I've said this before elsewhere, so at the risk of repeating myself, the mk4 has focus so good it feels like cheating. I come from the Lumix G9 and all I can say is there is no competition at all, Sony tracking is insanely good out off the box. I've been shooting soccer and instead of culling for the inevitable out of focus images I would get with attempts at tracking with the Panasonic system ( I usually give up and use zone focus to get keepers) all the shots are in focus. This with the mc11 and an old non IS Canon 70-200L f4. Thinking about the 100-400 GM, but the soccer season is over and with aps-c mode, and for youth soccer, the lens I have is pretty awesome and sharp. I've also been shooting with the Batis 85 at full frame and I'm blown away at the images. This is a camera and lens combination that I can use to save my photos for posterity and personal enjoyment. As a hobbyist, I'm not willing to settle anymore and the mark4 w Zeiss glass means I don't have to. I have a question for you later sir, but have to run now will be back soon.

Nick - I'm not a sports shooter but I really appreciate how you show the missed shots and what's going on instead of just your winners. Too often people assume the pros never miss or that they simply need to get better gear to get better photos like the pros. Truth is, gear only helps so much and even with experience, you still miss some shots. There is no silver bullet. I'm headed to Out of Oregon - see you there!

An easy way to determine where the AF point was at the time of exposure is to look at the image on the camera and hit the magnify button (with default settings it's the AF On button when playing back a shot). The camera by default magnifies centered on the location of the active AF point for that shot.

Well, that was fun to watch. For birding, I’ll stick with the A9. I have one possibly useful suggestion. The bird photographer Mark Smith has a configuration video for the A9 that I mostly follow. He suggests using two buttons for back-button focus. One activates an expandable zone system and the other a spot focus. Both will track a subject once it acquires it. The zone is the normal one for a bird that blasts into clear sky. The spot works when a bird is sitting deep in foliage, but you suspect it will soon take off. The zone will acquire the foliage, so you can use the time the bird is sitting to line up the spot focus. In either case, once you acquire the target the A9 will stick with it like grim death as long as you keep the focus button mashed down. I suspect that the spot focus might have helped you on those crowded shots that you missed.

Wonderful share, Nick. Appreciate you showing the thought process during the game and showing what you were capturing before post. Really hoping to take these concepts to the non profit events I do pro bono work for. i shoot australian rules football with a high res body and what people sometimes dont realise is that with all the megapixels, you can sacrifice some of the sharpness for noise reduction, plus downsizing also downsizes the noise. RE the 600mm, i tend to shoot a 400mm f2.8 and crop in - means more chance of getting the shot. By the time you crop down to the 600mm f4 "equivalent" you dont lose anything

Awesome work. Its was hard for me to deal with noise because often times we as photographers are zooming in 1:1 to inspect. Reality is, no one in real life is going to zoom into your photo 1:1.. only other photographers pixel peeping who really don't matter because they gonna hate anyway. If the shot looks good full screen, it will look amazing scaled down for social media/internet. People also have to know that shooting sports is always a high ISO situation unless its a day time no dome stadium. Night Varsity High School Football is the toughest sport to shoot because those fields likely have 4 light fixtures (two on each side of the field) so you will often shoot at 12,800 or 25,600 iso. The older the school the worse it is, but even newer schools don't light their fields well.

I saw this in other reviews of 7R mk.4 as well. It has more noise than mk.3 and the 24MP sensor in current Sony cameras. Apparently it's more of a studio/architecture/landscape type of camera, where one can keep the iso in tripple digits easily. That is what people typically see as intended purposes for pretty much all high-MP models tbh. Having said that, if not pixel peeping, these are great looking shots. Any website or print edition would happily use them. I believe the guys who makes graphics and need higher res will not frown on these either.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
agreed, people who say "too much noise" forget just how many megapixels they are peeping in on sometimes. compare this to a canon 5dSR and people will be impressed with the noise levels I think.

If the display is set to "Fit" the cropped image will be sized to fit within the frame of the window. The full, uncropped image may be displayed 1:8 to fit within the frame while the cropped image may display 1:4 or 1:2 to fit. So, Lightroom isn't making the crop larger. Another serious problem with the 600mm lens is that it produces a very narrow DOF and thus makes it impossible to produce hero images where all elements of the group are in focus. This can be seen in many of your photos where a 2.8 lens shot at 5.6 would have allowed a greater DOF. Your video was excellent and again demonstrates why the A9 and 400mm, 2.8 is the combination of choice for football.

Good video. I always feel sorry for the photographers who get trampled by the players. I almost want to go back and look at the highlights to see if I can spot you: and I would if you had been covering the Browns vs Ravens game.

I would love to shoot at a cowboys game. Any tips??

the biggest thing is.. work your way up, and network... start off shooting highschool football.. then get your foot in at the college level.. build that portfolio.. then network as much as you can to leverage that portfolio.

Not much money in it. The players get paid millions and most of the photographers are working for a sports wire and hardly make any money....it probably doesn't even cover the cost of the gear for a lot of the guys on the sideline. It's the same with college sports.

Nice review. BTW, did you get to hear Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys?

Lmao, insane. Sony crush it, the only negative point... The buffer speed and size. Overall best camera right now, by far.

Nice photos, no complains about your craft, etc. but somehow I expected better (noise wise) both from the a9 and the a7RIV. It is no accident those that do this for a living opt for the 400 f/2.8 halving the requisite ISO.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
I think the A9 performs as good as any camera out there.. with the exception of the A7S ii. its always a balance between megapxl and noise performance, which is why you see a drop off in the a7R iv

Omg those high Iso's are destroying your photos, the noise is terrible , you need to use at least 20 on the noise reduction.

This is the reality of shooting sports. You have to do what you have to do but that’s also why fast apertures are at a premium
@Paul_85-5 жыл бұрын
@@NickPage you could of used the sigma 150 - 600 and got far less noise .
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
Paul Scott actually if there would be far more noise! I would be giving up a stop of light because of the smaller maximum Aperture and thus shooting at even higher ISOs
@Paul_85-5 жыл бұрын
@@NickPage yes giving up a stop of light but you can easily recover in post , in my opinion.

Way to discredit his work. Plenty to learn about him, his channel, photography techniques, general entertainment... Etc regardless of what brand happens to be referenced.
