It’s even more bizarre because he got actually hurt and tried to play through it in week 4 only for Steichen to call a designed QB run the very next play and Richardson couldn’t go after that. If the locker doesn’t respect him tapping himself out that’s fine and they have a right to be mad at that but they’ve seen Richardson put his body on the line before so it’s not like he thinks he has some kind of privilege or is above the law like that. It’s just weird timing and weird reasoning and makes me think it’s beyond how he has played and beyond even him subbing himself out for a breather

I’m real mixed on the benching for the season. On the one hand he needs more reps, he’s raw, he’s young, he barely played in college, and hasn’t even played the equivalent of a full season in the nfl. On the other hand, it seems that very basic fundamentals of quarterbacking don’t come naturally to him and might need time to sit and learn. I think that they shouldn’t bench him entirely. Garbage time in wins and losses is probably where he should be getting his reps for the rest of the season. They should also make him the permanent starter if it becomes clear that the colts won’t make the playoffs. If he does get traded for whatever reason, nfl teams better not let him land with an offensive guru. Not saying it’s the best fit, but if the a guy like Sean mccay lands him, very likely that they’ll take the time to sit down and really develop them over multiple years and he becomes the next baker, darnold or geno.

As a Texans fan and a fan of AR15 from the draft I can safely say that I never felt like we were ever in danger of losing that game with AR15 out on the field. I was also praying that Joe Flacco wouldn't come in to replace him because I knew we would be in for a tougher game if he did. Right now AR15 is a bum on that team and he it would be better for him(Screw what's good for the Colts.) to get traded to a better team that can give him a better shot at a future.
@Levi_music1Сағат бұрын
I think the Seahawks would be a strong candidate to acquire him if he’s available. They were very interested in him before the 2023 draft and Pete’s comments on him after the 2023 draft suggest he was heavily considered to be their pick at 5th overall had the Colts not taken him the pick prior. So John Schneider is already a fan of Richardson and Mike McDonald has previously came from the Ravens and saw how much of an impact Lamar has for your team so he would likely be interested in acquiring a player that has a similar ceiling, AND the risk of acquiring is somewhat insulated due to Geno being under contract for 2025. Seattle has all the precursors to acquiring him if he does become available

Ill be real I think your understating the difference between richardson and Flacco. The most basic form of analytics in football is thinking about the game as probabilities. Flacco feels like hey im gonna give you 5 yards 70% of the time. Richardson feels like i will give you 10 yards 40% of the time. If i need to go 60 yards im more likely to string one together with flacco and im certainly getting a lower floor with field goals.

Trevor's talking out of both sides of his mouth a little bit saying that AR didn't get a proper offseason, which is critical for a rookie's development, and then later saying that him getting a proper offseason this year doesn't matter and he'll just be the same QB again next season if he doesn't play. I think both statements are essentially guesses (which is fair, there's simply not a lot of data on how or why some QBs develop and other don't), but they're also nearly direct contradictions of each other. It seems like he has real mechanical issues that make his horizontal accuracy in particular extremely poor, and his absurd deep % and aDOT suggest he still has offensive understanding he needs to master (Steichen is not designing an offense to throw deep 25% of the time), so I actually do think a full season sitting and practicing with a full offseason to work on mechanics is significant.
@skane2602 сағат бұрын
steichen still isn’t designing an offense that has a lot of easy throws like screens
@JoshBoekeСағат бұрын
@@skane260 It's a chunk passing offense, that's true, but there are limits - AR is turning down easier throws to open guys to hold the ball and go deep, you can see it on film. Flacco also has a high deep % but his aDOT and expected comp% are far more reasonable in the exact same offense (Steichen has said the passing scheme with the two is identical). I get Flacco has 12,000 snaps and Richardson has 400, but he clearly needs to understand an NFL offense cannot live on 13+ aDOT where every pass damn near is 20-yards down field. People talk about his high drop rate, but that's because these are all low % throws down the field - his *expected* comp % is like 57, that's absurd. Colts run like 50 plays a game with AR cause it's all big plays or nothing.
@mandomerlie1997Сағат бұрын
I think all he was saying is that this year was supposed to be when he fixes everything and then in year 3 he can dominate. Benching him still pushes that back a year.
@JoshBoekeСағат бұрын
@@mandomerlie1997 I get it, but it's just inherently contradictory to say that missing his rookie offseason was a big blow to his development and then saying that having a full, healthy offseason that he could use to develop this year won't help him going into next year. I think the fundamental claim that a QB "has to play to get better" is actually not one with a ton of evidence, it's just sort of a conventional wisdom. You can assume a guy like Love would have been good right away, but it's entirely possible that sitting and learning for a couple years really did make a big difference in his development - no real reason to think it couldn't help AR other than that it's just not traditional.

Anthony Richardson is essentially a rookie qb. Last year he passed the eye test when you saw him play and you said yeah there’s something there. I’m sorry but soon as I saw he put on all that weight, regardless if it’s muscle or not I said he just looks off . Whatever spark you saw last year in those 3-4 games just wasn’t there since his very first start in pre-season this summer. Idk what the colts are thinking of, but the better tread carefully or they’ll be in same situation as the jets after their failed Zach Wilson experiment.
@danieldehoyos61745 минут бұрын
I don’t think benching him because of play is that crazy. From the outside perspective it is. You want development knowing this isn’t a Super Bowl year. From a coaching and teammate perspective, they’re there to win and they can make the playoffs, something that the veterans in this team have not done since 2018. I think they wanted Richardson to lead them to the playoffs KNOWING Flacco was the better option but the tap out situation forced them to make the change. As a coach I don’t know how you would look Buck, Big Q, Ryan Kelly, K Moore or Zaire and try to tell them this is a development year

Might be time for Richardson to start learning how to run routes. Don’t know how this works out for him at QB, when he just got benched for the rest of the season, and he still needs loads of development. And what team is going to be willing to play him to develop him?

I think tapping out was the stick that broke the camel's back, but i doubt that ARich time in Indy is done. They need to teach him a lesson on how to be a leader and that nothing is guaranteed to you in this league (unless it is Deshaun and his contract), you cant just take the play off at QB in NFL cause you "tired" Flacco will finish the season, probably lead Colts to wildcard and they give AR shot next year If he stinks, hes done. As time moves on it seems like Gannon was the reason that the 2022 Eagles made it to the superbowl obviously Siriani is garbage, and steichans gross mismanagement of AR is obvious. AR should be given this entire season to learn either by playing or behind Flacco but not mix them. AR gets to throw deep but thats the offense, if they wanted him to build a rhythm, they would throw screens and crossing routes to help him out.

excuse my rant about this for a lil bit: i'm irritated, because all of the factors that impact the development of rookie QBs. i'm sorry like...the entire process of developing QB's has completely short circuited league wide. lets just ignore the fact, i don't think this holds up for more than a game or two, or this benching should absolutely mean the end of chris ballard in indianapolis. i should not be at this point in my life, get off my lawn about QB's having a full season of starts in their career before getting a complete eval... regardless of how you feel about the prospects. i love AR, i personally believe he will very soon be the best player in this league. VERY SOON to be honest. i didn't love Bryce Young as much, i wouldn't have taken him 1st overall and such. i'm consistent though, benching both of them, when they have is equally wrong, and not how this is done properly and i don't care how much money gets put into the Quarterback position and how much all these guys get paid on the market markup, because the whole league negotiated a rookie wage scale to lower the cap numbers on these guys. there was a time, when barring blatant incompetence you needed 30 starts to have a fair grasp about what you have at the position. Josh allen had 2 straight seasons of mediocrity before he broke out effectively. we're crossing the line of human reason and decency now with the way were treated these athletes to the point that, if this is how it's gonna be done, drafting a QB high is NEVER going work, not once, if they handle it this way generally across the board. i don't care that they're worried about winning games, they have to manage the locker room as well, that matters just as much and this is terrible asset management to the highest levels. Not once recently in the last 3 years has it been the QB's fault, this is infuriating and embarrassing to me.

Football is the only sport where the better player doesn’t always start. In any other sport, you have to earn your spot. But in football, if you’re not ready right away, it doesn’t matter. If we drafted you high, you have get on the field immediately and GO FIGURE IT TF OUT. If you need time to develop, this league will give up on you and try to find your replacement the next year even if it’s just plain stupid and won’t yield any results. It’s just what you are “supposed to do”. I’m sick of all the made up rules of football management that NFL follows like it’s law. Anthony Richardson will only get better if Anthony Richardson gets better. We don’t fucking know what will happen. But we also don’t know if playing him will make him any better. TIME HAS ACTUALLY PROVEN THAT IT WONT We don’t know if sitting him will make him worse. Jordan Love proves that this method can be effective. Joe Flacco has just as many superbowls as Aaron Rodgers, Matt Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, who are all starters. Joe Flacco is the only quarterback in the entire NFL who won a superbowl as starter but isn’t starting. Drops mic. He’s not good enough right now, either he gets better or he’s a bust. But he’s 22. Anything can happen. They say that practice makes perfect but the truth is perfect practice makes perfect. So if he’s going out there and practicing bad rep after bad rep, how will he get better exactly?
