+One thing that almost no one knows about is that in the screen shown at 15:51, what you called "DSLR mode", is a live adjustment screen. That means any of the settings you see displayed on that screen can be used to adjust that setting. Just hit the 'Fn" button when that screen is displayed, and all of the icons become active. Just scroll to the setting icon, select it and adjust to what you want. This gives you almost instant access to just about any setting you will need during a shooting session. Once again eliminating the need to go to the menu. I don't know why more people don't know about this. -Steve-

Agreed. LENR as it is often described does affect the RAW file. I believe it takes a second 'dark frame' (ie no exposure) and can then determine any hot pixels and do 'dark frame subtraction' and present the RAW file without the hot pixels. If you can afford the time of the extra exposure, it is a must. Edit: I should probably have said 'Not to be confused with 'high iso noise reduction', which will affect jpegs / video. The two are different types of NR. [It's probable the LENR dark frame can remove some background amp noise as well ].

Nick -- I just got my Sony A7R IV and am really glad I found your video. I used to be a seventh-grade teacher so I know there IS such a thing as a dumb question, and I got one. How do you "assign" a setup to the 1 - 2 - 3 mode buttons on the mode dial? I am an Olympus user, and with my Olympus you just get everything the way you want it and there is a menu you go to to assign the current camera settings to a custom mode. One other thing I hope I can find on the Sony that I really like on the Olympus -- when you are in MF mode, there is a setting on the Olympus where as soon as you move the focus ring, it magnifies the image in your viewfinder by a factor of like 10 and gives you an indication of when you are exactly in focus. Thanks for all your useful suggestions!

Hey Nick, thanks for this video, so helpful. Two questions if you ever have a moment (or anyone else wants to answer): 1) compressed v uncompressed- I always used uncompressed on my a7Riii but having heard people say they don’t notice much difference & a bit scared of my new A7Riv file sizes, I’ve been shooting compressed on the Mark iv. Has anyone found discernible differences in the lossy compressed RAW files? 2) Every other person disagrees online as to whether LENR actually does or does not affect RAW files. A million different answers to this question. Have you or has anyone in the chat tested this theory? I’d certainly love to turn it off but... many thx again for the detailed and thorough video, Nick. I only discovered your channel recently but you are one of the few naturally excellent teachers here in KZbin land.

I personally have never tested either compressed versus uncompressed or the long exposure noise reduction theory’s. Most people seem to think that it does in fact affect The Raws... but I have always believed otherwise I think it’s time to do an official test and find out for sure. My contact at Sony says that they do affect raw files

As far as COLOR SPACE when shooting raw, yeah, go with the wider one. Why? It will give you a different JPEG and live view preview (slightly) and this could be important when saving highlight detail as the histogram and highlight warning will be more accurate in terms of what the preview is (assuming the picture style as well).

I would love to hear how file management and editing is impacted by 61 mega pickles! I had every intention of upgrading from my Rii this time round, but stopped when I saw the 61mp. Going from 24 mp where import, edit, and backup were painless, to 42 mp where things slowed down significantly on Lightroom and Photoshop even though my computers are only a few years old gave me pause. I expect things to get much worse with 61mp and to bump up against file size limits in Photoshop regularly. No one is talking much about their experience in this area. I am holding back to see if maybe there will be an a9ii with 36mp.
@nrocha24665 жыл бұрын
Maybe you need a faster computer,? I'm running a one year old core i7 PC with no issues... But I do run capture one pro 12. System is mid range, 16gb ddr4, 1tb nvme SSD, Nvidia GPU. No problems handing the uncompressed RAW. That said, when shooting wildlife I use compressed RAW in APSC mode at 26,mpx files and it's great... Buffer increases, and you get full EVF AF coverage with extra reach. So the 100400gm becomes a ,600mm equivalent at 26mpx!

Hello, Nick! A great video. My a7riv version displayed 25p (PAL) vs 24p by default in my video settings. I recommend that anyone in the USA, change the video format to NTSC to be ready for that occasional video while shooting landscapes.
@Matti69505 жыл бұрын
Yesterday i had an hour to test A7RIV. Learned a lot of stuff, one thing i wanted to try but didn't find, is to zoom in to 100% during liveview shooting (either screen or EVF doenst matter). On D810 with pretty crappy liveview, shaky, etc, i can with one button, instantly go 100%, press AF-on, see the sharpening,, and see if it's actually in focus, (try again if not, but usually is cause of liveview). This is big cause it gives 100% certainy a landscape type of shot is in focus, and you can fire away unless you move to much again (like on boat). Phase detect focus is hit and miss on dlsr. I found that AF-on button during image preview did the 100% zoom, but not the 'focus magnify' thingy. I really wanted to try this out, cause this is what i look most forward to on mirrorless. In fact if this doenst work properly could be dealbreaker for me. Do you know how to do this? And if so can you show it in video? I would greatly appreciate it. Atm it's one of the few uncertainties aobut A7R4 for me. One thing i absolutely love: the grip. For low weight lenses A7R2 and A7R3 were certainly good, but any big lens you instantly felt ergonomics lacking (compared to DSLR). But 85/135mm GMasters or 100-400mm (tested these also) are joy to use with improved grips, no pinky sliding! For this feature alone, i'm kinda not thinking about buying A7RIII anymore, cause ergonomics make camera so much fun to use. I bought a very good priced 24-70mm GM as headstart into Sony system. (1500 euro, pristine).
@youuuuuuuuuuutube5 жыл бұрын
Use DMF + enable focus peeking, so this does AF-S and then lets you manually adjust the focus for more precision (and zooms to 100%, again configurable), and you see exactly what is in focus, you can assign all this to a custom recall button that does AF-ON too.

@daran08155 жыл бұрын
Its fine if you: turn the cam to face down before removing a lens, keep caps on unused lenses, be quick when changing and avoid changing at dusty places. Also make sure you don't just blow dust into the camera body or you will keep hunting the same dust spot next week. Any dust in the back of a lens will transfer to the camera next time you use it, so keep those clean as well. I check for dust every time before packing the cam for a shoot but rarely find any.

thats tough, both are great cameras.. if it were me, I would think about the "system investment" the most, as I see the two camera's as pretty equal. Nikon is going to be focusing far more on mirrorless than their dslr's in the upcoming years, and if your going to invest in lenses for your system, you want them to be future proof. If it were me, I would go sony, for the simple fact that their current lenses are made for their future camers, Nikon is not.

Regarding uncompressed raw: have you ever compared real world results of compressed vs uncompressed raw? In my opinion, there is absolutely no difference. Only difference is file size which is less than half for compressed raw. Also it increases burst length as it uses less buffer memory. So I am very happy with compressed raw.

This camera along with all accessories costs a fortune! When will this megapixel war end???

Hopefully never. I pixel peep unabashedly and hope to one day have 70"+ prints of my best shots on my walls. It's truly remarkable what details we can see.

Ok, I’ll go watch 1st We Feast. Still with Canon

I never base my shots off the histogram. I base it upon how the image looks. You need to sometimes compromise between bringing down the highlights or upping the Shadows. You can do HDR of course but you need to carry a tripod. Basically I just turn the EV dial. Of course you need to watch your shutter speed.

In the age of Digital photography, you should ALWAYS base your exposure off your histogram rather than how the image appears on the back of the screen... exposing to the right is the only way to maximize image quality and the quality of the file. you are either going to have a noise penalty in higher dynamic range scenes, or a tonality/banding penalty in flat images where you add contrast. in the field we are collecting data, make sure you are collecting the best data possible.

Hi Nick Thanks for the video. It was a good help getting setup. I did just find this which indicates it may be better to leave the viewfinder refresh rate at Standard ... > (I think this is referring to Setup2, Page 2/7 - Display Quality - Standard or High) phillipreeve.net/blog/an-upgraders-guide-to-the-sony-a7riv/ In the Biggest Benefits section > The upgraded viewfinder is great....... Make sure you have the viewfinder refresh rate set on standard: the resolution drops at the high setting (the high setting is useful though - for example you might use it in a memory setting which uses high burst rates to follow action with autofocus. In this situation refresh rate would be more important than resolution). Thanks for good videos mate. I have not long found your channel. Ken

You don't appear to have anything set to quickly select Metering mode - I use the down arrow of the Control Wheel (which doesn't have a default setting, if I remember correctly.)
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
That’s because I always shoot in manual and I don’t even pay attention to metering modes

Nick, i cringed when you selected uncompressed on that 61MP beast, i was thinking, omg those files are gonna be massive.
@nrocha24665 жыл бұрын
A7RIV uncompressed is 120MB per file vs Nikon Z7 uncompressed at 100MB file. Not a huge difference.. and how many photos do you keep for each session? I might keep 2 or so out of say 50 shots. My one year old i7 PC has no issues with A7RIV RAW files in capture one pro

n rocha nikon z7 provides lossless compressed, which is what everyone uses.
@nrocha24665 жыл бұрын
@@SandipanBiswas and show me where these lossless compressed files are Superior in any way to what Sony has today? Let's see the RAW for comparison please. I've seen the lossless compressed files out of the Z7...they didn't impress me at all. So I chose the A7RIV over it .
@SandipanBiswas5 жыл бұрын
@@nrocha2466 "u have seen z7 files"...thats the basis of your claim? I use a A7R4 as my main camera and a z7 as my second body on a daily basis. Come up to Sony camera groups in fb and look me up by name.
@nrocha24665 жыл бұрын
@@SandipanBiswas I've downloaded plenty of Z7 RAW files. They are good, but in no way superior to the A7RIV. Matter of fact the A7RIV has more dynamic range at low AND high ISO. Don't believe it? Look up Jim Kassons blog, and his own testing. There is a 2/3rd stop advantage at ISO 100 with A7RIV over the Z7. Another big issue with the Z7 is the poor Auto focus. It's nowhere near what the A7RIV can do. I know,. I've used a Z7 recently with latest firmware. Nikon has a few years to go before they catch up, and by then Sony would still be ahead. Later

Nick Page People are so set in their ways. I see how confused some people get from simple menus in LR or PS. I guess some just don’t adapt. I’ve never had issues with things like that. Some do. We all think differently!! :-) I love that camera!

He gave incorrect information about NR and other things and wasn't very confident in what he was sharing. Stating that something is to his knowledge is not confident and a waist of my time. I had to double check his info with Sony. Sorry to be so blunt. I am very busy and my time is precious.
