Part of why old school hockey was more physical was the two-line pass. The rule was that you could not pass the puck from inside your own defensive zone past the center line. This made the game much slower and made lining up hits way easier. That's part of why Scott Stevens was so effective at making big hits. His team used a pressing system that took advantage of the rule by clogging the middle third of the rink and slowing down the pace of play further than usual, which gave him opportunities to hammer hapless forwards as the cut across the ice.

11:43 to your question…this shit has been argued over for a long time now. The ruling on the ice, and after league review, was that Lindros put his head down at the last moment, where Steven’s would have no chance to pull back. What your likely seeing and thinking is an elbow is the fact that when we hit, we make shoulder to shoulder contact, and the follow through with the arms. So this was exactly a textbook hit by Steven’s. It’s essentially the fault of the player who puts his head down at the last nanosecond. The saying is, “keep your head up, and keep it on a swivel”, they teach us this the second we are old enough to pay contact hockey, which is about 13-well it was 13 when I was young. It might be something different now.

Played hockey most my life (till I received an illegal hit from behind that put me in the hospital. paralyzed in the left leg and had to get back surgery and treatments.) and to answer your question. The "back in the day" hits where part of the "two line pass" rule. The middle of the ice was dead mans zone, because the puck carrier could not cross two lines, hence they had to pass it in the neutral zone. This ended up with players getting "yard sale" by bad passes and waiting players to capitalize on it. Scott Stevens made a career on this. When the NHL removed the two line passing rule, it was to make the game faster and introduce more scoring. That introduced puck hogs and players who thought they could "dangle" their way to the net. You get caught with your head down, and it's 100% you will wake up on the ice. Yes, if we saw a pretty boy, thinking he can dangle around and not be touched, was a open invite to the other team to change his attitude. But..if you missed that hit, you just gave an open lane to the bastard to score on you. So it was not like we were throwing bodies all the time, you had to pick when the right time came along. I have received hits in a game where the screws holding my helmet together popped out, concussions were the norm, and we would drink stupid mounts of booze just to dull injuries. I played with a guy who would throw up between shifts because he was in that much pain. But for those 25-45 seconds on the ice, you didn't feel shit.

Many of these are clean - though painful. I played organized hockey from the age of 6 up to 17 and then played in an indoor inline league til I was 30 or so. I wasn't big by any means - but I was fast and could finish. Maybe that's why Pavel Bure was my favorite player during the 90s. I was often cheap shotted - especially when I found myself in a corner or crossing the crease. Took two concussions from those. But the worst I ever had was when I happened to get slew-footed. I blew out my ACL once because I got slewed into the boards. Broke my clavicle on another. Blew out my MCL on opposite knee while I was simply trying to find my slot open-ice. Very dangerous and the NHL incidents look really bad when you consider how many soft-tissue injuries can happen from slew-footing. I've seen injuries like mine and even worse from it. Spinal injuries, head injuries, broken ankles, etc. If you're standing still, and somebody does it to you, there's a high chance of a torn knee or major groin tear. In motion, it's worse as it can send you on one blade into the boards - sometimes headfirst into the dasher.

Adam, you're awesome! The clips showing the glass breaking is indeed tempered glass. Those highlights are pretty old at this point, all prior to 2011. The NHL (and most other hockey arenas) now use Plexiglass, which doesn't shatter like the clips you see in this video. It does crack and break, but it's much easier to clean up and replace. It also breaks less often than the older styles of glass the league used.

Hi Adam! I love your NHL reactions the best. I watched the "Emotional NHL" video today, and some featuring St. Patrick. I'd LOVE to see your reaction to seeing the 2001 Avs finally getting a cup for Ray Bourque. That is about the best ceremony ever! Talk about emotional! It makes me cry every time. I love the early days of these videos, when you didn't quite know how hockey worked yet! I hope to see this one. Big fan here, of you and "our '22 Stanley Cup Champions!!!" Alson did you see they broke the Cup instantly? Too rich! Love the channel.

Adam you’ve reacted to Wayne Gretzky but you should react to one of the other goats of the NHL in Gordie Howe. The guy played as a regular in the lineup till his 50s and was the best in the world when he was younger. Howe played hockey from 1946 to 1980

Adam, that was Trevor Linden at 4:39 who broke the safety glass and that was the only time he has broken or dislodged the glass in a game. love the videos, keep it up

5:32 That is Detroit Red Wings Defenseman, Niklas Kronwall. He got notoriety with the Red Wings fans for his big, hard hits. Whenever he delivers those hit, they called it "getting *Kronwalled!"* However, the 2018-2019 NHL season would be the final season we saw Niklas Kronwall deliver those hits, as he retired before the 2019-2020 season.

Because hockey is an actual sport rather than just a game.

11:06 Yes. It really does. When you see someone trying all these dekes and fancy moves, it motivates you to try and send them into the 3rd row.

Soccer player sees a *REAL* hit for the first time ever... "Jesus! Nah, he's dead!" This is what a *MAN'S* sport looks like. Meanwhile Soccer player's are flopping around the field like fish outta water when someone blows a fart their way 🤣🤣🤣

One of the toughest things to watch is line drives back at pitchers in baseball. If you can survive those videos, you have no soul. Tee one of those videos up Adam!

Kronwall, the Detroit (red team) #55 is one of the greatest tacklers to ever play in the NHL, his hits got nicknamed "Getting Kronwalled" or "Kron-WALL of pain"

Adam i cannot stress this enough when I say that you need to react to "john Tavares knee to the head vs Canadiens" it happened last night in game 1 of playoffs and it was the scariest moments I've watched in hockey. Must watch the whole replay with the medical staff, not just the hit

This is what you call an under appreciated warrior sport with speed grit, tenacity and unbelievable skill. Oh ya and fighting. If you can ever see it live, its 100X better than KZbin video. Theres no deaths because their not soccer players.

Great to have you back Adam! But hear from one fan of yours: please do take the time you need off and to yourself when you need it. I'm a big fan of people taking the time they need to rest and just not do anything for a while. 10/10 vid as always dude.
