This is a great series! So much cool discussion. Really enjoyed that you guys actually ask each other what the Soul is in Demon’s Souls. This game in particular as well as Dark Souls 2 and to some extent Bloodborne illustrate the nature of FromSoft souls. I think the Nuclear reactor is a fair comparison, but you can also see the Soul as the seat of consciousness that inhabits a living thing, AND how the world, inhabitants and events in history surrounding this being are effected. The soul is the combination of a life, how this life perceives itself and how others perceive it. It is also the reality it shapes around itself by interacting with its environment. Astrea is a Saint and a Demon. Her Demon Soul is the Pureblood Soul denoting her own noble blood, her nature as an ascended Demon because it is a DEMON soul after all, as well as letting us know of her pure intentions to help the weak. Still she resides in the Valley of defilement and the place seems no better for her intentions. Even the aborted fetuses rise from the filth to kill and maim thanks to her. She is pure, yet corrupt. Saint, yet Demon. Her followers are twisted and suffering, yet hopeful and devout. Her domain is tranquil in its solitude yet oppressively vile and violent when entered by an outsider. These truths are all her Soul in a way. For a simpler example of what I’m saying you can look at what the Pureblood Soul can be made into. Pureblood Demon's Soul Usage The Pureblood Demon's Soul can be used to ascend a Broken Sword into the Blueblood Sword. It can also be used to purchase the spell Death Cloud from Sage Freke, the spell Relief from Yuria the Witch, or the miracle Resurrection from Saint Urbain. Now think of how each person you bring the Soul to would view Astrea through their own personal judgement. A humble, broken sword can be forged into a Noble weapon: Astrea’s view on the Valley of Defilement and the denizens therein. The refuse being forged into morally upright protectors of their homes. A poisonous spell can weaken and take power from one’s enemies: Freke’s point of view on rebelling against organized religion and that religious figures are themselves poisonous. Also that the soul is a means to gain and use power. A spell can be crafted that relieves the suffering of others and revitalizes their life force: Yuria’s sympathetic view toward Astrea being a fellow woman of power who has been labeled corrupt and evil for her use of it, but she knows personally the cost of that power and suspects the Maiden does as well. The miracle returns a phantom near the caster back to their corporeal flesh, without consent of the disembodied: Freke’s point of view that Astrea’s “true” nature is that of the Church’s “Saint.” So his COUNTERSIGN (his denial of her whole truth/soul) is about returning a being some might view as higher back to their corporeal, “NATURAL” form. The miracle sets things BACK to THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE via the view of Saint Urbain and the Church. In short, the soul is consciousness, power, memory, sanity, personality, reputation, potential and also more than the sum of its parts. I hope this all made sense. Keep up the good work you guys.

Someone in the Souls Modding server recently datamined first person arms in Demon's Souls' files, so going third person may have been Miyazaki's call actually an the game was gonna be a fairly standard King's Field game originally

Regarding the point JSF was making and how Demon Souls the soul gives you power but can also turn you into a demon and in blood-borne the blood is what turns you into a beast, it's an interesting note in the Dark Souls games as well in that in the first two soles is the driving force of power and by the time of Dark Souls 3 there begins to be more of a shift into consuming and imbibing the blood of the Dark Soul

I think the questions wrt the nature of what makes a deity in this game are really interesting because, as was sort of mentioned, Armored Core For Answer is entirely about how godhood is attainable through sheer incontestable violence

Great discussion all. Richie quickly mentions and moves past something I believe to be crucial for understanding all of the games at ~49m, yall should talk about that more if you haven't already. That aside, I would like to propose that the Old One is essentially the Terrestrial counterpart to the Cosmic / Oceanic Great Ones of Bloodborne. While humanity is making the kind of technological 'progress' in the absence of the Old One and the Soul Arts, it could be the case that its waning influence and possible eventual absence - perhaps slumber - was felt/heard throughout the cosmos and led to the other Great Ones competing over the 'spoils' of a 'vulnerable' and newly 'godless' humanity/earth. It's also possible that this is a recurring event or cyclical geo-cosmological process that potentially corresponds with the awakening and banishing/sedating/subduing/whatever of the Old one, such that the past periods of Old One Sleep line up with past periods of heightened cosmic influence/power i.e. blood moons etc.

During periods of Old One ascendancy, patronage and worship of the extraterrestrial Great Ones would be literally and metaphorically driven underground (respectively exemplified in Pthumeru and Cainhurst) mirroring the way history and various civilizations have been buried or otherwise sequestered in either the earth itself or various Nightmares.

Those two accounts of God don't conflict. God clearly exists in this world. And the humans have misunderstood. They don't comprehend God clearly imo and just think their soul powers are God when it was always the old one.

Random but going with the demon souls 2 speculation. Do we think the moon presence could have originally been the maiden in black, we thinj the beach arena was the bottom of the chalice, perhaps that was a connection at one point. Just spewing thoughts haha
