Everyone after the Cousins signing: "he's 36 coming off an achilles tear." Everyone after their 1st pick: "why'd they get a QB in case Cousins gets injured?" Yeah, the mistake is when they went after Kirk (costing them picks) & throwing that much $ at him, not the stuff they did after.

It's the now and later. The issue is that they couldn't count on being able to get the QB that they wanted to get in the draft, along with a decent one in free agency for the "just in case." Was it expensive? Sure. Was it "win now" mentality? Absolutely. I love the thought process.

It can't be understated how much nothing was behind Kyren and Jacobs on the depth chart. Deep Day 3 RB picks are typically guys that are looked at for RB 3/4 or special teams roles. RB2 is still a role that needs filled by teams and the Rams/Packers are teams that had *nothing* there. Yes Packers have AJ Dillon but whatever weird contract thing they signed him to seems more like Make-a-Wish grant than anything.

The only thing I can think about this Atlanta pick of Penix Jr is that they are worried they might incur future draft picks penalty over the next year or two, and had to get ahead of the curve on drafting a QB to eventually replace Cousins. I'm probably totally off, but it's the only thing that I can think of to justify that pick!

The reason the falcons took penix at 8 is apparently because that gm was in the war room for the saints at 11 and they all had huge grades on mahomes and thought they had kept it quiet enough but the chiefs traded above them and took him. This war room had a massive grade on penix, I don’t agree with the grade on penix however I’m not an nfl scout

As a falcons fan I love the Penix pick. It's literally the #1 player I wanted when the falcons were on the board. Cousins can get us to the playoffs, but isn't good enough to do any more than that. He will coach up Penix for a year or two. Then we will cut him after the 2nd season for 10 mil dead cap and we will have an amazing franchise QB ready to play.

The Falcons have to make a lot of decisions on guys with extremely high draft capital in the next 1-3 years. There arent great QB prospects right now in that time period. They dont expect to have a high draft pick during those years. Kirko may come back not as good from this injury. History shows us more Rae talent QBs benefit from sitting and learning the system for a year or two. I thought it was ballsy but a great risk and i liked the move. I am a Vikings fan too

Don’t sleep on Josh Jacobs this year. RBs have off years. Don’t forget the year before he was the most dominant RB in the league. Also forget about AJ Dillon. Packers have talked about making him a FB

If Kirk gets hurt like Aaron did last year, ask yourself this, would you rather have Zach Wilson or Michael Penix??? The one time the Footballers failed to see the positive. Kirk is coming off a season ending injury, he is 35, he can get hurt again and Falcons offense is being held back by bad QB play, and it can happen again if Kirk gets hurt and there’s no backup play in place

I know Penix was a strange pick and I get the initial confusion over it but I really dont understand the continued lack of conclusion being drawn by all these football and fantasy channels. It made sense to me pretty quickly once you factor in a few things. One, it is a VERY conservative pick, but not a stupid one, and considering ATL's entire front office looks like they're as old as Arthur Blank himself, is that really a surprise? So, starting there, yes they brought in Kirk and paid him big money, probably with no concerns over his health to start the year, and they're expecting big things out of him for the next few years, aka playoff contention, SB. Meaning no more high draft picks for the foreseeable future in their opinion, and add in the tampering issues from signing Kirk and those picks might get stripped from them altogether. So, in their minds this couldve been their last realistic chance to draft a future QB for years to come and Kirk might be retired after only 3. But why Penix? Why at 8? Well, they had already received multiple calls from QB needy teams trying to trade up with them, so they probably knew they couldnt move back and still get him, or any QB for that matter. But if its just to have Kirk's successor in place, why not go with McCarthy instead? Younger, still needs some time to develop.. but thats the issue. As i said, Falcons expect to win NOW, but Kirk is also coming back from a major injury at 37 and while there's no concern with his recovery to start the season, reinjury is always a risk. And we all saw just last season what happens to a talented team when their franchise QB goes down and the team has no one else in place to take the reigns with Rodgers and Kirk himself. Penix is far more experienced and would in theory be more NFL ready to step in than a McCarthy would to keep the team afloat if Kirk were to go down THIS season. Falcons dont wanna sacrifice their window of opportunity THIS year so they're playing it SUPER safe just in case while also setting themselves up for the future at the same time. And if he does have to sit for a few years, he'd only be a year or two older than Love was by the time Penix gets his start, which for a QB means at least another decade of playing most likely. I dont exactly agree with the pick, but Penix serves multiple purposes for them at the same time and I get why they did it. Im not even a Falcons fan but yeah, thats my extensive explanation lol

Adding to the ballers point about not drafting a CB need and going Penix instead doesnt help ATL win this year. That is true, right up until the point Kirk maybe gets injured again. How much is a rookie CB gonna help you win in that situation then? This is what I mean, I love these guys but it feels like everyone is taking such an obtuse view on this, scrabbling around with a vague shrug as their conclusion. No, its not the best pick they could've made, except maybe it actually is if something happens to 37 year old Kirk again this year
