The Islanders ran them out of the rink with virtually the same roster the year before. The Oilers got their due then next season as the Isles were in their 20th straight playoff round. 5 long seasons and 5 straight finals will do that to you.

NY Rangers It's not even close,Yzerman posted 65 goals and 90 assist one year playing with a bunch of nobodies.Messier never came close to that,plus Yzerman was much better defensively and wasn't a dirty player like Messier was!
@amazinmets84398 жыл бұрын
Ahhh so you're a Messier hater. Gotcha. No wonder you have Yzerman ranked higher lol. Look kid, Yzerman was a great player but he was no Messier. That takes nothing away from Yzerman, but you're comparing him to a guy who is out of his league (Messier). Messier's numbers, especially in the playoffs, destroy Yzerman's. Messier also won 2 Hart trophies (almost 3, came in 2nd in 1996) to Yzerman's zero. The only thing you got right was "it's not even close" as Messier had the far more distinguished and better career than Yzerman. We're not talking Orr vs. Lemieux here. If you want to compare Yzerman to someone don't pick a guy like Messier, who is up there with Gretzky and Howe in the top 5 all-time. You won't win too many of those arguments, bud.
@timroot58528 жыл бұрын
NY Rangers if Gretzky and Lemieux never existed Yzerman would be known as the greatest center in NHL history!Plus he played for 1 organization his whole career and was the best and longest serving Captain in all of sports!Yzerman didn't care about individual awards like Messier did which makes him a better teammate also!

You know Gretzky could’ve been traded to the Red Wings, but that never happened because he wouldn’t put the Red Wings in the position to draft Konstantinov, Federov and Lidstrom after the 1988-89 season. Had Gretzky been dealt to the Red Wings, Yzerman would end up wanting out. The Red Wings won 4 more cups than Gretzky since he left the Oilers.

@@Ace96x10 No need to be a jerk. It's just a question. Is there anything in my original statement that suggests antagonism? Really, like I can't ask a question out of curiosity to see what people think without all that attitude? "Bowman thinks what he thinks?... Who's right then?" Did I say anything about right or wrong? All I asked was your opinion on which was the best team overall. Anyway, the 84 Oilers had a better regular season record *and* they defeated a 4-time defending champion in 5 games with scores such as 7-2, 7-2 and 5-2. Is that more or less impressive than sweeping a President's Trophy winner who had not yet won the Cup and may have only gotten there 2 years earlier because of Steve Smiths' goal. Hmmm.... hmmm... I also think it's funny that you don't want to include regular season in your equation (even if it's just a fun question) but you quote the Flames winning the President's Trophy as if that meant something. Which is it? Does regular season count or not count? And your point about the Flames being #1 also proves my point. I'm looking for the best team when combining regular season and playoffs which you don't want to do, fine. Just say you don't want to do it.

@@September2004 Interesting.. Lol. You seem to need to pretend that my answer to you was insulting. I'm an NYI fan but first i'm a hockey fan..even when Gretzky would score a goal on the NYI I would admit great hockey no matter who was playing..and the league hasn't produced anybody like these 2 teams...some goals were as beautiful of a great Opera, seeing the whole play pass to pass like artwork out..My dad got the NYI account from METLIFE in 78 so as a 7-year-old and hockey player I got to sit behind the scene and eat ,have locker room time with these guys..and the first cup..after every game they would all meet at a Burger King Bobby Ny would should up with Butch and they were off to paint in there beat up painting vans...world champs making no money painting after playoff games too... crazy times

Gretzky and this team literally saved the NHL...that league was on its last legs. Because of all the brawling and fighting, NBC had dropped covering the games.
