While other professional organisations such as the South Africa Medical Association and Hospital Association of South Africa have expressed their disagreement with the passing of the National Health Insurance Bill, the Health and Allied Workers Indaba Trade Union says it welcomes the signing of the NHI Bill.
The organisation says South Africa spends 41.8% of total health expenditures on only 17% of the population on private voluntary health insurance, who are mostly high-income citizens who can afford to purchase private insurance.
HAITU says this is more than any Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development country.
The health workers' organisation is also calling for the state to totally ban private healthcare in SA.
HAITU General Secretary Lerato Mthunzi joins us virtually to discuss this.

These people are naive. If you bring the entire sector to the control of the governing party, you collapse the entire sector. Plus the lady says she uses the public health sector because she is a health care worker. She gets better care than others still because she is taken care of by her colleagues

Get real, the only people affected by the NHI is the ones on private health care which is the minority. The majority is already on state health care. People are no so naïve to believe that they will be affected worse. It by time the minority is honest about who are the ones who stand to lose.

As someone who is very receptive to arguments for NHI I found this particular argument to be very flawed. Assuming that merely forcing the better off in society to use public health care will magically make it better flies in the face of recent experience. For instance, we are all customers of Eskom, that hasn’t spared us from loadshedding. Even our biggest corporates don’t get a functioning freight and port system, never mind the destruction of passenger rail.

The NHI bill will not get rid off private health care, it will give everyone access to both private and public health care through a universal medical insurance scheme.

@@sphemakh I understand that. The guest in the interview is arguing that that shouldn’t be the case. She is saying NHI doesn’t go far enough. She believes the bill should abolish private healthcare because that will force the state to provide better healthcare for the citizens who currently cannot afford private healthcare and insurance. This is is the logic I am disagreeing with.

I am a registered nurse, worked in both private and goverment hospital, having a Bcom and MDP degree. Private hospitals at the moment are empty. The masses have been pushed in inhumane hospitals. In private you nurse 6 patients with claims huge to both Drs and the private hospitals. Goverment nurses are given 200 pts a day. Service delivery is paramount if this NHI need to see the light of day.

@tman2431 and therein lies a greater problem as private hospitals and doctors in private practice won't be able to cope with the additional workload from citizens and non citizens and more importantly, not be timeously paid for the exceedingly high standard of services these professionals render. Note ... the ANC administration can hardly manage basic small municipalities etc so they have no chance of managing a 1st world health care scheme. SADLY ... the developed nations with all their wealth are struggling to maintain their national health schemes so South Africa, being governed by a corrupt 3rd world inept government has zero chance of succeeding with the NHI. More tragic is that they lack the intellect to fully understand all of this.

There's no corruption in a functional hospital. The goverment creates chaos and dysfunctional entities to get tenders to repair them and steel the funds. If the government stop the subsidy of its employers they will then lose the contribution of these members. So it's a win win lose lose situation. Private companies will just stop paying their contributions for their employees. No one will pau for medical again because these contbutions of their employers help them everyone that works contribute which is only almost 55 percent of the 60 million people. A disaster it will be. Doctors are already threatening that they'll leave the country if this bill goes through. So with the few doctors that decide to stay will they have to help all the people,and if the government sector service is this poor now people having to wait months to get consultation or for surgery then lots of people will lose they lives. Imagine having to go to a hospital with only 5 doctors and 1000 patients. People will sleep in front of the gates for 3 or more days to see a doctor. I really need more clearity on this Bill, cause theres too many unanswered Questions. I read this morning on IOL that that's if this NHI bill goes through allegedly and will "spell the end of private Healthcare for 9 million medical scheme members." Imagine how many people will lose their jobs etc

Do u know how much their contribution is towards the tax, the normal taxpayers are not even paying one percent of what they paying, now imagine they leaving and more is yet to come. Where is the money gona come from if nhi and basic income grant is materialized. Why would any millionaires stay in a country where they can't get the best medical care, even if they decide to stay they will go seek medical care in other countries. The few taxpayers that's left can't foot all these bills, and people can't seem to understand that.

I think one question missed was: - You are upset about some people paying for private healthcare. Who's money are they using? - If the money they are using is theirs, and THEY worked for it, and THEY are free to do with their money as THEY like... why does the ANC feel entitled to take that money away? - What rational justification is there for taking a taxpayer's money?
@jeandutoit1413
@jeandutoit1413 7 ай бұрын
The rationale is the ANC's so-called concern for the people of South Africa. The real reason for the implementation of the NHI bill is to create a new source of income for government officials to loot. Taxation is, has been and always will be, theft.

If our Govt hospitals were actually functioning properly this would not be an issue. This, will not work I think many people have expieenced this and, at the end, of the day the one, that cannot afford treatment and medical aids are the people who really suffer and at the end of the day they still suffer the most. You missing the point...and I don't think you have read the NHI bill..let me help you. It says we should all use the same healcare...it does not say we should all use government health..So In short it means I should have the rights you walk in any hospital be it private or public.

Where does she live, in the township or so called suburbs I hope she stays in a township, talking so proudly about using public health facilities And if she has children, then I hope she has her children attending a school in the township and not in a private school or the then model C schools And there's nothing wrong with it, but she talks with such pride

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY Letato believes the words that are coming out of her mouth. She knows NHI is impractical for this Country. Noone chooses which roads to drive on. But the roads are in a horrible state. Health Care wont be any different.
