The band-aiding comment might be the biggest takeaway from this video. Just look at the pressure system, instead of fixing how pressure was gained (good shot, bad shots, normal passes, sauce passes, one touch passes) they just change the amount you need. then eventually nerfed full pressure so bad, that it's not even a mechanic anymore. Agreed. They've had 30+ years to figure this game out. Their response is to just patch things the community exploits instead of trying to make a proper game. It's pathetic. Case & Point...you can't edit your lines within a game, and backup goalies serve zero purpose. I know i know, synergies is what the EA community manager said. I said "really? that's what you want from your game?" i'm so sick and tired of this corporation. I went to EA Vancouver last year, was hoping to talk to devs about the game. turned out it was just a play test and wasn't an open discussion. They literally have zero money from me the last 2 years, though i've played for free as i love hockey. But this corp does nothing to earn our money. it's just a non-stop effort to suck us dry

Last GOOD NHL was 20 or 21...I can't really remember which. But during pandemic it was playable.. NHL 22, 23 AND 24 ARE UNPLAYABLE GAMES. I RETURNED 24...FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I RETURNED AN NHL GAME.

I made a post on the EA NHL forum about bad defensive AI being the cause of most of the game's problems, and the community manager responded and told me to learn how to manually defend and stop expecting the AI to do it for me... This let me know that not a single person at that company knows anything about hockey. I can't control all 5 skaters at once, and one lapse by the AI just abandoning his man for no reason causes a complete breakdown of the defense. THIS is what leads people to play defense like a constant penalty kill (see also. skill zone). But like you said, rather than address the root of the issue, they bandaid it another way: make offense clunkier because otherwise the braindead defensive AI would look even worse. Now you've got crap offense and crap defense...and thus, a crap game.

I was watching some clips from NHL 19 the other day (imo the best of the PS4 era NHL games) and was blown away by how good it felt. Yea the back skating was unrealistic, but it created a skill gap and it was fine because you had the defensive tools to combat it. Keep a close gap, wait for them to face you, and then stick lift them. Now you can't even stick lift or poke check. Imo bring back the back skating cheese, and just lower the puck control and balance of players when they do it. Make them easier to knock off the puck when they back skate and the problem fixes itself. I agree with what you said about the band-aids. This applies to "skill zone" defense as well, or players just standing in front of the net instead of actively defending. If you just make a higher variety of snipes and one timers from more areas viable scoring chances, all of a sudden players will start actively defending. Instead they tried this stupid fatigue system that failed so miserably they scrapped it almost entirely. Their solutions are always just so bad it blows my mind.

Great list but the problem is this. Product team compiles customer feedback like this, determines the cost / time it would take to implement, bring the project to the board to get approved, but immediately get denied and respond with "The only net new features that we will approve for the game are features that have a mechanism to generate a revenue stream, other than that, it's keep the lights on". Team goes back to the drawing board, realize HUT is the only thing that keeps revenue flowing, and the next proposal consists of events that will make the game miserable for the FTP player (IE, Trade Deadline). To slap a feature tag on it, they will change the color scheme of the menus or add some minor graphics in the arena. The fact that "Be A Pro" was the exact same thing from the opening scene, and amazingly the dialogue engine was broken and worse then 23 is sort of the writing on the wall. It's a slap in the face when your release another iteration of the game with modes that are worse of then the previous year. That shows that they really don't care about the customer experience and they have a very lazy development and QA team who are just going through the motions.

The game should be COMPLETELY overhauled. As long as what's there is enough for you to buy it, there's no reason to incur any cost to improve it.

The recent EA NHL games can best be described as feeling like "arcade hockey", flashy abilities, cool looking dekes and saves, and massive hits. But the lack of strategy and fundamental hockey is annoying. AI is either too aggressive or too passive, it has no consistency.

I couldn't agree more with the ridiculous band-aiding issue. L2 spam, poke checks. I'll throw in the lacrosse goal as well. Spent so much time learning how to hit it. Then, 24, they make it a button press. Now it's OP asf so they nerf the hell out of it so it's slow and unrealistic. Awesome! Now it's pointless to go for whether you use skill stick or toddler control. Great job!

I like what u said about goalies. It’s very inconsistent but that is how it is like in real life. Players have really good games and really bad games. I do think there needs to be a mechanic where the goalies and AIs adjust to things. Basically like what u said about the goalies adjusting to how they’re being scored on. I think that’s a fantastic idea and it would mean there would be a variety of different goals being scored bc u can’t just keep on scoring the same thing over and over and over again.

I play Eashl exclusively. I would love to see more “pro” and less arcade. The games don’t need to be 7-5 every time. Human goalies need to be more fluid-it’s like moving a bus compared to skaters. Even if we need two different Eashl modes, such as Pro and Arcade, and each has their own tuner depending on the experience wanted, I know of many league players that would love a realistic hockey game. Getting rid of L2 was a great start-now let’s remove unrealistic hits, fumbling goalies, and skaters that never lose the puck even though they’ve been hit several times. Get rid of X Factors and Silver Perks for Eashl-the game is so much better when we remove them from skaters during league games. Great video.

Great video! Unfortunately I don't see EA making big changes anytime soon. I'd like to add, in EASHL Human goalies, all goalies really, passes and loose pucks going towards the goalie should be automatic saves. I swear almost every game you can pass it in or the defenseman will put it in their own net. Gotta eliminate those kind of goals. Overall you hit most points I've been talking about. It's frustrating when a new NHL game comes out and the AI somehow becomes worse. I stepped away from HUT and Versus because the AI is atrocious which a simple feature you mentioned is let us be able to customize AI. When I'm skating with the puck at a certain spot I want my AI to go where I want them to go. Not watch them skate sideways away from a dangerous area. I used to be a top player on the xbox side when online first started and as the years went by I just couldn't handle how worse AI got. I really don't understand how you keep playing but clearly you adapt to how the game needs to be played while I refuse to play like that. With all that being said, I really hope EA SPORTS NHL team watches this video and understands the changes they need to focus on.

I agree, bring back the backskating, but give the players less balance, agility, and strength when performing it so it is not game breaking. It was a great tool in previous NHLs that allowed you to perform a delay when entering the zone, control the puck near the boards/ blue line and protect the puck (A + LT mechanic). But they removed it because recreational players who have never watched a damn game of hockey in their lives didn't know how to deal with it and labeled it as unrealistic.

My favourite animation is when you shoot the goal, and during the celebration the scorer gets literally bent out of shape, like a contortionist to the 999th power. Also: I've gotten a few one-timers from the distance done, but either you need to be very lucky, or you need a deflection. I still need to learn crease to crease like you showed.

A few small things in HUT: Stats should be locked to a player, not a card. If I switch my McDavid from tradeable base to untradeable base to TOTW, to x factor to TOTY.. his stats should stay and not be reset each switch. I actually like HUT Rush, it's a fun simple way to get cards.. but there should be NO animations or replays in it! It should be rushed, score and reset. Daily challenges should be removed and we should get multi staged weekly. So if you can't play for 2h per day but can play for 14 one day a week you should not miss out on rewards. Daily makes it feel to much like a chore. For franchise mode I just want some stuff back from the olden days.. Give me the opportunity to train my players and chose what they need to improve on! This makes it so the staff also includes trainers. A decade ago I could put a player to work on his skating and during the season and offseason that's what he's doing. Give me back the option to chose my players style of play. Since the drafting position fools us way to often despite having A+ scouts it's needed to change them. Be a pro: As long as we don't have an actual story mode for be a pro I do not care, scrap it until you work out a good story mode.

My recollection starts and ends between NHL 96-2004. Compu scoring vs my 100/100 teams was fascinating. Usally when the CPU opponent have had no shots at all and I was ahead like 40-0 you started to see fourth liners skate unstoppable (no matter who or how hard you hit them with) become completely unstoppable. You hit them all you want but they'd skate roughly just past the blue line and make a "humongous shoot" (one which a demented sloth with severe brain injury would stop by just standing there) and in it goes. No matter if Martin Brodeur was you goalie or late years DiPietro. It would go in. Somehow. Goalie became transparent. That "keeping the AI in the game" was laughable and games could end 50-8 due to that even the AI was forechecked out of all posession through the game. Sounds EA still has this feat. XD These nobody fom nowhere literally became Forsberg or Fedorov on godmode. No way getting puck off their stick dirty or clean just flopping the puck to net from almost neurtal zone. :P I usually spent the rest of the game making sure their IR was full of top line players by hitting them (as well as goalies) as dirty as ever possible (I think there was max tree injuries for CPU team but it looked brutal)... Also Stupid AI players made it so that it was easier to score on shorthanded than on 5-5 or powerplay. XD Maybe these days you can use real money to make your goalie play a shotout game. :P

Simple AI improvements - if I'm skating at a teammate, the teammate gets out of the way instead of trying to cock-block me, if I'm on a 2 on 1, my teammate goes to the net hard, he doesn't slow up and stop at the blue line or veer off to the side to check out a chick in the front row. Goalies are either impossible to score on in some situations or too easy to score on in others, bring that to somewhere in between, I know obviously some shots are way easier to save than others, but take the outside one-timers for example, they never go in, that's lame. Get rid of the pressure system, pressure in the zones comes naturally, better players know how to deal with it, you don't need an artificial mechanic to simulate pressure. Get rid of the breaking glass, it almost never happens irl and in the game it gets old after the first time, but I'm sure if they do remove it, EA will tout it as a NEW FEATURE! Stick checking, yes it was overpowered once but now players sticks are ghost like unless you want to work on your penalty kill - let player sticks intercept passes and knock pucks away sometimes, the computer-controlled players have yoda level sticks that hit the puck from 20 feet away and force choke your grandma for good measure. And when you do separate an opponent from the puck, don't have the puck magnetically go to one of their teammates every, single, time. Let the player win puck battles along the boards every once in a while, instead of losing every battle even if you have 3 players vs 1 AI player. Stop disallowing every goal where the offensive player even looks at the goalie the wrong way, goalies face contact all the time without goals being disallowed. Improve rewards and pack drops, they were absolute dogshit this year - and have them scale as the year goes on, an 86 should not be a purple drop in July. OK I'm done ranting and EA will do none of this, lol.

I like to play be a pro but it really needs improvements. So many bugs and stupid challenges. For example to get tape to tape x factor you need to do 30 breakaway passes and it's almost impossible to get them because 90% of those passes don't recister to breakway passes.

As a dman, it's hard to even play this game anymore. Every year, our kit just gets more and more useless. Poke check timing has to be so precise, yet even if you do everything right, your skater turns into a statue, and they just keep it and skate away on their breakaway. Also they need to teach people how to play 3s. Dmen are supposed to be involved, and it's man on man coverage. So sick of seeing ppl play 3s like it's 6s.

The thing that makes me so mad is all the broken goals. I poke check the puck off the attackers stick 3 times, and yet he still picks it up and scores from right in front. Or it goes off his skate and my goalie stretches for no reason and lets it in 5 hole. Also, the pressure system makes no sense bc the AI goalie with 0 energy makes a back door robbery but lets in a muffin point shot just because my defender has heatseaker. I also can’t stand the defence mechanics in the game anymore. I agree they had to nerf it for the pro players who were easily spamming hits and poke checks, but it’s just not realistic. After coming home from a long day at school or work, I don’t want to have to time my hits. I want to blow off some steam and destroy the AI. And I don’t want to put it on rookie because then it’s not challenging or fun. They should have kept the old, easy hitting when you set the game style to arcade, but keep the new style for competitive style. That way everyone gets what they want. The pike checking also makes no sense because why does my character lose 90% of his speed when I go for a single pike check. Or I poke and my defender goes nowhere near the puck. I’ll be having fun because I’m up 2-0, and then the most broken goal goes in, not because I get beat, but because something dumb happens. It makes me so frustrated and I never want to play more than one game at a time. It’s such a shame that we have no other options for hockey games because I would switch in a heartbeat

NHL 21 was the last good NHL game until they patched it to death. It had weight on the passes, skating, actually needed skill to land checks and the cross crease cheese was gone. But the casuals complained it was too hard and it had been arcade again ever since.

i hope they slow down the gameplay in eashl. In the 23-24 versions, there are fewer great goals. everyone plays the same boring counterattack and rebound game. for example, with powerplay it would be possible to circulate the puck more realistically. it would be great if the game at least resembled ice hockey when playing power play?

Honestly the gameplay is too fast which makes it unrealistic….every out there seems to be Conner mcdavid n players who don’t & wouldn’t do things in real life have the ability to do things they either wouldn’t do in real life or don’t have the skill to for example a Ryan traces shouldn’t be able to do the Michigan or a player let’s say like Tyler myers shouldn’t be able to either things like that are what make the game unrealistic player attributes need to actually make a difference if a player has bad puck control or 80 speed they need to play like they do

My Solution was - Stop buying the game. At least until I see that the reviews will be good... and EASports has not have a good review on their hockey game for quite a few years. Main issue I think is that EASports doesn't have any competition anymore therefore they don't have to make an effort to convince us to buy their products.. if you want a hockey game you HAVE TO get their game. NHL (the league) needs to break that stupid deal they made with EASports... but alas money talks!!!

i need everyone who brown noses chel 14 to actually go back and play it. I don't have any experiences with the newer games but as someone who just recently upgraded from 12, 14 has so many issues, its incredibly sluggish and near impossible to play defence with. Also imo realism in chel drives the depth of the game. No need to do actual breakouts when any pass connects, and blaming puck luck is often cope

I dont think EA has a “make AI moar smarter” switch to flip. I dont think the fix is as simple as you suggest. Goalies play like “superman” sometimes and play like absolute trash sometimes in real life too. There is no way to fix this. The goalies always play the same, its not like there is a code in the background running saying your goalie will play like garbage this game. Its the opponent that youre playing making the goalies look bad or good. Pucks SHOULD be able to go through goalies when theyre in position. If they didnt, there would be way less goals in real life and in the game. The goalies are almost always in position on the game, nobody would ever score. There SHOULD be more animations to make the game more fluid and vary more. When there are less animations for the game to choose from, the same animation is used 20 times a game and looks unrealistic and sometimes the animations arent the best for each super unique situation. There are infinity unique situations in every game you play, we need more animations so we can have better hits, puck pickups, etc. You should NOT be able to spam poke, players dont do it in real life because it doesnt work. There should be a downside to it. Every one timer in real life does NOT go in. Finally EA got it right here. Some go in, some dont. Every single little one timer shouldnt be going in the net. Just some of my opinions as a former top player. I havent bought the last 2 games, i waited for game pass access so i did get to play. What i actually want, is less x factor and ability type features. EA is turning the game into a MOBA or something with all the abilities. What is the point of having stats, if a player can just have truculence and be able to hit anyone despite their checking stats?

EA has incentivized goal scoring and offense for years. It’s only natural that people poke spam like they did in 23 and speed boost hits in 24 because their options are really limited and every maneuver is do or die with how the AI plays.

8:32 is a fantastic point, even as someone who would love a game that gets as close to that as possible. a 100% realistic hockey game would not only be quite unfun overall, but it would be borderline unplayable for online matches.

I think when most people complain about the realism, they want physics that make sense. Skating, turning, hits, pickups, goalie deflections… idk if anyone who plays competitively is in favor of glass or stick breaks.
