@@raulv0417 - I have a hard time believing that a loose ball in the end zone, where it hasn't been clearly recovered by either team, would spontaneously be awarded as a TD. That's like saying the penalty for Pass Interference could be a TD. There might be examples of *egregious* unsportsmanlike conduct resulting in that (such as in the video)... but doing that for an on-field 'football play' just wouldn't happen in any practical sense. Every sport has tactical-fouls... You can't invent the most extreme example for what you think might have (or even probably would have) happened. The only counter-example to this is in the NHL where a goal is automatically awarded if a player commits a penalty against an opponent on a breakaway against an open net - and there's a player safety aspect to that - if the normal penalty was applied (a penalty shot with the goalie in the net), then players would be tacking each other and throwing their sticks down the ice to prevent the goal.

The one I have never, ever seen and it's in the rule book, both NCAA and pro, is the illegal fair catch signal. Video #1 displayed an invalid fair catch signal, because the receiver didn't extend his arm above his head. That's invalid. An illegal signal, though, is made when the scrimmage or free kick crosses the neutral zone, that is, strikes the ground. I only saw once a guy coming in from the bench and tackle the runner. The penalty in NCAA rules is clear although it appeals to the referee's judgement to award a TD or not. Very good series of videos. Thanks.
@pronkb000

One other quirk of the fair catch rules: a returner has fair catch protection until (or if) the ball hits the ground. There was a college game a few years ago where the returner fair-caught, and then bobbled the ball. The gunner hit him and recovered it, but was flagged for fair catch interference because the ball was still in the air.
@eauhomme

I seem to remember one where a kick receiver gave a fair catch signal but someone else caught the ball and was flagged. I don't recall if it was advanced illegally or if the fair catch itself was called illegal.

@@eauhomme The advance is illegal, because by signaling, you're agreeing not to advance the ball at all, including your teammates. An illegal fair catch signal, though, is one made after the ball has touched the ground, from what I recall.

To me the illegal kicking to the back of the end zone isn't a "penalty". Like, ok, it went out of bounds back there. If it went out on its own because of legal actions, the other team would have gotten a safety anyway. I feel like a penalty that will give them status quo should be "upgraded" so to speak. He kicked it to sacrifice getting a safety over a touchdown. Other team should have gotten a touchdown from that. Or at minimum, penalty on the "kickoff" when they punt after the safety. But the defense should not be allowed to kick a fumbled ball into the back of the end zone to prevent a touchdown and get a safety as a result when a ball rolling back there on its own would have given the same result.

@@wehavethemeats4004 My point being: why should the penalty of kicking out a loose ball that's in the end zone be a safety when it's a ball that can be easily picked up by the defense for a touchdown? You'd get the same result if it rolled out on its own. A penalty should penalize. Not result in nothing different, or give a team that is receiving the penalty an advantage by actually breaking the rules. If you can get a better result by breaking the rules, your rules aren't written correctly.

My understanding of the rules is that, if a player, coach, trainer, or any other member of a team on the sidelines makes a tackle, the ball carrier is awarded a touchdown, whether he would have scored one or not. If a fan or someone not a member of the other team does it, the player is awarded a touchdown only if the officials determine that he would have scored one if not for the tackle. As far as I know, this is the only way the officials can award a team a touchdown. That last one was BS. Manning did not move his hands enough to draw the defence offside.
