I never played hockey, but growing up in a small town outside of Boston, you go to games, know figure skaters, know hockey players, and probably have a hockey stick in your garage for no reason other than to whack something once in a while. I always enjoyed watching it even though I played soccer and baseball.

The hit at 4:31 was Brian Campbell on R.J. Umberger during the 2006 playoffs. At the next game in the series between those two teams, a fan had a sign with a picture of a can of Campbell's "Cream of Umberger" soup. Many of these hits are to the head, which now are punished by suspensions. If I remember correctly, the guy who got hit at 8:50 never played again.

Phil mentioned that Paul Kariya was getting hit and knocked out on the ice and then coming back to score a big goal towards the end of the game. Talking with a player on the Mighty Ducks the next year they played, he said his team players were happier than those on the Devils that he was hit. That hit finally woke him up. That is what I was told.

I've been going to hockey games since I was 10 in 1964. No other game comes close. Nothing like the sound of a hockey game. And, when people today go to their first game are surprised at how big the players are now. 6'5 and 250 pounds are not too rare today. Fighting will never go from the NHL. If you have not done so check out the video on the Code in hockey.

Btw u paused it but at 5:00 that’s the Stevens Kariya hit, you’re correct he quit breathing that’s why his visor fogs up is the big gasps when he came back to and he doesn’t remember any of it hit game winner nothing to this day wasn’t really ever the same after! Here's a suggestion taylored for a reaction clip: the April 20th, 1984 ''Good Friday'' playoff game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Quebec-City Nordiques. Game 6 out of 7, QC leading 3-2. Went in the books as the longest brawl in NHL history, lasted an hour. To make a long story short (SPOILER ALERT): Carbonneau (Mtl 21) had the job of shadowing the best players, in this case Stasny (Qc 26.) Late in the 2nd period they fell wrestling; Carbonneau trash-talking Stasny who throws a punch. It went downhill from there. At one point Mark Hunter (Mtl 20) jumps on his brother Dale (Qc 32) who's losing it with two teammates on Mario Tremblay (Mtl 14), who had just skated the length of the ice to slam some Qc player head first into the board. Things cooled down when Hamel (Mtl 28) got sucker-punched into early retirement. Never played again. The fighting carried-over to the third period: starting in the warm-up with no referees on the ice yet. With all the ejections and penalties - 10 players out + 200 penalty minutes - there were just a few players remaining on the bench when play finally resumed. The rest of the game is worth watching too: down 0-2 it turned to orgasmic delight for the Montreal fans (Mtl winning the series the next game.) I remember watching on TV going ''Holy shit!'' That rivalry was unbeleivably intense, even amongst the fans: there were always two games between Christmas and New Year, sometimes on the 24th or 31st. The next day there were numerous news stories about family fights breaking-out, police interventions and people ending-up in hospital. Crazy! PS - The NHL version on YT is an edit. Look for the longer (DVD or French TV) version.

Life long hockey fan, I love the big hits and the fights but I don't like the fights after every big hit except if it's a dirty hit like to the head or if the player is 4 feet from the boards that type of hit requires retribution, it's the player doesn't have his head up and gets layed out with a clean hit then that's hockey and doesn't require any retribution. That's my opinion.

Biggest hits of all time? A bit bias and definitely too short. Besides, being bias myself, no one beats the Detroit Red Wings in the 90’s. Konstanstinov and the Russian Five, Darren McCarty, Lindstrom, Brendon Shannahan, Bret Hull and when he was pissed, Steve Yzerman. But the toughest man in the NHL, ever, is Kris Draper. No one will ever change my mind.

I hate when making a good hit (that can still have you needing medical attention) and get jumped by others because they mad you clocked their teammate. It ruins the game. It's a physical sport, you get tackled and might get hurt. Recognize a good tackle and accept that your buddy got humbled and keep playing man ffs. Just because the guy don't get up immediatelly making it look foul doesn't take away it was a good clean hit.
