This is because the majority of hockey players in the NHL are not American. They mostly hail from Canada, russia, and scandinavia. It's just cultural differences between those people and Americans that really don't leave a lot of room for controversy.

It's mainly black people that need some financial education. Affluent whites, Asians and Jews tend to be good with money. You rarely hear these stories about Jewish people. About 2 years ago I saw an Asian father teaching his 2 daughters aged around 5 and 7 year old about inflation. I wonder how many black millionaire adult athletes know what inflation even means....

@@Showzstarz Agreed. It's down to parents. It's lazy to expect school to teach this. Every parent should read "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert T Kiyosaki (mandatory for all rich or poor. Just because a parent is a low paid wage slave doesn't mean their kids have to be) and then read various finance and investment web sites. It's parents who give bad spending and budgeting habits to kids.

I'm so thankful that my father granted me the gift of financial literacy. My grandma unexpectedly left $75,000 to me a few years ago and when I found out, my first call was to my dad asking him what I should do with the money. He had me put it in an index fund and I've earned a couple thousand dollars in just interest so far and every year I earn more interest. In a couple of years the projection calculator says I'll be earning an extra $2,000 a month in just interest alone and will push my retirement up by almost 2 years. Compound interest and starting early are the two keys to retiring comfortably.

The Cornelia Effect (named after the great economist/finance advisor Spencer Cornelia): When a young (or old) individual lacking key expertise and experience in financial matters receives a sudden influx of cash and goes crazy with it. In most cases, the annihilation of the wealth is almost total. Some cases can recover and prosper. It can also happen multiple times to a single individual. There are correlations to be made between the age, the source of revenues (sports, acting, music, stock market, etc.), the level of education and the personality of the individual (addictive behavior, poor self-esteem, etc.) I can see the wikipedia page from here hehe nice vid as usual!

I have no sympathy for these fools. It’s so so simple - do not spend more than you make. No matter if your salary is $50k or a contract for $4m. I’m 22 and if i ever won the lottery or got signed to a pro sports team I’d get, idk, like a financial advisor? I’d use GOOGLE to see how to be smart with my money? So many resources and these guys blow through millions in just a couple of years. It’s ridiculous! Just tax the shit out of them to provide for the less fortunate. It’s ridiculous these guys blow through so much money without even a second thought just to end up bankrupt while millions are suffering in the next city over. I’d rather the money go to help those people rather than so some guys can spend all their money on houses and vacations before going broke too! Makes no sense!

I have a theory about why the Sharks did this. Evander Kane throughout his career has been known as a prima donna. Always unhappy with his role, constantly in fights with teamates, and just generally being a cancer (notice the multiple trades in his career). However, his talent on the ice can make a lot of those problems dissappear in the minds of front office staff, thus the massive long term contract. Kane probably asked the team to underwrite the deal and to do it quietly. The Sharks realize that Kane is a lot more valuable on the ice than throwing another fit or requesting to be traded with an anchor of a contract, and so the Sharks agree. A terrible descion for the Sharks, and an even worse descion for Evander Kane.

That is completely INSANE! The team should’ve insisted that he go to financial counseling or planning instead of getting into debt with him. He also needs gambling anonymous. I didn’t even realize hockey was even that popular even before the pandemic. Have they won the Stanley cup lately? This is huge mismanagement by the team. Someone needs to be fired.

Yeah Sharks aren’t going to win the cup any time soon. They’ve got about $25 million dollars tied up in aging defenseman for the next 5 years, and they’re already bottom of the barrel. This situation with Kane isn’t even the most of their problems
@TKCEDM
@TKCEDM 4 жыл бұрын
The Sharks have been a perennial playoff contender for the last two decades, making the playoffs pretty much every year. They came very close, however, have never been able to tie the bow. They traded tons of assets for a superstar defenseman who just came off major surgery after playing through a serious injury during a length playoff run, signed him to an 11.5 million dollar contract for 8 years and gave up their first round pick amongst other prospects. They fell hard in the standings due to injuries and the team they traded the first round pick to got to pick third overall with their pick and draft likely a future superstar in the making. One of the other prospects they traded is currently playing first line center for the team they traded him to along with one of the roster players still currently playing. Add on to the debt and that trade, they've also signed numerous other bad contracts including a 7 million dollar contract for another I believe 6 years for a defenseman who isn't good anymore, 8 years for a defenseman who's still good but takes him until he's 40, another 8 years for a center who's still good but takes him up until he's 40. Kane's contract is also 7 million. The NHL has a hard cap meaning you can't spend over the salary cap under any circumstances and all those contracts takes them to over 35 million dollars amongst 5 players with a hard cap of 82 million. Yeah... The Sharks are terribly mismanaged.
