I like your thinking ! The concept of the 'decoy' first came to me as a youngster, when I saw a TV movie called 'HIJACK' (1973) with David Janssen. Fun fact: although specifically targetting and filming one person can constitute harassment, in general, everyone in the UK has a right to just go into public spaces and film whatever and whomever they want. I happened to mention them to a colleague whose son, I think, was in the military. I was quite surprised when I was told what the convoys were. My surprise was not that they were transporting these, but that I'd never given it a thought before then. Plus I’ve had personal experiences on the government roads up in Scotland by Fassy Lane where a 3 truck convoy sped past me towards the base. 2 blacked out land rovers with who I think was either SAS or SBS in it, and a really long man truck and they were doing a solid 60 mph. Only ever saw this once, but I’ve seen other similar stuff before up there too.

I was always impressed by a throwaway bit of dialogue in an old (1989) episode of Doctor Who, the story being 'Battlefield'. A convoy is seen driving down a road, and The Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) mentions casually that it is a nuclear convoy. When asked by his companion, Ace (Sophie Aldred), how he knows this, he replies disgustedly: "It has a graveyard stench."

@ianardo127 It depends on the population density of the city and whether the weapon was an air burst or ground burst, air burst giving a higher mortality rate. A Trident war head will burn people out to 8 kilometres then you'd have secondary effects of radiation in the medium to long term. Given that Trident is 8 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb and if detonated over St Petersburg, would immediately incinerate over 600,000 people, it's entirely feasible that millions would die although not in the immediate period.
@Ian-xq4rt7 ай бұрын
This is such a cheerful conversation. Do remember that the Trident missile carries 5 independent warheads, each warhead is the equivalent to eight times Hiroshima. So Trident is 40x Hiroshima in reality, let’s just agree it’s deadly!

Nuclear weapons would be moved in a far less obvious convoy with very discrete " protection" not advertised in a military truck!
@OfficialSamuelC6 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. They won't take any risks that somehow the convoy is leaked internally and thus they are vulnerable. Nuclear weapons have been transported like this many times, and hence why the over the top protection. Those MoD police vans and other vehicles contained dozens and dozens of highly trained armed military personnel ready to deploy at a moments notice if anyone attempts to attack the nuclear trucks. Those trucks are also the ones kitted out to withstand bombs, RPGs and so on. Sometimes they are discreetly moved but it will depend on the size or type of nuclear weapon and quantity. A more valuable or larger quantity of nuclear weapons will always have a very distinctive convoy and protection as a clear deterrent. Discreet convoys are also not that discreet, it is very obviously still a convoy and a convoy that has escorts, blue lights and sirens as they cannot afford to be stopping at any moment, not even for traffic lights. They are all still bullet and explosion proof. All nuclear weapon transports discreet or not have ridiculous amount of armed personnel following and this requires a lot of large vehicles. As well as a recovery vehicle, and fire engine for any eventuality. Not to mention communications and often signal jammers. No nuclear transport ever goes without all of that, smallest nuclear weapon or not. They will never risk a discreet transport being intercepted by assuming because its secret and discreet that nothing can go wrong. Not a chance when it comes to nuclear weapons. But yes, less 'valuable' (or yield) and the odd one or two small nuclear weapons being transported can be done 'discreetly' but there is still not much discreet about it. It just isn't as obvious as this convoy or require as much personnel.

A kilometre around that convoy is probably in the top ten safest places to exist in the UK. If that truck was carrying a nuclear bomb, even if you dropped another nuclear bomb on it, the first one in the truck wouldn't even detonate.
