The thing to remember about the Refrigerator is, not only was he BIG, but he was QUICK and he hit the hole fast, with tremendous momentum. Also, that was back in the day when there were no "helmet-to-helmet" penalties. (12:50 He destroyed that Patriots player in the video clip.) If you were a defender and saw Perry coming at you full speed with his helmet lowered; 335 pounds of major appliance, I think most of us would find an excuse to be somewhere else. That's a serious business decision worth making. "Sorry coach, I was covering Emery Moorehead in the flat."

Thats because more then likely, they should've given Payton the ball to run it in for a TD in what would likely end up being his only Super Bowl appearance--and win, in his career. If Ditka says now that he didnt know or realize how much scoring a TD in SB XX meant to Walter, he's lying, or he's deluded himself into believing that fantasy for so long that he's partially begun to believe it. At the time, in the particular moment in the game, I don't think he really cared either way about Walter's feelings or how much he meant to the team, his overall contributions to tram ANF franchise over the past 10 seasons, it was a non-factor, for him. The only reason why Ditka has shifted or "evolved" his views on not making the decision was due to how beloved, likable of a man and player Payton was to the city of Chicago, his heart-breaking, well-publicized but inspirational decline and death that sort of made him seem like a complete jerk and a asshole to many Bears, NFL fans. I'm very skeptical whenever I hear Ditka proclaim he wouldve made a different decision if he could re-live the whole scenario over again, I don't believe him. I think he makes a similar decision today that he made back then. It's difficult to explain to many NFL fans these days, and particularly fans outside of Chicago and over age of 45-50 group just how arrogant, bloated and insufferable Ditka's ego was back in the mid-80's, and how it remained there long after that SB win and how it eventually became a divisive issue with his players later on by the late 80's. By 1989, Ditka had, by and large, lost a good deal of respect from the veterans and assistants in the locker room and didnt take him or his orders and tirades seriously anymore. Jim McMahon, OTOH, I suspect is being sincere when he says he would just ignored Ditka's play-calling, and call his own play near the end zone so late in the game with Chicago up so big, he and Walter had bonded especially well over the last 4 seasons and McMahon had a better, more sympathetic understanding of how much scoring a SB TD meant to Sweetness.
