I played FS at a D1 school and I can tell you that fast backs are trouble. A 10th of second faster than anyone else on the field equals long run threat. This means the LBs have to play closer to the line to make sure they meet the player in the hole which opens up the back end between the hash marks for TEs and WR in-routes. It also causes the safeties to play up so they are unable to support CBs on deep routes outside the numbers and even the CBs have to be more aware of the run even in man-to-man which helps the WRs get open. The other bit is psychologically the last thing a DB wants to happen is to lose an angle on a tackle or get left behind in a foot race. We’re suppose to be fast and we didn’t want a scat back show the nation otherwise. I wasn’t very fast for a FS and this caused me to over pivot on the running game There’s a rationale behind the term ‘Speed Kills’
