With how rare it is for college success to translate to NFL success when it comes to head coaches, it's baffling how much teams go crazy over major college HC's becoming available.

Most of the big time college coaches were once assistants in the NFL and depending on who you know, it could provide value on the resume when they hire. Coaches rarely get hired without at least some NFL experience.
@Josh-go5lu8 ай бұрын
In all fairness, it's hard to win and sustain that success in the nfl no matter what your background is as a coach. So owners are picking from fired NFL coaches, young upshot coordinators, and successful college coaches. All have failed and few have succeeded. Really depends on the situation they walk into, their ability to teach and lead, and health.
@flibbidyx28 ай бұрын
The NFL and NCAA are very different worlds. The ones who can be successful at both levels are usually ones who understand the culture, strategies and talent gaps are much different at the pro level and are able to adjust accordingly.

It's interesting how collegiate coaches have mostly been failures in the NFL. They're so used to being treated like gods on campus and lording over their players to the point of near abuse at times. That's one good thing about the NIL/Transfer Portal process right now as the coaches have to compromise more and try to COACH rather than being feudal lords. I know you guys have listed Harbaugh and Carroll as collegiate coaches who've had success in the NFL but IMO Harbaugh was an NFL guy masquerading as a college coach as he's always had an NFL mentality it's one reason why for the last few years he's been doing a dance with NFL teams every offseason for the last few years. Pete Carroll falls under a different category to me as an NFL guy who went to college rather than a college guy who made it to the NFL. In fact, you could probably do a video of primarily NFL guys who tried their hand at college though I feel like that list is awfully small.

Its hard to coach in college but its really hard to coach in the NFL. Think some of it comes down to how much more complex the strategy is and the motivation of players. Its impossible to motivate professionals the way you motivate student athletes.

I’m curious by the comments who has the potential to become a NFL HC in today’s college era. Only one I think that has potential is Lincoln Riley because of how he nurtures QB talent at Oklahoma and USC with Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, and Caleb Williams. Even if USC does or doesn’t make the playoffs, if they can make the big ten title game or get at least a 10+ win season in the new B1G 10, he should get some coaching eyes next season. Kalen DeBoer has potential if he can rack up a couple good years at Alabama due to constantly changing programs wherever he coaches.
