The spin on the ball causes it to not only go through the air faster but as it naturally slowly down it slows down quicker as well. The follow through creates the spin but also guarantees that the ball has the most momentum and economical energy transfer without thinking about wind direction and resistance. But what creates more friction at the same time in the air? The spin. If you were standing in an insane gale what would create more friction on you? Standing still, running into the wind standing straight or spinning violently whilst running into the wind? So just like the backspin in basketball, the turning and it's interaction with the friction of air slows it down to a halt much faster than not spinning. A good spin on a basketball means that if it hits the rim softly it doesn't ricochet away violently. It's the same for being caught by the receiver.

It is easier to catch because if there was no spin, then when you touch it on one side it would be pushed away from your hand, and start rotate end over end which is much harder to catch. By spinning, any displacement to the ball your hands apply, is counteracted by the exact same thing after making half a rotation, so the faster it is spinning, the less the ball will wobble after hitting your hands.
