Would like to see more comprehensive video on tasker sequencing in integration with smartthings and home assistant. I think nfc tags are underrated for routines and automation. A blackout (turn Everything off) routine for the spouse that doesn't like talking to a voice assistant is convenient. Near the garage and front door. I know these videos probably take longer than people realize because of how intricate the information is. I love your work.

We’re on tank water being rural and I’ve an nfc next to the tank opening. I measure water levels a couple of time a week in summer with a tape measure and so I’ve set up an iOS shortcut that takes the tape measure distance from rim of tank to top of water, takes it away from the total depth of the tank then calculates the current capacity along with a menu note and date time stamp in a “drafts” file and also txts the result to a list of adults in the household to notify them of current levels which acts as a reminder if we need to conserve water / get a water delivery (if rain isn’t forecast in the near future). The drafts file allows me to graph water usage against another shortcut added via “charty” to display water utilisation over time. Works well 🎉👍. Btw keep up the great work Reid, love the videos. ✅

@Smart Home Solver - there is actual a way to play spotify using NFC tags and the shortcuts app on an iPhone. It is a bit of a workaround but it works though: How am I gonna do it? - copy e.g. the URL of a certain playlist or song - go to your shortcuts app - add action: Open URL (paste your Spotify Link into it) - ad action: play/pause on iPhone more advanced: (add more actions to the steps above) - add action: set volume 0 - add action: set playback destination to: Living Room (or any other airplay devices) - add action: set volume 30 The reason why I first change the volume to 0 and then back up to 30 is that while running the automation, your iPhone plays spotify for a second or two till it changes its playback destination. In order to simply avoid that, I first "mute" the sound on my iphone to then bring it back up again, but then in the living room.
@unclekevo38643 жыл бұрын
The only issue with your method is the play/pause command doesn't work for the playlist URL, but only plays/pauses the last played song/playlist. It's an issue with iOS though, not your fault. Thanks for the tips!
@sjacobsen3 жыл бұрын
Other advanced work around would be to expose your own personal API endpoint that scrapes an authenticated spotify session and performs actions for you. I have a few automations setup myself already and it works great!

The problem with setting up via your phone, is that you have to setup each and every device. This is VERY time consuming, and when you get a new phone, you have to do this all over again. The better way is to keep the tags and automations centrally located on a smart home hub. Sure it's cool that certain versions of phones can store these, but by using one of the various hubs that are out there, one tag can be setup one time along with the automations. Then the user can give access to the people or devices that they want to.

This is going to be so awesome for my smart lock!!! My smart lock automatic lock has not worked out for me at all. It takes to long to lock and I'm not leaving my door until I hear it lock. I have it set to auto unlock with the app when I get home. And then the auto lock locks the door before I can get to the door. So ultimately I've had to wait until it locks before I leave and upon returning home have had to unlock my phone then open my smart lock app which then finally unlocks the door. I've been thinking it's just faster to use my keys. Until I saw this video. I do hope this will work with my smart lock. I have the WiFi August smart lock. If so, you just made my day. 😁

Great video 👍🏻 I’m also a massive fan of iOS Shortcuts. Bought a bunch of NFC stickers when support for these were announced last year, but found that it’s just as easy for me to use the shortcuts from the lock screen widgets. Made some pretty advanced ones that I also show on my channel with menus and stuff. While it’s a shame that the phone has to he activated (screen turned on) for the NFC automations to trigger, it’s still a little better than the bluetooth, location and SSID activated ones that cannot run without needing confirmation each time. I wish Shortcuts were available from CarPlay (they were for a short while when they were just introduced). It’s one of those places where they would really be helpful. I agree with your philosophy of “the less I have to open an app, the better” 😊

The only tags that work most of the time are the paper thin sticker tags that come on a roll. It looks like apple forgot to put an antenna in the phone. What a nightmare. . You can get a ( thin) tag to read via shortcuts but it will only trigger 50% of the time or so. Apple you made another expensive POS that just doesn't deliver ( And I am an iPhone user since 2007) . Hey Reed, I have a problem, since a while, I had been trying to make nfc automations, but the problem si that I want to use google Assistant, I realized that you can do it with iOS 14, but I have an android but I asked a friend to lend me his phone, I realized that if you así something to the Assistant, then it appears in Apple shortcuts, the thing is that as my friend has an IPhone 8, you cant use as a trigger the nfc taggs, so if it isnt a big problem, then I would like you to do it and see if the nfc tag works with an android phone that has the google home app with the same house. I’m also telling it to you because in the video you say that there isnt a google way to do it with an Assistant and I think it could be usefull for you automations and also for show it it in future videos, by the way great video as always. *The good news are that YOU CAN AUTOMATE things WITHOU an IFTTT SUBSCRIPTION* Steps: -Open shortcuts, use as a trigger something like battery, then in apps it appears google Assistant, you cant customize what you want it to do but just select one if the options that appear and finish the shortcut. - Open the Google Assistant app and ask for doing what you want the NFC tag to do (for example: “Ok Google, turn the lights on”) (you hace to do it in the same device that you want to use the shortcuts, so you cant ask it to do it from you google home mini because it wont work) -Then you open again the shortcuts app and make the routine with the nfc tag, it will apear you as a recomendación, what you’ve just asked to the Assistant. (Sorry if my english sucks)

I'm all in on Google and want to control some of my Google Home routines using NFC tags. Ideally, I'd like to be able to tap an NFC tag and have it run a Google home routine. If this isn't possible, I'd like to be able to issue a series of commands in a linear fashion that Google would be able to interpret, ie. "Turn off kitchen", "Set dining room main light to 30%", "Set living room lights to blue", etc. I tried Home Assistant, but the idea of always having a VM running is annoying. You can set up a virtual switch (usually it's a combo motion or contact sensor + switch in various hubs) that ports into Alexa, which you can then use as a trigger for an Alexa routine. Essentially, the NFC would trigger the virtual device, which would show as active or connected, etc. in Alexa, then prompt the routine. Make sure to have it auto-off either within Alexa or in the hub in the device settings so that it "resets" (best for a motion sensor + switch) unless you're looking for something to be triggered 2-directional (better for a contact sensor + switch).

What iPhone are you using? Is it iPhone SE (2nd Gen)? Also iPhones 7/7+/8/8+/X can use NFC tags in iOS 14 using the toggle in control centre. If it isnt there go Settings > Control Centre and look for NFC Reader. You need to create a shortcut with the actions that you want. Then use an app called NFC tools to write a shortcut to the tag. when scanned it should run the shortcut. This is a workaround but not as good as the newer devices

I’m using the SE 2nd gen. That’s a good work around for the other phones. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! For iOS users that prefer Home Assistant over shortcuts, do you know if there is a way to tap a programmed NFC tag and not have to then tap the “open NFC tag with Home Assistant” notification? Looks like Android will let you tap a tag without having to confirm a message on-screen. Thanks!
