An often overlooked part is the transmission mount. Most people are not even aware of it, and as these cars get up in age, the need to change them gets more and more obvious. Check out this video now.
Here is some parts to get you going
Jack - amzn.to/32e7CoK
Jack Stands - amzn.to/34qAFbp
Transmission Mount - amzn.to/3iWhrin

When I shift from park to reverse the motor jumps ,could this be the problem
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 4 жыл бұрын
It could, and it could be a variety of things. Could be a motor mount, either the front ones or the ones under the engine, could be the front mount frame (it is between the engine and the mount). Mine actually broke and it was jerky. Could be a transmission issue, and may need something simple like a flush, or could be something major. My guess is one of the top 'dog bone' mounts or the frame I mentioned above, but I could not really know for sure. Start from there and do some searching. Maybe have someone switch from park to reverse while you are looking at the engine and see if you can identify the issue. Make sure it's someone you can trust though..safety first lol

@oneeyedrone4293
@oneeyedrone4293 2 жыл бұрын
3800 is a unique lovely motor, they are just bulletproof and being supercharged makes them even more fun. My L67 is pushing over 250k km on all original motor and shes solid. Other GM motors not so much, the 3400 for example was such a junker. Even though they never have issues, a thermostat swap on a 3800 motor is 5 minutes with a 10mm socket, on a 3400? remove exhausts, fluid all over the place, its a disaster. I have a 2001 olds silhouette with the 3400 original motor, now its upgeaded to a 3800 L67 with the matching HD trans (They are the same mechanically) but it still seems to run nicer due to the 1:1.1 ratio on the HD trans diff. Somehow despite having a larger motor, supercharger bolt on top, its still easier to work on the 3800 in the van than the 3400 ever was. Only pain is the power steering reservoir which is actually easier to get to via the passenger side wheel opening. This is an issue for the grand prix as well but there are some options to move the tank to the top of the motor.

@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 2 жыл бұрын
You do need to lift it a bit more than you would this mount. You have to clear the mount entirely (which is about the same height at this mount) and get the engine a bit higher, as it is harder to get to ( it is a bit more inboard). I don't know the exact measurement, but 4-5 inches does sound about right.

Seriously though a good video I didn't know you had to unbolt the dog bones, I want to do as least as possible to this car. It's just transportation I'm not really any kind of enthusiast or anything. I'm putting control arms on it right now so I thought I'd do the motor mount. But the thing is it looks like the motors pointing down toward the passenger side how do I check that transmission mount? I don't want to just change every month I want to do as little as possible this thing. Would the motor looking like it's leaning toward the passenger side being indication of the front motor mount? Also I have what feels like wheel balance but it tends to go away when you release the acceleration. Could a bad motor mount along with bad lower control arm bushings cause that issue of feeling like wheel balance but going away when I release the accelerator? I have read that could be the case.
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, a lot of questions and info here. I hope I get all of it. Thanks on the video (even with the one bolt comment LOL). Hey, nothing wrong with wanting to work on your everyday car. Most people here are just trying to make sure their ride works, like yourself. If a motor mount is bad, the engine would rock/move when revving, and when you drive and let off the accelerator, it will feel like the engine is lurching forward (like trying to throw itself forward). If really bad, it will lean for sure, and you will feel vibration from the engine when off the accelerator...the opposite of your issue. But the combination of control arm and mount...that is possible. Both act against each other, so letting off the accelerator could 'hide' the issue. Unfortunately, the passenger side mount is the hardest to do, as it sits a bit far inboard of the engine (but done similarly to this mount).

I just got a 2007 Grand Prix and when I press the gas hard I hear and feel a couple pops, and when I brake hard I feel the same thing. It’s only on the passenger side front that I feel it. Except it’s more under the hood than by the wheel. Could it be a trans mount?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a mount. It can be a few things, but the mount is very common thing to check in these scenarios. Start by first checking the 'dog bone' engine mounts on the front of the car. Have someone rev the car while in neutral (be safe, chock wheels, etc) and then abruptly release the gas...see if there is any engine movement or if you can pinpoint the noise. If not, check those dog bones while in park to see if they are loose or worn. Next, on the passenger side, the 'dog bone' engine mount doesnt actually connect to the engine, but to a another mount. Check this, as it does tend to break. (And I am willing to bet this is the cause of your noise). If these both check out ok, there is an engine mount down below (the transmission mount is on the driver side), It can be that, but it is the hardest mount to get to. And last, if that check out, there is a rare chance it can be a suspension component. Possible, but I doubt it. Hope this helps

My car jolts when shifting, and when going from park to drive. I just got a new transmission and disappointed. Is this a possible issue? When rolling and re applying gas sometimes it jolts too.
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 4 жыл бұрын
This can be a few things, even including a transmission not installed correctly or a 'lemon' (although that is unlikely). However, the mounts can definitely be an issue. There is 4 mounts...2 at the front of the engine (the 'dog bones'), one on the driver side (this video) and one on the passenger side. Any one of those could be bad, and cause the issue. I had an issue very similar to yours a couple of years ago. Stand at your engine, and look at the two engine mounts at the front. We are looking at the one on your left, which is closer to the battery. It mounts to the front frame, and to the engine. However, the part where it mounts to the engine, it can break or crack. This had caused me the exact issues you were having. For reference, I found a video someone else filmed showing the engine mount in question. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXyxh5dneZtpnJY Check that part out for any breaks or cracks. Have someone go in the car and just shift from part to drive, to reverse, to park, etc, and see if you can pinpoint where the engine jolting is coming from. Hope this helps.

I just got myself that comfortable cruiser thanks! I d like to have an aluminum subframe, cuz it also absorbs more vibrations then steel! And lighter, and basically rustproof. BTW if u need more stability while cornering try to install thin sway bar bushings [in Autozone theres aftermarket red 2-3mm thickness bushings + brackets just for 20 bux for any size sway bars.. AND TRUST ME ITS WORTH EVERY DIME], they goes as a set with nuts, washers, and a c-bracket, ive done it on a 2001 Chevy Blazer{rear and front}- and was SHOCKED with steering improvement and overall feeling on an uneven pavement-CAR FEELS LESS BUMPY SOMEHOW; im running 17x9.5 Corvette rims on it... Notice on our W- body rear sway bar links are balljoint kind. Im goin to do the same with front one! Hope it helps!

It's an awesome car. My sister had an Intrigue and absolutely loved it. I think the only reason she doesnt have it now is someone ran a red and t-boned her. But damn that car was strong. Although a right off, the exterior completely absorbed the entire impact. It is an awesome cruiser...enjoy! Sounds like all the right reasons to have the aluminum subframe. Just a matter of finding one, I think. The sway bar itself is fine for everyday use, but I wanted a bit more, so I did a rebuild front and rear (struts, springs, trailing arms, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, driveshafts, stabilizer bars and links, strut tower bars front and rear, etc) so it was just all part of my project. Hmmm...never thought of thin sway bar bushings. Sounds like an awesome upgrade. The car handles amazingly well, but I always believe there is room for improvements on any project (it is worth noting that my GP is no longer my daily driver, but a project car). I will definitely look at those for a future project. Thanks for the tip! Let me know how the front ball-joint style links go once you get it all done!

My 2001 Grand Prix is squeaking when I shift from drive to reverse, I can hear the same squeak when I’m driving down rough roads. I’ve sprayed the transmission mount with lubricant and that didn’t help. It sounds like it’s coming from driver’s side engine bay down low. Please help I have a video on my channel demonstrating my problem. I can’t replicate the noise with the car off, the car has to be on and I have to shift from drive to reverse. I’ve shook the car and the engine every which way and can’t make the noise!

I think I figured it out. I have a cold air inductions cold air intake, and every time the engine moved significantly, the cone filter neck rubbed against the air box making a horrible squeak sound. After readjusting the filter, it seems to have gone away!

Hi Jake. I watched the video and that is a strange one. It was hard to hear it in the video, but it seems to be at its worst when you go into reverse. I really did not hear it at all when going into park or drive. If the sound is there for those drive positions, it is very hard to hear. Here is a couple of things to try (if you haven't done this already) 1. Open up the hood and have someone else shift just like you were. Be careful, of course. Just listen and see if you can pin point the noise even further. Sometimes just having that line-of-sight helps 2. If you are comfortable with it, you can disconnect the 2 front 'dog bone' mounts and rock the engine. See if you can hear the noise when you move the engine. Dont rock it too hard, just enough to see if you can replicate it. 3. If you know someone you REALLY trust and if you are REALLY comfortable with it, you can jack up the front end, on jack stands, and with the rear wheel chocked. Go underneath the car and have someone shift once again, with their feet on the brake. This one can be nerve-racking for some, so be very careful, but hopefully you can. see if you can find the noise that way. Right now, just basing it on nothing more than your description or the video, I am leaning on either a worn mount, or maybe even a trans issue. Hopefully the above tests will Let me know if you have any other questions

2000 impala makes a clunk noise when put in reverse. Could it be the transmission mount?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
It is mostly likely a mount for sure. It can be either the transmission mount, lower engine mount, 'dog bone' front engine mounts, or possible, the brackets the the dog bone mounts attach to on the engine block. A good way to tell is have someone shift the car while you have the hood open and try and listen for where the noise comes from. Front, left or right, it should hopefully give you a good idea of where to go next.

@@mrbreezeet1 It's not easy to see, like this one. It sits further in on the right side of the engine. It is very tight to get to (but very possible to do)

Any idea how to tell if the transmission or motor mount is bad? I have this noise when shifting from park to reverse and when doing a quick throttle tap. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3OscnVugZtpmsU

it can make some noise, similar to what you hear in your video. I have seen it much worse. Also, the video is not completely conclusive that it is the mounts or something else, and which mount is it. There are 4 mounts for these engines. One on each side by the wheels, and 2 in the front (dog bones). If the side ones are bad, you will get some pretty noticeable engine vibration at idle and when accelerating. If the front ones are bad, the engine will noticeably rock back and forth when accelerating... you will feel it. Even if you pop the hood and have someone rev the engine while in park, you will see the engine rock. Hope this helps.

Good question. I made the video to show anyone who needs to have it fixed so they can do it for themselves. As for me? My GP was my daily driver, but has now become my project car. So I have been upgrading different things as I go. I love the car but from my first car onwards, I always have to upgrade and tinker. Just my nature.

I bought it from ZZP. It is their solid poly trans mount. Hope that helps.

I've got engine and trans mount spacers that I need to put on. Does it matter whether they go on top or bottom of the mount?
@NexusAuto
@NexusAuto 5 жыл бұрын
the can only go on one way. The bolt patterns for both the engine and transmission mounts are spaced out differently on the top and bottom, so they can only go on one way. Hope that helps out.
