The teams were taking multiple delay of games/false starts because the clock keeps running. Had nothing to do with field position on either of them. Belichick was too stubborn to take a timeout because his old player (Vrabel) was getting the better of him. The rule was changed recently

It’s also to drain clock. Why not shave a minute if you can. Obviously the field positioning is a bigger part but I’m sure these teams having the lead and doing this for clock has something to do with it at least. What a wild time in the NFL tho lol

They were doing it to drain the clock, but the field position is important because their location on the field is what enables them to give up 5 or 10 or 15 yards without negatively impacting their defensive field position after the punt. If they were punting from their own 20 they wouldn't be willing to give up those extra yards to kill an extra minute, but doing it from the opponents 40 means those extra yards don't matter, the punter can reach the endzone from 40 or 50 yards out all the same.

For the safety play at 9:34. The Patriots were losing by 1 and punting would give the Broncos the ball with great field position. So they took a safety, gave the Broncos 2 points, but were allowed to punt 30 yards further up the field. The Patriots defense stopped the Broncos after the safety punt, got the ball back, and then scored the game-winning touchdown. Genius move by Bill Belichick

10:15 The return man (Cobb) intentionally had one foot out of bounds because the rules state (only on kickoffs, not punts) that if the ball or the returner is out of bounds when receiving the kick, the kicking team will receive a penalty that would move possession for the return team to the 40 yard line (which is superb for the return team)

The benefit of having a foot out of bounds when you receive a kickoff is because a kickoff that goes out of bounds automatically gives the receiving team the ball at the 40. During a kickoff the kicking team has to kick the ball in play or kick it through the end zone (touchback). A kickoff out of bounds (not through the endzone) is a penalty. Because he had 1 foot in a 1 foot out, the rule considers that a kickoff that went out of bounds.
@paulobrien9572
@paulobrien9572 2 жыл бұрын
The reason they were holding in the first example is that that the game cannot end on a defense penalty but can end on an offensive penalty. Two points were awarded (safety)because the offensive team committed the penalty while the ball was in the end zone. Similarly if say Holding on the offense is called while the QB still has the in the end zone that is also a safety
@Pokeysaurus
@Pokeysaurus 2 жыл бұрын
Also, the reason why the defensive players(receiving team) were not trying that hard to rush the punter, is because generally only one or two players will actually go for the punter. The rest are trying to block the offensive players for the return, because the offense will be the ones trying to tackle the returner. Obviously they didnt have to, because the punter never kicked the ball. The few defensive/receiving players who DID try to get to the punter were grabbed and held by the punting team.

One thing about NFL commentators is they obsessively explain the strategy and rules behind everything. So if you’ve watched football for 5+ years, usually you know the majority of these extreme nuances. That’s half the fun of the sport (and one of the reasons Americans love football even though Europeans insist there’s too much stoppage). All of that time where you think “nothing” is going on Americans are passionately debating the strategy of every single play.

The first one was a punt. That was the Ravens' punter with the ball. The Bengals (team in white) sent most of their players deep to set up blocks for a good punt return figuring that was their only chance to score a touchdown with 11 seconds left. So you had only a few guys rushing the punter and the Ravens were committing "holds" (grabbing jerseys, pulling guys down, etc.) all over the place to prevent those guys from getting near the punter knowing the holding penalties wouldn't matter.
@TheOtherOne111

The difference between Belichick and Vrabel exploiting that loophole was the motivation behind it. Bill did it not for hubris but because it wouldnt impact the outcome of that game. He wanted to expose bad rules to get them fixed, and did it when it would matter as little as possible, rather than use it in a major game with playoff implications. Once he did that its on the NFL to get it fixed.

In that last clip... the rule is that if a team kicks the ball out of bounds, the receiving team gets the ball on the 40 yard line. That's different from a touchback, which puts the ball on the 25 yard line. The quirk in this rule is that the kick didn't go out of bounds, but the player was standing out of bounds when he "received" it. That counts as the same as the kick going out of bounds.

It's important to note that the Titans/Patriots game happened the same season of the Patriots/Jets game. Belicheck and the Pats did it to the Jets early in the season and then had their own medicine handed to them later the same season. Also really impressed with how you picked up on the delay of game when punting to give yourself some extra room to kick. Little things like that that not even seasoned football fans know much about. Edit: Wanted to also note that the rule was changed after that year because of how it was being abused. And the last play the penalty is called "Illegal Procedure" and the receiving team will get the ball at the 40 yard line. It's called when the kicking team kicks the ball out of bounds in play (not in the endzone). Since the receiver was "out of bounds" when he touched the ball, the ball is considered to have gone out of bounds without anyone touching it and therefore a flag. It's why you see most kickoffs go through the back of the end zone or in the middle of the field. Don't want to give the other team any unnecessary yardage.

The delay of game thing was all about burning time off the clock. Daz' punting description is accurate to why you don't kick, but what they're really doing here is burning clock. Mike Vrabel (TN coach) played for Bellichick for years. That was the student outdoing the teacher with his own tactics.

The way ball control, field position, and clock management works in American football has a fair amount of similarity to some of the defensive plays in Football (soccer). The sense of sacrificing small things to gain big manifests in each game differently, but there is a similar game within a game always happening beneath the surface.
@Guy_de_Loimbard

On the first play, it wasn't that the receiving team wasn't trying to get to the punter... it's that they were all being held illegally by the punting team's line. That's why there were flags flying all over the place. Ordinarily the receiving team would have another chance to receive the punt even after time expires, but the fact the game ended in a score in their favor took that option away from them. In the second one was for field position like Daz was speculating for the third one. But the third was was more about clock managemet.

4:04 These next two clips are linked. Here we see Bill Belichick, the head coach of the Patriots, purposefully take penalties for delay of game and offsides. The reason is that the clock runs after each penalty when the quarter has over 5 minutes remaining. Belichick was refreshing his play clock (time an offense has to start a play before being penalized) while also taking time off the game clock that the Jets really needed. This was during a blow-out regular season game, and was Belichick essentially rubbing salt in the wounds of his division rival. The clip after that is from the same season. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel used the same tactic against Belichick to run the clock down to 5 minutes during a playoff game. The Titans would ultimately win. I never get tired of seeing Belichick throw a fit on the sideline for getting a taste of his own medicine.

These plays are a kin to all the tricks soccer players use to kill time. These were ways to continually keep the clock running by using self inflicted penalties in order to replay the down over while keeping the clock running/ and or run the entire clock out.

In the Cincy/Baltimore game, every player on the Ravens held which resulted in penalties. By rule, the game can only be extended by a defensive penalty. So, by holding until time expired, then having the punter step out of the end zone ends the game, even though there's probably 7 or 8 holds on the play.
@christophermckinney3924
@christophermckinney3924 2 жыл бұрын
In the first clip, the defense expected the offense to punt, which would have given them the ball back at around mid field with a chance to score. The defense was falling back to receive the punt which is why they didn't rush the punter. This gave the punter the time to run out the clock and then run out of bounds. He could have just as easily run out the clock, come out of the endzone and ended it at the one yard line which would have also ended the game but because her was will to give up two points, it changed the possession turn over from one in which the other team got the ball where it went down to one in which the other team would have had to receive a punt from the 20 yard line. It woudl have run out the clock anywya which is why the game ends by rule with a safety.

@pauldoser9873

This video is edited so that the commentators explanation of the loopholes are not clear. In the first play, there was too much time left to be able to run a play and kill the clock so the Ravens lined up for a punt. However, instead of punting, all the blockers just illegally grabbed the receiving team players so they couldn't get to the punter. That's why it didn't look like the defense wasn't rushing the punter because they were basically being tackled by the blockers. This drew penalties for holding, but since time had expired, the game was over. A penalty on the defense, with no time left, extends the game for one untimed down, but a penalty on the offense doesn't. On the second and third plays, if there is a presnap penalty while the clock is running, the clock keeps running after the penalty yardage is assessed. You have to snap the ball within 40 seconds or it is a penalty. The teams took that penalty which reset the play clock to 25 seconds, I believe. Then before that 25 seconds was up, the teams intentionally took a false start penalty, which reset the 25 second play clock. Basically, they were able to burn an additional 50 seconds off the game clock in exchange for losing 10 yards which doesn't matter because they are punting anyway. The fourth play is that by punting from their own end zone, the opposing team will likely get the ball very close to field goal range which would put them up by four requiring the kicking team to score a touchdown with very little time. By snapping it over the punters head, they give up two points but get to punt from the 20-yard line so the opposing team will be farther from field goal range making a stop more likely. If the Patriots do get the stop, they only have to get to field goal range to force overtime where they hope to win. The fifth play was explained well in that kicking the ball out of bounds on a kickoff is a penalty that puts the ball at the 40-yard line.

on the first play, taking the safety isn't the crazy part, it's that the entire offense was assigned a target and held them so that they couldn't get to the ball before time ran out. every single offense member committed the foul of holding, that was the strange loophole because none of those penalties matter because the game is over after that play.

The first clip you ran concerns penalties on the last down of a half or the game. The safety was not the important part, at least on this play. The half or game can not end on with a defensive penalty on the last play. It can end with an offensive penalty on the last play. The Ravens were setup to punt the ball but did not want to take the chance that the punt could be run back for a game tying touchdown and extra point. So they put the ball in play and were prepared to take the safety. The safety could have been awarded for two rules infractions. Firstly, an offensive penalty that occurs while the ball is in your own endzone results in a safety. Secondly, if the ball carrier steps out of bounds in the endzone a safety is awarded. Both happened on this play.
