The dude sat out half a season. He also took a contract with Anaheim for the same amount of years, but less money. He was a great player, but he's not a Redwing's ambassador. And those are the type of people that should have their numbers retired.

2nd greatest player of all time, greatest 2-way player of all time. Yea, I know, he didn't put up top 10 points or anything like that, but he would have had he not developed his defensive game as well. No one else in the history of the game had as complete of a game as Federov. Only player in history to win the Hart and Selke in the same year, and the Hardest Shot and Fastest Skater in the same year.

2nd ok, to each his own but i would go the 3rd best Russian born forward and thats putting bure 4th and OV and dats 1 and 2 now being from Detroit and being in my 40s he is my 2nd favorite Russian to play here behind Vladi who i do believe would have been argued to be best defenseman ever had his career not got cut short, and id say stevie (u did say ever) was the best 2 way player especially when i remember something about feds departure involving him not wanting to play the point on the power play
@marthahanley66505 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. But Red Wings fans can tell you that because he was so skilled at the defensive aspect, Scotty Bowman actually put him on defense when there was an injury. I think it was that but now I'm curious to go back and look it up. Perhaps a strategy move of being much more of a floater back there. The life stories of the Russian Five is heart breaking and most of them could have had a *longer* career if not they were playing for the Red Army. Listen to the back history of Federov. These kids spent *hours* a day outdoors playing hockey (outdoor rinks). He remarked when young how *heavy* his skates were; but this helped build up power in them. He also grew up in Murmask where it was more bitterly cold and the only thing is that he loved hockey and moving around kept him warmer. P.S. Did you see his 5 goals in one game? He got all 5 goals the Wings scored. And the 5th was to win in OT.

My absolute favorite as a kid growing up in Detroit in the 90's. Then we had Datsyuk... I KKOW how blessed we have been to watch these players. Poetry in motion. And they are absolutely right, it did just seem like he decided to take over at will. Amazing.

It was late June, summer of 98. Some friends of mine and I decided one evening to go to the old Post bar in Royal Oak, or Berkeley or whichever Detroit suburb it was in ( I don't think its there anymore). While we were there, about a half-dozen Red Wings showed up with the Cup they had just recently won against Washington. Most of the rest of the night was a blur of excitement and an abundance of booze. I do remember taking a sip from the Cup, will never forget that, and Sergei showing up about an hour after the others had got there. Sergei was all smiles and welcoming to anyone that approached him, I shook his hand and congratulated him on the Cup win. He thanked me for the kind words and support. Other than that, about all I remember concerning Sergei was that he left shortly after with two women under each arm. :) The man certainly enjoyed his female companionship it would seem.

There's a great documentary about the Russian ice hockey team on Netflix Shows what an incredible team they had in the late 70's early 80's Fedorov probably at his absolute best then but still good enough in 1989 to get to the NHL and have a long career It's a fascinating insight into the creation of their fantastically intricate and beautiful play
@paulelliott32207 жыл бұрын
It's called 'Red Army' and charts the progress of Soviet ice hockey though the 70's and 80's talking to ex players and coaches, along with vintage footage from the time. It's fascinating and good luck finding it on Netflix. Approx 90 mins or so but a very interesting watch. Let me know what you think.

"When he decided it was time to play". Oww thats kind of a burn! I think Drapes meant when 'he decided he WANTED to play' lol. And I guess that was the case. As good as his career was I think he underachieved. He was so dominant theres no reason he shouldn't have been putting up Mario Lemieux numbers every year. If I closed my eyes and created the perfect #1 C, it would look exactly like Federov. He was perfect down to the tee.

This guy actually have a shit maybe 10 games per season, yet that was enough to perpetually score 30 goals/50 assists. Imagine if he played all in for a season (like he did that ONE time in 1994)? He would have gotten 100- plus points (and the selke) every year
@gammal5864 жыл бұрын

@brando4422 Жыл бұрын
@@Terminator6364 13 yrs. Is plenty along with 3 cups awards with the team. If that's not enough I don't know what is. Most players even the greats like Gretzky any many others leave at end of career. He was as important as anyone those dominant years and made more people a fan and interested than any.
@Terminator6364 Жыл бұрын
@@brando4422 It's just that I think Zetterberg or Datsyuk shouldn't be there either. In 100 years max 3-4 players should be awarded this honour. Zetterberg during his Red Wings career scored 6th most points in the league, Datsyuk 8th, Federov had 12 guys ahead of him. Imagine in 100 years when all top 15 players of each generation will have their numbers retired? I understand Lidstrom, top 3 defender of all time with 20 seasons or MR. Red Wings Steve Yzerman with 1500 matches.
@brando4422 Жыл бұрын
@@Terminator6364 I feel teams should honor the greats of those team's. Guys like Gretzky and Howe should be league numbers retired while I wished team's did like the Yankees and retired numbers of the greats over the year's. Always thought is was cool how they immortalized a few legends of baseball or just legends of the Yankees. I think it would make the group more immortalized if guys like Brendan and Federov were up in the rafters with the other two who made that monster of a team. At the end of the day if the name is remembered that's more of a big deal since you left a mark on Hockey fans memories. Detroit fans were spoiled with that talent that team had. I'm a hawk's fan and they had a great run in this new era and the talent they had still feels miniscule to Detroit's rosters in late 90s early 00s. I think down the road they will be in the rafters when decades go buy and people realize assembling guys like that for that long is a one off and if you're lucky as an organization maybe twice.
