A UK Nuclear Weapons' Convoy coming down the A817 onto the A814, just up from HMNB Clyde, en route to RNAD Coulport at the other side of the Rosneath Peninsula, in Argyll & Bute, Scotland - with material brought from AWE Burghfield, Berkshire, England - on the afternoon of 17th May, 2023. This Convoy was very spread out - and was unusually preceeded by a marked RAF breakdown vehicle in operation (not shown on the video). This was later confirmed to be carrying an unmarked police vehicle. The Convoy is usually preceeded by a police vehicle, not a breakdown truck. The two breakdown trucks usually come down together with the 2 relief crew coasches at the very end (often after police have opened the roundabout again to other traffic; and they have moved on In this instance they were also spread out, and the second breakdown truck came along some time afterwards). got caught in the middle of one of these some years ago.... Just past the Dunglas Roundabout on A82 at Milton they were in the inside lane of the dual carriageway & I was in the outside passing them when suddenly they signalled right & moved out en-mass & I was in the middle of them. Police m/c outriders stopped the traffic at the Milton lights & we were waived straight through... ditto Garshake rd lights, ditto Barloan rd about. They pulled into the inside on the bypass & I finished passing them. Quite fun. Surprised I wasn't huckled.

Best driving of the lot, not pick up all the debris that accumulate (nails screws etc) in the unused area of the road. I'm a bit surprised they did it that way for the convoy, a bit less speed in what is quite a secure area, and reduce the risk by using the "clean" road. I'd rather not have an extra 15 minutes with the scrutineers wanting to see every inch of the tyres thank you (ADR / explosive - not nuclear driving past).

The risk of someone who might actually have an interest and capacity to do something about it, knowing some HGV that looked like it was going to Tesco had a nuclear warhead on the back instead of your weekly shop is the stuff of cheap B-movies. Thankfully we move our warheads professionally with some serious protection, by people who know what they are doing, and not someone who plucks ideas from the clouds

This is amazing , such a fascinating puzzle to ponder what was in each vehicle. At first I was amazed at the quantity of police personnel transporters thinking crikey, that is a lot of people. But then two full sized coaches came along! What exactly is all this manpower for? I assume the police transporters contain armed police to protect the convoy. What is in these trucks exactly ? Nuclear weapons? What people are in these two coaches, what is their role?

Trident delivery vehicles are usually crated and shipped to the US straight from the dock on Loch Long without fanfare. Or if one of the bombers is on training they'll sail to the Trident facility in Georgia with the empty missiles onboard to swap them out. The only time the warheads leave the shores of the UK is on patrol.
@raylp4751
@raylp4751 Жыл бұрын
@@c00sto I'm being sarcastic. At Coulport they store Trident missiles and warheads. These are now loaded into the Submarine via the closed Dock. No need to put 16 tubes onto boat with no knowledge how many actual missiles are loaded as in Polaris days. If going to States to test fire I don't know if they sail with a blank onboard or if there's a Royal Navy missile in the states to pick up. We sailed with missile loaded at Coulport to fire at Cape Canaveral. No idea what Georgia has in relation to runs ashore. But we had 2 weeks leave whilst in Florida.

I think it makes a lot of sense for a convoy to split onto parallel nearby roads where possible as if all the vehicles were on a straight line they could be stopped by a block on that road. Splitting the convoy means that even if the front vehicles are stopped the ones from the rear can loop around and confront the block.

"Normal lorries"? If you count the number of close-coupled axles on the tractor and trailer you may deduce that those vehicles were designed to carry something heavy. I remember seeing such convoys in the 1980's cutting between the M.4 and the M.1. At that time the lorries were rigid but with more axles than normal. The Bank Of England used to use similar vehicles before Gordon Brown sold all the country's gold for a song.

Ambush and theft of a nuclear weapon would be my biggest concern if in charge of this so called convoy. Ok, they probably wouldn't be able to detonate the thing but a lot of nasty and useful elements such as U238/239 Plutonium, Tritium, Deuterium as well as conventional explosives. I hope they are transported in parts so no one convoy has enough parts to assemble a working bomb. This is one case i agree that roads should be closed to traffic and people with armed military at every stage. Also those truck were going too fast on that bend for my comfort.

They will be fully loaded heading towards coulport. The large blue police vehicles are Civil Nuclear Police, these officers are heavily armed and always have full firearms authority. I think we should get rid of them. Let the Americans base subs at faslane if they want. Just makes us a nuclear target, don’t think our missles would make a decisive difference either way. Obviously we need a deterrent but I think the American land based icbms do a better job than our trident subs.

No, Trident is not a less capable system than minuteman. It's far more survivable. Britain is a nuclear target whether or not we have weapons. In the event of a limited war, it makes us less likely to be a target, as proven by the seven days to the river rhine exercise.

@@user-qf7dl2ki4t I think you've misread something there. Our subs make us a target AND are a waste of money. If the yanks put subs there it solves the cost problem. We should scrap our subs asap. Even better if they have no subs there at all.

Where I use to live we had Bull finches, a fairly small bright red fronted bird bigger then a robin. They use to breed locally and come to feed on my feeder. After fledging 4 chicks the family of 6 would come feed with the noisy chicks. Week later there where 5, week later there where 4, finally there where 3 and the chick had learned to be silent. We also have a local sparrowhawk. Does this relate to distinctive convoys? Possibly.
