The popcorn is because in Sweden we call Americans "popcorn supporters" it kind of means that they usually sit back and eat popcorn while "stunts" (like cheerleaders, kiss cam etc.) are the "entertainment" while over here the supporters themselves make the atmosphere. You can say that we see them as customers while we are supporters.

By the way, that last video was from the Joe Louis Arena farewell. It was the home arena for the Detroit Red Wings, one of the original six teams and 11 time Stanley Cup champions, for 38 years. The Red Wings moved to the Little Caesars Arena at the start of the 2017-18 season but the Joe had a huge history, being the second oldest NHL arena only after MSG, so we made sure to give it a proper send off before it was decommissioned and demolished. Us Detroiters are insanely proud people (even if our teams fucking suck right now) so the Farewell to the Joe was HUGE. It was Henrik Zetterberg’s, the captain, 1000th game so there was a little ceremony before the game and then the Red Wings went on to win 4-1 that night. The video is from the ceremony after the game. Everyone got those little hockey sticks to raise to the rafters in tribute to the Joe with the Red Wings, the current team and all of the past greats on the ice together. There is a whole documentary about the Joe, that’s how important the arena was to the Red Wings and Detroiters.

Maple Leaf Gardens was opened in 1931 and closed in 1999. It was in use by the NHL for 68 years. The only arena to be used longer was the Montreal Forum which was in use from 1924-1996, four years longer than the Gardens. The Maple Leaf Gardens, however, is still in use as a hockey arena (though not by the NHL). It was also the site of the first NBA game in history as well as many other historic events. The Maple Leaf Gardens is one of the most historic arenas in the history of the game and still loved as a historic landmark. I was hoping the NHL would have taken the opportunity to have one last Stanley cup final in the Gardens during the return to play. Such a lost opportunity to pay homage to such an incredible building. Bitter Sweet doesn't even begin to describe the closing of Maple Leaf Gardens. I understand how it feels to watch a building close that is so intimately tied to the identity of a city and a sport.

@@joer8854 They wouldn't have been able to play the finals there because there's a Loblaws where the rink used to be. They even have a marker in one of the aisles to mark the location of centre ice. The rest of the facility is a Ryerson athletic facility, and I believe they have a rink on an upper level, but I don't know if it is NHL standard. They at least kept the exterior of the building intact so that you can see Maple Leaf Gardens written across the building.

Impossible, the European teams have existed for almost a hundred years and were influenced much more by Football. While Americans are only influenced by american football which is not even nearly the same. Yanks sit and eat during matches while Europeans keep on singing for their teams the entire match. That's the biggest difference. The yanks only sing "let's go rangers" and cheer for a little bit when the score. Europeans scream their hearts out every time and they sing like they are carrying their teams literally on their shoulders. It's overall just more aggressive and passionate and alive compared to american fans.

I’ve gone to hundreds of games in both the NHL and European leagues. NHL arenas are huge, and the numbers alone do create a lot of noise and excitement. European arenas are relatively small (usually), but the European fans are a lot more actively involved. You are spot on, NHL fans chant while European fans sing. Also, a lot of the fan views in the video from the European games are showing the fan corner - the cheap seats behind the visitor’s goal. That’s where the ultras hang out singing, banging drums and waving flags through the entire game. Those things would get you banned from an NHL arena - if you could even get them past the security at the door.

North American fans will cheer and make noise based on what's happening in the game/match. If it's a goal, a big catch, a big save a home run. In Europe, fans can sing and make noise, although it may have nothing to do with the play on the pitch/ice. Creates a good atmosphere also

Would much rather be in a nhl arena than European one. All the flags and streamers and placards are annoying. I want to watch the game , not have a flag in my face all game. I think that speaks to the quality of the game in Europe. They have to give the fans something else to enjoy rather than the quality of play. If you are watching Ovechkin or McDavid you don’t want a flag waving idiot dancing in front of you all game. You can also see how heavily influenced European hockey is by soccer. We all know that soccer is 90 minutes of mostly keep away with one, maybe two goals per game whereas hockey is big hits, fights, and goals. There is actually a product on the ice you want to watch, and it moves so fast you have to keep yourself focused on what is happening. You also have to keep your eye on the puck because it can leave the ice and hit you in the stands. I liked it better when the nets were not up behind the goal. Adam should react to that, pucks leaving the surface and hitting fans back in the old days.

In Europe fans never wave their flags during the game, only before the opening faceoff and when the home team scores. Also, this isn't a fair comparison because in Europe the atmosphere during regular season games isn't like the video suggests and arenas are usually only half full. But during playoffs both NHL and European games have awesome atmosphere 😎.

I'm a Canadian hockey fan, since 1950 or earlier, and I agree. Canadians are just not as expressive as those hot-headed Europeans or even Americans. Let's say 2 guys get into a fight in a bar. Canadians just stand back, watch, and get another beer. Sort of like what happens in a hockey game. "Jes stand back and let 'er go at 'em, boys." I think it might be the Scottish heritage from the 1800s when Scots were a big deal here. Scots are a taciturn people and rough around the edges. It caught on so even Asian-Canadians and Italian-Canadians are like that after a generation. My theory.

A Canadian myself who lives and breathes hockey can say that our fan engagement is not anywhere close to Europe whether its hockey or even soccer (footy). Hockey as a whole in North America don't grasp the concept of songs and anthems, we sing quick little chants such as "Go Caps Go" or "Lets go Caps" this is the same for every team in the NHL with a few tweaks here and there. Hockey in North America uses music to enhance fan engagement to "sing along" etc. Where as in the premier league there is no music its only fans singing songs and creating the atmosphere. I cannot say the same for european hockey as I do not follow those leagues. Cheers Adam
