I think a cool way to do the panic index (and I think you have done it this way before) is to do an X-Y axis where the x axis is how they are doing and the y axis is how they were expected to do or if they are performing above or below expectations

@@boydriceisawesome2520 They have plenty of young guys either in the system or playing at the NHL level right now who have potential. Got Thompson and Thrun already playing in the NHL and both have looked pretty solid defense is already a far cry above what it was last season haven't even been the worse defense in the league this year Aves and Canadians have been worse. Then in their system they have Dickinson who has been lighting it up in the OHL with 8 goals and 11 assists in 13 games. Mukhamadullin with the Cuda who was supposed to be the big piece in the Timo trade but right now Zetterlund seems like he might have been the big get in that trade. And then they have guys like Cagnoni who was a 3rd round pick last year but is playing really well for the Cuda this year in his first AHL season with 9 points in 9 games. And Pohlkamp who may have been a 5th round pick last year but was talented enough to make the USA U20 team that Smith played on. So think they have some some solid pieces already on the roster in Thompson, Thrun and Mario. Have a handful of prospects so maybe would only need to sign 1 or 2 guys.

A couple of definitions: 1.) In my opinion, if you are in a playoff spot and your point percentage is .200 more than the WC 3 team, then you are jockeying for position and above the playoff race. 2.) Likewise, if you are not in a playoff spot and your point percentage is .200 less than the WC 2 team, then you are below the playoff race. There are no teams that fall in that second definition and only 7 in the first. This year, every team is still in the race for the playoffs, even the teams I assumed weren't even going to try this year. Obviously this could change, but I can't remember the last time this happened.

If you watch most of the sports analysts about winnipeg, even Eliotte Fileiedman, they have somewhat expected this started based on fact that they have mostly the same team as last year, stable off-season resulting in cohesion and chemistry and momentum at the start. As well as a record of 110 points last year. So even The coach says they expected to start good. Perhaps not 12-1 good, but good. The teams they have played have been a mix of easier to beat and harder teams.

As a NJ fan, I feel kind of the same way. In their defense, they've had the busiest schedule at the start. Plus, with the new coach, new players, and a couple of guys returning from injuries, some inconsistency isn't surprising. I've heard Keefe say a few times they haven't had time to practice. They've still looked good on defense and goalie-wise lately, even in the loss to Calgary. And Jack Hughes has been average for Jack Hughes.

I'd guess NJ would be a step down as they're close to .500 after missing playoffs but I guess other Metro teams troubles have them in a good spot. As a Kings fan, I am watching the Kings through my fingers waiting for the inevitable slide. However, they are getting production from across their lineup, and the defense is as good as last year. Judging Columbus in a panic index is insensitive. Panic is something the team and the fans were never going to contemplate this season. We're just hoping to experience healing and recovery. Despite what team management and coaches say for public consumption, playoff hopes were close to zero to begin with and then you lose your best forward to a team morale crushing tragedy.

I am also concern that Thatcher Demko will not be back. If Thatcher Demko comes back is he going to be up to the standard of player before injury?

Montreal definitely took a step … but it’s down. There is some media and fan pressure, because the organization said that we we’re going to be “in the mix” this season. The real pressure is going to be on, once the club is officially out of “the mix” extremely early on this season. On the plus side … another top5 pick ?

I’m a bit worried about the Bruins. You have to score goals to win games, and they can’t seem to figure it out. The chemistry isn’t the same as it was last year, which may also be the issue. It may take a little longer, but I’m somewhat hopeful that the forwards start to gel together a little better. Pasta and Poitras will lead the way as they settle into the new lineup

Detroit kept talking about being better defensively, they're a top 10 team right now in terms of goals allowed even with -6 differential, and a bunch of those goals allowed have been weird bounces off their own guys. But they're also a bottom 5 team offensively which is what the concern was going into the season from fans. I think maybe they just need to take more chances offensively, maybe they can get those 5-4 wins

Detroit's getting nowhere until Lalonde is gone. I'm sick of the line juggling and dump and chase strategy. Line juggling tells me he's throwing random combinations to see what sticks except he doesn't even stick with one. Make Larkin, Kane, and Raymond the first line and Tarasenko, Debrincat, and Compher the second. It won't guarantee to work immediately so give it at least a couple games to develop.

Two areas where the Oilers should be in a panic mode is their Goaltending and their PK. Both at the bottom of the League. It’s amazing that they have 6 wins with that Goalie tandem.

If you count ties/OTL as losses, the Habs have only had 2 seasons with a 60%+ win percentage in the past 30 years. This team has been mediocre at best for a generation, only winning games because of Roy and Price.

Habs fan here, agree with the panic for montreal. This was supposed to be the year that montreal took a step, and so far they are not taking a step. Most concerning for me is that Caufield is scoring, defense is getting better, but they're still losing games that they should be winning. Something needs to change, but it's hard to say what. Therefore: panic.

Montreal has issues. If they had started last season like this it wouldn't have bothered me, but I don't see the positives for the overall team that I saw at the end of last season. I do see some positive development for a few individuals but as a team they can't perform well for a full 90.

Different factors for Helle... he plays 60/82 games pretty much every year. He decides how often he plays (although that may have changed this year as Comrie has had quite a few starts already with the new coaches). I think he's just done when it comes to playoffs. Plus, when there's slacking off of the guys in front of him (like in the game vs Toronto) then sh*t happens. So I'm saying if he gets 50 starts, does the 4 nations playoffs he'll be not as exhausted at end of regular season this year.

I dont understand how Anaheim STILL gets left of the hook. They have been rebuilding for, what, 7-8 years? They have been collecting picks for so long, none of them are panning out. Yeah, they switched GMs once during that time, but still. All I see there are previous high picks losing value every year. If I were part of that fan base, I'd be seething right now. They were in no position to take such a swing on Sennecke at 3rd last draft imo. He better pan out, or they better develop him well, because Zegras and MacTavish are not lighting much of anything on fire. I'll be patient with Carlsson, but I'm worried and have exactly 0 faith in this management group already. Dostal having to make 40 saves a night and not pick up the win... doesn't that remind you of the majority of John Gibson's career? How in the world isn't there any urgency over there? I also have a problem with Edmonton not being in panic mode. IMO, last year should have 0 bearing on any power ranking or index past week 1. The Oilers did not fix their biggest issues last summer and those issues are shooting them in the foot again. Goalie stability and OMG DO SOMETHING ABOUT NURSES CONTRACT. You dont find someone to play with him, hes a 9m player.... He should be able to play with anyone and make them look at least decent. But he can't. And he's hurting yourt salary structure NOW. Before you resign McD and Bouchard... I'm sorry but that's bad management. I don't care what NMC Nurse might have (that argument is so weak don't even start lol), he's shown he is overpaid. Move him. Spending futures doesn't matter, you are RIGHT THERE, your foot is literally in the cups door. And for the goalies.... jesus christ, SKINNER AND PICARD ARE UNRELIABLE. Its nice they picked it up last year in the playoffs, but has the team not learned you are just a bad pass away from losing it all? The management there sucks. Holland sucked and did nothing for 3 years and the new guy did what... brought in Skinner when their obvious needs were all behind the blue line? WTF? AND they got punked by the Blues. McDavid and Drai are gonna pull this team to a cup despite their GMs, I swear...

Seattle is beating the teams they’re supposed to but can’t get a surprise point or win, then the 2 shutouts and 1 goal in Toronto were concerning. They’re also good enough that they won’t have a shot at a top draft pick which is why I’m panicked as a Seattle fan.

News of Landeskog suffering a potentially career-ending setback in his recovery and Makar possibly missing a game or more with the current litany of injuries is just back-breaking. There's a reasonable chance they don't even make the playoffs if their luck doesn't turn around.

Wouldn't put Avs in the panic category, even tho they are below where they were expected to be, everyone watching and the org. are well aware of the injury situation and can understand why it's a tough situation, especially since they have been hit a lot with injuries and other absences the past few years, which i'm sure takes it's toll on the star players that are healthy and has to carry the team for long stretches. It's obviously not the same team with half their 2 top lines are out. I guess the only thing there is some irritation around is the goalie situation, but that's about it. Also the recent cup kinda makes the situation different. Would it be fun to win another one? ofcourse, but it won't cause depression if they don't, like it does in Toronto, Buffalo etc. for good reason.

Concerned is the perfect spot for Ottawa the team has taken 2 nights off against MTL and BUF. 2 of the weakest teams in the division as well as the bad road record in saying that though their 2 best games have been on the road against VGK and NYR and they didn't get the result in either. Ultimately the team has looked way better so far but they need to start getting the results and finding ways to win when they are the better team which has been well over half their games this season not too mention they've played some really hard competition I'm really interested to see how they do over the next couple weeks with an easier schedule against NYI, BOS, TOR, PHI, CAR (still tough but that speaks to the opponents they've already played)
