field goals are worth 3 points in the open field on a drive at any point usually on 4th down. The record is 64 yards. Extra points after touchdowns used to be on the 5 yard line but they changed a few years ago to make it more tricky. So its kicked from the 25 i believe. Either way i love the videos! Keep up the great work and have a safe thanksgiving gents!

Hey Cameron. Extra points used to be ball spotted at the 2 yd line held at the 10 making it a 20 yd kick. Now the ball is snapped from the 15 and held at the 23 making it a 33 yd kick.

On extra points, the ball is typically spotted in the middle of the field, although I believe they can move as far as the hash marks to either side if the kicking team desires. On field goals, they kick from where the ball was downed, though no further left/right than the hash mark on the side it was downed.
@williamklumpenhower1188
@williamklumpenhower1188 3 жыл бұрын
The reason the field goal record is only 64 yards is because the opposition will be able to block it if the ball is at a lower angle. Therefore the kickers kick at a suboptimal angle in order to get the ball clear of the defense.
@docbearmb
@docbearmb 3 жыл бұрын
They always seem to kick field goals from the middle of the field because a play, including a field goal attempt, starts where the last play ended. Except, as you can see on the field there is a parallel set of marks running the length of the field. They’re called the hash marks. If a play ends outside of the marks (between the marks and a side line)the ball is brought to the nearest hash mark. If a play ends between the hash marks, it stays at that place for the start of the next play. Pushing things toward the middle of the field helps the offense. If that weren’t the case, the defense would have an advantage. The side line is thought of as a defender since it limits how far you can go to that direction.
@cantecleer
@cantecleer 3 жыл бұрын
One thing I would add is that there are kickers (mostly soccer style kicker) who sometimes benefit when kicking from a spot that is slightly off center, so in some cases, teams won't always try to perfectly center the ball's placement between the hash marks.

Yup. The pilgrims were in a bad way and the natives got them through the first winter. The next year at harvest they hosted large celebration meals (which looked little like the menu we know today as turkey wasn't there and lobster might have been one of the featured dishes) together with the natives in thanks for what they did, leading to about 50 odd years of peace before the grandchildren thought they were loosing their culture. So they started massacring settlers out of the blue, specifically targeting women and children. But getting off track, most Americans don't do a Christmas turkey. Turkey is exclusively for Thanksgiving. Most Americans will do a roast of some kind, most households have a Christmas ham (that's what my mom always does). And lastly, NFL on Thanksgiving has been done from the start of the league. The Lions feature most years having played 80 games out of 100 years, followed by the Cowboys with 50 odd. Chicago and Green Bay both played 36 times, and the only other team with at least 15 is Arizona oddly enough. Oh final though. When teams play on odd days like Thursday, they will try and schedule teams that would otherwise not had a full weeks rest that week before as one of their bye weeks. You might only have to play on a short week like that every year or two.

You can kick a field goal at anytime but once its kicked you lose possesion so its usually done to win a game, end of half, or when it's fourth down and they feel they can make it.... if they miss the other team takes over from the same spot if the kick goes out of play or the other team can return it if it stays in play. They also do kicks for one additional point after a touchdown

The playbooks in the NFL are generally huge and very very difficult to remember these guys who play in the NFL currently are typically top notch graduates from their respective college. There are multiples plays inside of the same formations (formation meaning the way the line up in the ball) but there are multiple plays inside a formation to make sure the QB can call and audible at the line of scrimmage if he would like to or if he needs to. Such as say the defense lines up in an obvious blitz package the QB will most likely call and audible and change to either a Draw running play (delayed handoff) or a quick pass play such as a play with 2 receivers running slant routes( and quick diagonal cut typically 5 yards or shorter towards the middle of the field)

Love that you guys are reacting to this. NFL football on Thanksgiving is an American institution. You were correct in that the Lions and Cowboys always play. They always play at home and the Lions play first, then the Cowboys. There is also a third game that is the night cap game. This year, it was gonna be the Ravens at Steelers, one of the best rivalries in the NFL but the Ravens had a COVID outbreak so the game was postponed to this Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins recovered in endzone, but due to muffed kick rules, the ball was awarded to them on one-yard line. Had Leon Lett (Cowboy) simply done nothing, the Cowboys would have automatically received possession as the play would have been whistled dead and the team would have received possession at the line of scrimmage. Since Lett went for the ball and touched it, by rule the play was considered a muffed kick and the Dolphins were given possession on the one-yard line with three seconds showing on the clock. Stoyanovich attempted a field goal from that spot and connected, winning the game.

Rule: To complete the act of a touchdown the receiver must catch the ball, and get two feet inbounds to complete the catch. That includes both the sides and the back of the endzone. The rule applies to any catch. You have to catch it, have control of the ball, and have two feet touch inbounds for it to count.

The main reason for the shorter Field Goal record, is that the defense is trying to block it, so the kick has to be kicked at a higher angle over the D-Line. If there was no D-Line, the ball could be kicked at a much shallower angle, and Field Goals could probably be made from 70 yards out

So a few different things. The majority of NFL games start at 1:00 Eastern time on Sundays. A smaller amount of games start at 4:25 or so Eastern time. These games are broadcasted locally. So like, if you live in Chicago and the Chicago Bears are playing, it'll be broadcasted on your free broadcast TV network(CBS or FOX). And it'll likely be broadcasted in the cities around Chicago that have a lot of Bears fans. And say that they're playing the Detroit Lions, for example, It'll also be broadcasted in Detroit and most of the cities near Detroit. But each individual TV "market" decides which games they'll broadcast. Sunday Night football is just one game. Its broadcasted nationwide. Monday Night football is just one game. Its broadcasted nationwide(but MNF is on ESPN, which is cable TV, so people do have to pay for cable services to watch it). The Lions and Cowboys thanksgiving games are broadcasted nationwide. In fact, the Thanksgiving Day games are amongst the most watched regular season NFL games of the year.

~ 12:00 - 12:20 There are a couple factors which increase the difficulty of a gridiron field goal over a rugby penalty or a soccer free kick. First, timing. Like a golf shot, the motion for kicking a field goal is all about rhythm. The difference is that there are three components. The snap, meaning the pass between the center's legs to the man holding the ball. The hold... The holder must catch the snap and place the ball at the correct angle to the ground - which may change according to left or right placement, wind, distance, etc. On the transverse axis, the ball may be placed anywhere between the hashmarks, or roughly the middle third of the field. Most kickers favor a draw, or in-swinger trajectory. I.e. a right footed kicker ideally wants the ball on the left hash mark. Finally, the kick itself. If steps one and two are off, the kicker's rhythm is shot, and the odds of a successful attempt drop. The next thing to consider is the defense. The further the attempt, the shallower the angle. A shallow angle makes the kick easier to block. Rugby penalties and post-try conversions are mostly uncontested. If the kicker attempts to lift the ball, he sacrifices distance. It would be like trying to make a 300 yard drive with your 3 wood. Some may be able to do it, but you stand a better chance of making the distance with your driver. The longest field goal on record is, I believe 64 yards. More long field goals are kicked in Denver than any other stadium. The altitude makes the air thinner, which decreases aerodynamic resistance of the ball in flight.

Just want to touch on a few points you guys made: We get the NFL on CBS, NBC, FOX and ESPN during the 17 game schedule each week... Almost every Sunday from 1 pm - 11pm we get all day football in America. Monday nights we get games which have been a tradition since the 1970s and recently Thursday nights as well. Friday night football is typically high school players and Saturday football games are usually college in the US. And yes Thanksgiving Thursday we usually get 2-3 games every year and Detroit and Dallas ALWAYS host a separate game each at home. For further reactions please watch: Randy Moss, Peyton Manning... all time great players And Barry Sanders and at 5:45 Calvin Johnson... the two greatest Detroit Lions players ever who both were on all time record career paces but suddenly retired at 30 years old, most likely because the Detroit Lions are a bad losing team for decades, are poorly run and have no championship aspirations.

When you say it’s effortless looking that’s what makes great coaches. Who will design pass routes that block or pick off defensive players by crossing routes and sometimes you’ll see a defensive player doing something like playing aggressively to jump a pass. You can call the right play and end up with a wide open receiver and make it literally a pitch and catch and it can look so easy. But that’s the hours of film watching knowing what play can do what. A great coach has 6-7 plays like that each game and they know when to use those plays.

To clarify the penalty talk, some are spot fouls and some are from where play started. For example a false start (moving before the ball is hiked) is 10 yards against the offense from where the play started. Pass interference (kinda complicated to explain without tape but interfearing with a reciver) is a new set of downs from where it was called. So it could be a 2yard or 60 yard penalty. Then you have holding (grabbing a players jersey to slow them down) is a 5 or 10 yard penalty from where it happened.
@ricardosaenz569
@ricardosaenz569 3 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that it is a different ball being kicked off the ground, but its also important to remember the endzone is an additional 10 yards and the kick happens another 8-10 yards off the ball, and it has to be high enough to go over the 10 foot goal post. So a 60 yrd field goal is in the air for more like 80 yards!!

8:22 - The *Butt Fumble.* To viewers who are unfamiliar with gridiron football, its history, or the NFL: this is widely considered the most embarrassing play to ever happen. Warning: what follows is a long-winded, unnecessarily patronizing explanation for non-football fans. In this instance, the Jets (in green), are in possession of the ball, and therefore on offense. In a huddle that took place prior to the start of the play, and out of earshot of the defense (in this case, the Patriots), the offense would have chosen one of a number of pre-determined and rehearsed plays, typically classified as either a *running* or *passing* play. Once this has been decided, the offensive players then move to their assigned positions on the field. On a typical, middle-of-the-field play such as this one, the offensive players typically align in a formation that could be used to execute either a running _or_ passing play. This is done with the intent of preventing the defense from deducing your plan, and therefore being unable to counter you effectively (there is a degree of this same masking of strategy/intent on the part of the defense as well, but that’s a level of detail that a casual viewer doesn’t need to hear about to enjoy this clip). In this instance, the Jets have selected a running play. As sometimes happens, however, a miscommunication between offensive players during the selection of the play, or a player’s misunderstanding of his assigned alignment or task, has resulted in a strategic blunder. Upon the ball being 'snapped' to begin the play, Mark Sanchez, QB for the Jets (number 6), is supposed to move backwards with the ball while turning specifically to his right, and hand it off to a running back who is already moving forward, and expecting the ball to be securely placed in his grasp without breaking his stride. Unfortunately, Sanchez turns to his left. Because the success of the play was based significantly upon timing, the running back has already passed Sanchez by the time the QB has turned in the right direction. As such, it is wiser for the running back to, rather than move back for the ball, instead become a blocker for the QB, and hope Sanchez can make the most of it. While it is true that quarterbacks are _permitted_ to carry the ball forward themselves, Sanchez-a pro athlete, no doubt-is the sort of QB who isn’t known for being exceptionally fast or agile. It is still common within the sport to have a QB whose abilities are limited in such a way-the idea being that they have trained instead for strategy, mental acuity, and passing accuracy-but is the reason why it is extraordinarily rare for him to run *by design.* Because Sanchez is not prepared to run with the ball, and because his linemen have not effectively "plowed the road" for him, his best option is to just move forward as quickly as he can, and aim for any gap that might open amidst the chaos in front of him. If no such gap exists, it is in the QB’s best interest to slide, feet first, in a forward direction. Because the quarterback is typically one of the team’s most prized/valuable assets, there exists a specific rule-to help prevent his injury-that forbids defensive players from tackling him, *so long as he has slid in this particular fashion,* thereby indicating to the defense that he is "giving up". Sanchez is attempting to slide in this way, but perhaps a little later and closer to the scrum than ideal. Additionally, the defensive lineman closest to Sanchez’s intended direction is a freakishly strong guy named Vince Wilfork (number 75 in white/blue). As Sanchez is about to begin his slide, Wilfork overpowers the Jets offensive lineman, lifting and pushing him backwards into Sanchez, *ass first.* The collision is so jarring and unexpected that the ball is knocked loose from Sanchez’s grip before he can complete his slide-meaning it is still considered 'live', and therefore, a _fumble._ Okay, there’s your boring nuts and bolts explanation for how the peculiar mechanics of the sport facilitated this hilarious atrocity. Hopefully it didn’t suck the fun out of it for you.

fairly sure the records 64 yards (64 meters for you) the difference in yards on kicks, say your kicking from the 20 yards line, thats about 35 yard field goal because you add the distance between the uprights and the touchdown goal line plus the 5 yards between where the balls snapped to where the holder catches it, adding 15 yards to it. so basically to dumb it down just always add 15 yards to where ever it being kicked, hope that sums it up lol

Hey guys! Love your stuff, and Happy Thanksgiving (though I know it's not a holiday for the UK). To answer your network questions, yes, for the most part you can watch more than a few games on regular networks (non-cable), such as NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX. For the Thanksgiving games that I watched today, the first game pitted the Detroit Lions against the Houston Texans, and it was on CBS at noon today. The afternoon game was the Dallas Cowboys against the Washington Football Team (formerly known as the Redskins. They changed their team name after years of protests for the term Redskin, as it's a derogatory insult for Native Americans). Houston beat Detroit 41-25, while Washington beat Dallas 41-16. I didn't get to see the Detroit game, but I saw the Washington/Dallas game, and for the latter, both teams were 3-7 in the season (won 3, lost 7). So it was really kind of a needless game to watch, and it was more embarrassing seeing Dallas lose how they did than anything. When you see two losing teams play each other, it's commonly referred to as a tank game, or Tank Bowl. I recommend watching a channel called Urinating Tree, who does a weekly summary of the NFL games every Wednesday. Believe me you'll be very entertained, and he really does a great job in summarizing each game and team play throughout his videos. Sorry to be so long winded. Hope you guys are doing well and are staying in good health, and I look forward to more of your reaction videos as well. Cheers!!

Detroit has played on Thanksgiving Day every year since 1934, so that tradition is actually pretty old. Dallas has played on Thanksgiving Day every year since 1966 except 1975 and 1977. Since 2006, there has been a 3rd Thanksgiving game, but there is no set team for that one. There were Thanksgiving games before 1934, also with no set team involved.

Record length for field goal is 66 yards. Or 198 feet. It’s not always a straight on kick. Depends where the previous play ended. If it was left side of the field you kick from the left hash mark. Sometimes to line it up for a straight ahead kick they will do a running play and have the running back try to keep it in the middle so it’s an easier kick.

A field goal is worth 3 pts. Touchdowns are worth 6, & the extra points after the touchdown are either 1 point for a kick (always 33 yards out from the goal posts), or teams can try for a 2 point conversion, which would be another pass play or a run from the 2 yard line. The strategy of American football is really just to move the ball 10 yds down the field, in 4 attempts, or downs. If the ball does move that 10 yards, then a new set of downs are awarded. If the ball doesn't move 10 yards, then the 1st down becomes 2nd, becomes 3rd, becomes 4th. If the ball isn't advanced 10 yards, or past the initial down marker, on the 4th try, then the opposing team gains possession on that 4th down mark. So a team would rather kick the ball farther down field, rather than give the ball to the opposing team while it's relatively close to the end zone.

What happened on the Miami play is this (it gets complicated): Dallas tried to kick a FG. Miami blocked it. The play doesn’t end. Usually it’s over because either a) players stop playing and refs just kind of call the play off or b) someone from Miami will touch the ball, ending the play. BUT.... If an offensive player (Dallas) touches the ball first, it’s considered a live ball and the defense can attempt to advance it. So when Leon Lett (btw you should watch this guy, he was an absolute freak athlete) touched the ball for Dallas, the ball became live. Miami recovered the ball in the end zone, which made it a touchdown. That’s 6 pts. Then they kicked the extra point for the complete 7 and won the game.
@killahsith
@killahsith 2 жыл бұрын
Actually Miami was attempting a game winning field goal that was blocked by Dallas. If the blocked kick goes behind the line of scrimmage it is a live ball and the offense can advance it. In this game the ball deflected past the line of scrimmage therefore Miami could do nothing. Once they touch the ball, it becomes a dead ball. Once the ball stops, the refs blow the play dead. But if a defensive player touches the ball it becomes live again. Leon Lett hit the ball and it was recovered by Miami short of the end zone. Miami then kicked the game winning field goal. Lett was a great player who got caught up in the moment and made a boneheaded play

Field goals are usually attempted when it is 4th down and a long ways to go for a 1st down and the line of scrimmage is within about 40 yards of the goal posts. It counts for 3 points. If you are too far to kick a field goal on 4th down and you don't want to try for and miss getting a first down you usually just punt (kick) the ball it to the other team.

Thanksgiving day games in the NFL go back to the 1920s; the Lions become became a traditional host in 1934, the Cowboys in 1966 (Cowboys have only been around for about 60 years). The FG attempts, usually occur once a team crosses the 50 yrd line (midfield) going towards their goal. Generally once you hit about the 35-40 yd line you are considered in "FG range" because you have to add 17 yrds to the kick, 10 yrds from the end goal line to the back of the end zone, and 7 yrds for the holder; so usually the FG attempt is done when a team is on the scoring half (or opponents half). Very rarely will a kicker attempt a kick with the ball being place held at the 50 or in their own defensive half. Longest FG made in the NFL is 64 yrds. The reason 60+ yrd(and most 50+ yrd) attempts aren't often attempted is because if the ball is short the other team has a chance to return it, kind of like a punt. NFL is on regular broadcast/over the air TV on FOX (NFC and Thursday night), CBS (AFC and Thursday Night) and NBC (Sunday Night Football). Monday Night Football is on ESPN which is a cable/satellite network. Some games are also carried on the NFL Network which is also cable/satellite TV.

A lot of these clips have background stories that make the moments better. Like Randy Moss was upset he wasn't drafted by the Cowboys so he went all out on them. Leon Lett has multiple Super Bowls and is still a coach for the Cowboys today, but he's forever known in town for his plays where he messed up.

Hi guys. The Mannings were a great football family. Peyton and Eli both played in the NFL. Supposedly their other brother was thought to be the best of the three as a young player, but was injured and ended his football days in either high school or college. Also their dad Archie was a quarterback in the NFL as well. Stay safe and well. Former Oakland Raider coach turned broadcaster John Madden started the awarding of turkey legs after the game to his choices for best players of the game. Over the years it became so popular they started having as many as 6 legs with the turkey. Oh here is another NFL tradition. The flyover. Very cool. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKfCZ6Sfe6aihpI

Since its inception in 1920, the National Football League has played games on Thanksgiving Day. The NFL's Thanksgiving Day games have traditionally included one game hosted by the Detroit Lions since 1934, and one game hosted by the Dallas Cowboys since 1966 Since 1978, the Lions and Cowboys have hosted a game on Thanksgiving every year. Detroit always plays the early game, followed by Dallas in the late afternoon and a rotating prime-time matchup added in 2006.

NFL games are covered by CBS and FOX for the daytime games on Sunday, with the night game coverd by NBC. And then the Monday night game is covered by ESPN. Thursday night games are now covered by FOX, while they were originally covered by the NFL Network, which I think may have gone under. DirectTV has a NFL package where you can watch every game on separate Alternative channels if the game isn't covered on your local channels.

Long field goals aren’t automatic. To make a long try, the kicker has to kick it at a flatter trajectory, so it can be easier to block. Maybe there is a video of blocked kicks.

The field goal record is like 63 yards in a game and the reason it isn’t to long is because you have huge fast guys running at you and you have 3 seconds to react. In practice when nobody is running at the kicker they can make 70 yarders
@mfree80286

That 70 yarder has a trajectory that one of those huge fast guys can easily reach up and smack, that's a bigger reason why they fail.

Placement of the ball for a kick depends on where the previous play ended but within the "hash marks". If it is outside the hash mark on the right then the kick occurs within the hash marks but as far right as possible.

Peyton Manning played most of his career at Indianapolis. In retirement he does Insurance commercials in a very humorous way, as Peyton was always known for his quirky sense of humor. His younger brother Eli was QB for the Giants and I believe retired himself in the last year or so. In his case he retired at a low point in his career as he was not doing very good.

The record for kicking is 63 yards. The kick is not always kicked from the middle. There are two hashes on each side of the field, the ball is always going to be placed between the hashes depending on where the previous play ended. So if you run to the right side outside of the hash, the ball will be placed on the right side of the hash. Right legged kickers often struggle with kicks on the right hash because of the angle, they are not straight in front of the field goal posts
