Watching this game, the Bears would have clobbered Marino in the Super Bowl. 1. They sacked Marino three times in the first half, and he was on the run most of it. His quick release, and a third receiver, saved him. 2. The only flaw the Bears had all game was third and long. Dolphins running was meh, their short game was nonexistent, and they were very opportunistic. 3. By the second half, the Bears caused two turnovers in five minutes. Dolphins deserved this win, no questions asked, but this was a one time deal. Bears had a terrible backup QB who started during an unprecedented 107-3 streak in three games, and not only did he throw zero TDs in those games, but Ditka didn’t let him throw past five yards once they hit the opponent’s 30. Put McMahon in there and Bears win that game

37:57.....illustrates exactly what you're talking about. Tony Nathan took such a vicious initial hit by Mike Singletary, then another assisted hit by Wilbur Marshall to stop an apparent touchdown, that Marino had to come over to check to see if he was alright. This is one of my favorite broadcasts to rewatch, especially since it shows the ‘85 Bears D getting fleeced by a HOF at QB. Marino put on a masterclass on how to beat the 46. However, their D couldn’t stop New England in the AFC championship, so we will never know how Super Bowl XX could have gone with Marino vs the 46 round 2.

@Douglas Francis there's always one idiot to say something dumb or in this case, a few... you act like the man played with a great defense or a great running back... in a run first league, their offense was a straight passing attack and they had maybe one or two thousand yard rushers his whole career. The defense had a few pro bowlers late in his career, but by that time after dealing with the bills dynasty of four straight superbowls while being in the same division and the patriots were still a pretty good force to be reckoned with making a couple of superbowls during his prime while being in the same division... the one time he did have a dynamic defense, they went to the superbowl where they got beat by the 49ers in his second year, before players started retiring or being traded and you talking bout he's not clutch after seeing this one game where he beat the number one team defense that year who won the superbowl... and that happened with no pro bowl players on defense!!! If you don't go sit your hating *ss down somewhere!

The orange stripe down the pants leg, the aqua facemask and the giant orange stripe on the helmet along with the classic Dolphin logo. So much better than today's uniforms. They've gotten better, especially getting away from that Navy blue (Yuck!), but these uniforms are the best. It's no contest! BRING BACK THE CLASSIC LOGO!! Not that shark/whale looking logo!!! Those were the good ol' days, when I was a 15 year old kid and Marino was my hero. I watched this game with my (then & now) best friend, and I remember how excited I was during and after this game. My late father hated this game...LOL. He thought the Bears were going to CRUSH Miami! I was only 7 years old, but looking back, Miami was probably the ONLY team in the NFL that was even CAPABLE of beating the Bears in the Super Bowl. They had a quick-release QB, small but fast receivers that could get open, and a decent offensive line. They exposed the Bears' defense only weakness - their secondary. They seized the momentum early and the Bears couldn't recover. When Clayton caught that lucky ball late in the game, my dad yelled "GOT DAMN!!!!" :)

@jamieduncan63462 жыл бұрын
@Matthew Donnelly You obviously have no clue how good the 85 Bears defense was. That was BY FAR the most dominant defense in the Super Bowl Era. Taking a 49er team that put up 55 on a Bronco defense that was severely outmatched, over that Bears defense.....no chance. Montana would've gotten pummeled, and he was much smaller than Marino. He was very fragile. No chance the 89 49ers beats the 85 Bears. Zero

I was in Chicago in 1985. There was no regular season game - EVER - with more national excitement than this game. It was pure electricity before the game. Listen to the crowd at 5:00. One complaint - you can't compare Steve Fuller with Jim McMahon. It was not a fair fight, but hand it to the Dolphins - they took it to them. The Bears receivers couldn't catch, and they let the game get in their head. The Bears had never won an away game on Monday night, and the Dolphins made sure they wouldn't again.
@leoderosia92796 жыл бұрын
The bears were such a juggernaut in 85 that the Miami game was only one left on schedule that they could lose which I think created so much national interest, patriots fan. Back in 70s and 80s mia Definitely had a mystique esp at Orange bowl...NE did not win a game at the OB from 1968 to 1985. We finally broke thru in 1985 afc title game for biggest win in franchise history followed by biggest ass kicking 2 weeks later vs the bears
@pomerlain89247 жыл бұрын
Marino was one of the few QBs during that period that could really expose the Bears defense. He made quick decisions, had quick release, and had receivers that could make plays in man coverage. The 46, as good as it was, depended on getting pressure on the QB. If you can't apply pressure, the 46 can't work. Dan was able to consistently get the ball out before the pressure could get there, and he exposed the Bears' CBs who were on an island in man coverage. And if the pressure couldn't get to him, his passes were going to be for big gains. I can see why Mike Ditka tried to tell Buddy to implement a zone defense at halftime. Do the Dolphins beat the Bears again if they get to the SB? Who knows. But they would have given the Bears a much tougher fight than the Pats. And if the Pats could have rushed for over 200 yards against the Dolphins defense, Sweetness would not have had to worry about being iced out.

Despite the hype, the mid 80s Bears had a weakness on the back end, that was revealed by Miami and the 49ers the preceding playoff. Mid 70s Steelers D was the best because it also had a strong back end led by Mel Blount, that led to late 70s rules changes that gave us the passing rules we have now.

Good quality and I'm still glad that the Dolphins stopped the Bears on this night. I was cheering for them to win this back in the day because those 1972 Dolphins were awesome and deserve the undefeated record. That being said, most fans from then know this isn't the same Bears team with Fuller at QB that won the title in 1985. They were a lot better with McMahon playing. And the Patriots were crap, the Dolphins should've advanced for a Super Bowl rematch then it would've been a better game.

Patriots were NO match for the Bears,... Miami would have been a better game.... not saying they've would have won but it wouldn't been a blowout... Miami had Shula and Marino which is not a bad combo in a SB... there's another factor, Miami was in SB XIX and had been beaten by the San Francisco 49ers , so they were tested already....
