ui wise. Just less featured. It is a nice device for sure, but not if anything touchwiz like bothers you. One of the biggest things that always has me sold are those Amoled screens. There is also GPE HTC One and S4 too. But they do not have S800 chip. Any are great choices and probably would all make you happy. Np. Enjoy you choice.
