Made by Film Australia 1973. Directed by Donald Crombie. In memory of the great Australian actor Bill Hunter. Hunter features as Major Tom Archer in this film about the dilemma of an army major who is considering resigning to take a job in private enterprise. Shows the action and planning of a military field exercise. Filmed by Dean Semler.

Interesting, post Vietnam through the 80s defence went no where and were underfunded, new doctrine of conventional warfare post Vietnam, and the pressure applied by the wives. Then there’s the stuff around by command.

This pretty much sums up the Army in 1973. Gough had gutted the ADF post Vietnam and people were leaving in droves. After being on overseas deployments almost continuously from 1945 to 1972, the Army entered a period where if you joined in 1973 there was a very real chance that you would never see any overseas service anywhere. This did not really change apart from a few small deployments until East Timor in 1999, that's 26 years of a peacetime Army.

Interesting that Hunter is putting on a Received Pronunciation in this, very different to his later voice. Was this how officers spoke at the time?
