Elway is probably more well known for The Drive, but this is the day he absolutely carried his team to victory. There are at least four plays here that he turned from sure sacks and losses into huge gains or touchdowns.

His performance in '89 was incredible, as well. The fact is, whenever Denver won a game during the Dan Reeves era, Elway almost always made a handful of plays that were decisive. Plays you just don't see anywhere else.

BROWNS fan. This was an awesome game!!! Was in US Army and stationed in West Germany at the time. Had to stay up late in order to watch this game in 1987. Also remember staying up late for that double overtime win against the JETS and "The Drive" in 1986. Back then games were pre-recorded and sent to Germany for the troops to watch roughly a week later. Only LIVE games were playoffs and Super Bowl. Heartbreaker of a game for sure. UHG!!! Also, do not forget "The Interception" in the early 1980s against the RAIDERS when the BROWNS just needed to kick a field goal to win and advance to the next level, but they went for a touchdown instead and RAIDERS intercept and win the game. RAIDERS go on to win the Super Bowl against the EAGLES that year. Cleveland "destiny" I suppose. Elway was a BEAST in both these games against Cleveland.

Both men exceptional because of their determination to win. But throughout my years of watching their games against the Browns and then later the Chiefs and the Chargers, I always held the thought that Marty Schottenheimer would have won more Superbowls than any coach if it had not been for the fact that John Elway was on the other team. What a coach!

QANOMMON SENSE Marty’s teams that lost to Elway and Denver in the postseason were very, very, very unlikely to have won those Super Bowls. Look who they would have played against. Maybe they could have pulled it off and won 1 against Washington, but they sure as hell aren’t beating the 1989 49ers or 1986 Giants. The NFC was dominant during this period and always winning the Super Bowl, it was a surprise that Denver played as well as they did for one half against the Giants.

So unfair to label this game in a way that dinged Ernie. Wouldn't have even been competitive in this game without him, 160 yards of offense and 2 TDs. I guess the media people missed the fact the defense gave up 36 points (I won't blame the intentional safety by Denver on the defense). Also, if the fumble had not happened and the Browns scored, all that would have done is tied the game with a minute left. Given the defense's inability to little more than let Elway play catch with his receivers all day, it's my thought Denver would have taken the kickoff and been in field goal range in 4 plays

Only difference is John Elway actually earned his and didn't have to go to another team as a back up to get it.

It was quite a game. I slept on a sidewalk, in a mummy bag, in freezing temps to get tickets to that game. It was worth the effort. We were all quite nervous on that drive.

Byner had a pretty damn good game, right up until deep in the 4th quarter and deep in Bronco’s territory he was stripped of the ball! 🙄

Cleveland's fan base has paid their dues and then some over the years. The Cardiac Kids era, "The Drive", "The Fumble," always ending up a day late and a dollar short. Then Modell rips the heart out of the fan base by moving the team to Baltimore and just TWO YEARS LATER they win the Super Bowl. I'm not a part of their beleaguered fan base but for a long time I was thinking if/when they ever have a shot, I'm jumping aboard the train. Well, this year they've got a shot and I'm all in. Go Browns!!!

Sodaboy1996 it doesn’t rank up there among the big chokes. All it really would have done was tie the game and likely force OT, on the road, in a game in which they looked done when they were down 18 at the half. Cleveland’s losses to Oakland in 1980 and Denver the year before were more winnable games that they had in their hands. The biggest chokes would be Atlanta giving up a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl, or the Oilers blowing a 35-3 lead in the 1992 AFC Wild Card.

Maniac Masturbator Given that a TD gives Elway the ball with a minute and timeouts, I wouldn’t even say “likely force OT”.

@8:36….Cleveland DE # 78 Carl Hairston, who is sunk at the LDT position, runs a stunt to the outside shoulder of the RDE and the Broncos’ LT Dave Studdard, without missing a beat, shifts from the defensive lineman he was engaged with and picks Hairston up in a nearly seamless segue. Excellent blocking by Denver.

This game wasn't lost on Byner's fumble, it wuz lost becuz of poor azz tackling by the Browns. Denver's wrs broke a lotta arm tackling by Cleveland & defense line couldn't get to Elway.

Not a Browns fan, but felt bad for Byner at the end of this game. A true classic from the late 80's. I knew what was coming but had to watch it to the bitter end. Y'all need to make a video of all-time conference championship games rivalries for each conference. This and "The Drive" would be on there for the AFC for sure.

You know that everyone can talk about the fumble until eternity but fact is the Browns turned it over three other times and their defense was awful. Elway did whatever he wanted almost all day. It's a shame because Byner was the best player on the field that day apart from Elway.

Football is a team sport. Watch Webster Slaughter #84 during the fumble. He should have run a route to the back of the end zone and taken Jeremiah Castille with him, or blocked Castille. Either one would have eliminated the fumble.

Poor Bernie. Poor Byner. This was their moment and they rose to the occasion. Unfortunately, the defense did not. Actually, 1988 shoulda been the Browns year but QB injuries derailed the season. In spite of starting 4 different QB’s the Browns went 10-6 in 1988 and didn’t allow a TD pass until something like week 10 or 11. A healthy Kosar all season could’ve easily guided the Browns to face the NIners in the SB. Oh well. Still waiting on next year.

No, this is not the game. That game was in 1989. It was the 1989 Cleveland Browns at the 1989 Houston Oilers, played on Saturday night December 23, 1989 broadcast by ESPN. You can still watch the entire game right here on KZbin. Just put " Cleveland Browns vs Houston Oilers 1989 WK 16 " in the KZbin search bar. The game, as recorded on KZbin, is 3 hours 10 minutes 9 seconds long. Clay Matthews crazy lateral comes up at the 2 hour 37 minute 39 second mark.
