Everyone talks about how tough Parcells was, but you can also see a lot of quieter moments in which he used his sense of humor and passion for teaching to connect with guys. That conversation with Larry Allen was a master class in calmly setting a boundary with a respected veteran player. I’m sure he did the same thing with Lawrence Taylor a lot. He knew how to adapt his communication to different situations - he didn’t just yell and scream all the time.

1990 is the year I’ll always remember. The 49ers were an unstoppable machine that entire season, going 14-2 and cruising into the playoffs. Joe Montana had arguably his best season ever statistically and was the NFL MVP for the second consecutive season. After watching the Niners dispatch Washington 28-10 in the divisional round in a game that wasn’t even that close, I just thought this team was destined to three-peat. Then they ran into the only team that could stop them, Parcells’ Giants. They not only put a stop to the 49ers potential three-peat, but ended the Joe Montana Era in San Francisco.

We can agree to disagree, but I still think he’s the best coach of all time. Two Super Bowl wins with the Giants. A Super Bowl appearance with the Patriots. Took a 1-15 Jets team and got to an AFC Championship game. Then took a Cowboys team that went 5-11 for three straight years and got them back on track making the playoffs. No offense to Belichick. 6 Super Bowl wins is beyond impressive, but it was all done with one team. When you turn 4 losers into contenders and/or winners, I find that to be the greater accomplishment.
@jongordon79142 ай бұрын
That being said, that's what makes Don Shula the greatest coach of all time. Forget that he was the most wins in NFL history with the 10th highest winning percentage (higher than Belichick and way higher than Parcells), but he went to 2 different Superbowls with Earl Morrall as his QB and another with David Woodley. He took over a 3-10-1 Dolphins team with mostly the same players and went 10-4 and then two years later went undefeated to win a Superbowl
