The funny thing about Shanny’s plan to get a TD first is Andy Reid said the chiefs would’ve gone for 2 to end the game, thus wiping out any third possession sudden death scenario. Chiefs would’ve gotten it too. It would’ve been hilarious.
@kyledavis6359 ай бұрын
That applies only in the case where Niners scored a TD first... If Niners didn't score, or scored a FG, what you describe is irrelevant.... And if both scored FGs or both didn't score at all, Niners would get the third possession, which would now be sudden death, i.e. first to score wins - a significant advantage. Anyone who thinks the Niners did the wrong thing by taking the ball first simply hasn't thought it through, and is likely using knee-jerk logic....

@davidhoekstra46209 ай бұрын
It's simple, if you kick-off, you don't have to guess when you get the ball. You know what the other team did, so you know what you have to do. You can make perfect decisions.
@stephenhanft12269 ай бұрын
With taking the ball first in Overtime, Shanahan made one of the worst coaching mistakes in Super Bowl history. His explanation fails in logic. He said that the strategy was to be able to go third. He expected for both teams to match each other with either 3 points or 7 points remaining tied and then they get the third possession under sudden death where the next team that scores wins. Here is the problem: The Chiefs were going to make sure that the outcome is already decided and the 49ers never see a third possession. If the 49ers settle for a field goal on their opening possession, the Chiefs are not settling for a field goal when they go second. If they are in 49ers territory, and in field goal range and it's 4th down, knowing Andy Reid, he's going for it (unless it's like 4th and 20). The Chiefs are thinking touchdown to win, not field goal to tie. So, trading 3's to get to a third possession is not happening. Also, if the 49ers score a touchdown and kick the extra point on their first possession, the Chiefs players have already said that they would've scored the touch down and gone for a 2-point-conversion to win it. If they convert, they win by 1. If they don't convert, they lose by 1. Either way, the 49ers are not going to see a third possession. The only way Shanahan and the 49ers could guarantee themselves of getting a third possession by taking the ball first was to go down and score a touchdown and making a 2-point-conversion. That way, the Chiefs can't win the game with going second. The best the Chiefs can do is tie the game with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion which would give Shanahan the 3rd possession now under sudden death where the next team that scores, wins. Well, we saw what happened. On 4th and 4 at the 9, Shanahan opted to kick the field goal instead of going for the touchdown and Mahomes then drove the ball down the field for the winning touchdown. Even if the 49ers score a touchdown on their first possession, knowing how conservative Shanahan is, they would've kicked the extra point instead of going for the 2-point- conversion with the Chiefs then knowing that a touchdown and 2-point conversion wins the game which is exactly what they planned to do. So, Kyle Shanahan's reasons for choosing to get the ball first was completely wrong and cost them the game in overtime. Also, the baseball analogy is correct. If you have the choice, you always want to have the last at bat. That way, you'll know what you need to either tie or win. Going first, there is always an uncertainty whether or not you scored enough. Going second, there is no such uncertainty.

I have thought about this really hard and there is no data to historical data to analyze. In this format, there is nothing more valuable than having the extra down by receiving 2nd. Doesn't matter if its Mahomes, or whoever. It doesn't matter about the sudden death, at the time of the start of OT. Every decision has their own tradeoffs and I think this decision is a little overblown. The Chiefs simply outplayed and beat the Niners.
@jeajea9 ай бұрын
thank you for shedding light on shanahan's faulty thinking. if you're taking the ball first, you HAVE to score a TD (possibly even go for 2) because that's the only way you don't lose the game. You have to assume team 2 will score a TD. The correct choice would have been to go 2nd and allow your 2nd year quarterback an extra down on each series as opposed to giving Mahomes the extra downs to play with

@justino44069 ай бұрын
I think where people are getting confused is that the logic doesn't follow through. If the plan is to take the ball first, because you want to ensure you have the 3rd possession, then you have to go for it on 4th down in the red zone and score the touchdown, then go for two. A TD +2 is the only way to ensure you get that opportunity of a 3rd possession. Taking the ball first is the aggressive approach but then you have to continue to be aggressive to make it work.
@glenndiorio89679 ай бұрын
@@justino4406 Partially true. Yes, score 8 (if you're sure) and the other team has to score 8 to give you the third possession. Then just kick for 3 and win. OR, you take ball, do a 3 and out, they get ball and do a 3 and out, you get ball and kick FG. Win! Same result. Of course, you take ball first, defense gets a TD, you lose. Or, take ball, kick FG, other team doesn't score...win. Same problem is there, nobody has a correct answer in this case becasue they're bashing the 49er desicion. If'a, could'a, should'a, would'a...it's all relevant.
@justino44069 ай бұрын
@@glenndiorio8967 I agree but the conversation isn’t about 100% because nothing is 100% in the NFL, it is talking about what gives your team the best chance to win. From everything I have seen/read, the only way taking the ball first gives your team the best chance to win, is if you score a TD (at the very least) but more preferred a TD +2 as that guarantees the possession advantage. If you take the football first, your mindset has to be TD or bust. Taking the ball and settling for 3 seems like one of the worst outcomes as now you give the other team 4 downs and also the “possession advantage” is now gone as team 2 can win the game outright simply with a TD. The numbers are constantly changing but the fact people are defending him taking the ball first (makes sense) but then settling for a FG (doesn’t make sense if the reason to take the ball is to have the “possession advantage” but you just gave that away).

@henrywc64949 ай бұрын
Problem is not receiving first, it was arrogant and delusional but there is a logic. The problem is he got scared and didn't trust his offense in the 4th and 4 and kicked the FG. I believe in this new format, if you choose to take the ball because you are facing Mahomes, you must score a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Unless you are really backed up like 4th and 7 plus, you don't kick it. That way, when Mahomes gets the ball and matches it, you can win sudden death on a field goal. On a side note, had that happened and Mahomes lost, the NFL would change the playoff overtime rules to more of an inning-like overtime.

Now I know that this is not always guaranteed, but it’s close.
