I don't know. I'm rooting for the Habs here, and at first glance this looks awful. On replay, I don't think the stick comes above the shoulder, so it's not technically a high stick. It might look like it from parallax, but I think his stick was down until it hit Perry's stick and then glanced up to the face. Also, the play was very clearly for a puck. It was just a sucky accident. That being said, I wouldn't have cried foul if he'd gotten a penalty for... recklessnes or something. Maybe that should be a new call? Reckless endangerment? I actually like that idea. I'd have settled for a high stick though. But really, I'm on the fence about that one. Seems like one of those crappy things that just happens in hockey, not entirely sure if it should be a penalty.

“Hey there’s a puddle of blood… Hey Tom, you wanna ask some questions? Or should we just keep going?” Paraphrasing, but it was absolutely hilarious because that’s exactly what I was thinking - except it is pretty normal for there to just be some teeth or blood randomly on the ice or your jersey or whatever. I do appreciate that you covered the correct theme here Steve - it’s not any one team getting favoritism, it’s just horrible officiating. The Pelech cross check on Point was one of the worst ones I’ve seen live too… the Perry getting high sticked was awful too, even though it was an accident. However, there’s no excuse for not only just getting a call wrong on a scoring opportunity on the player who’s got the advantage, but getting so wrong that instead that player gets penalized for getting cross checked in the back, losing his scoring opportunity, and having his head bounced off the cross bar. None of these are good though… this is why rules should be called by the rules, and if the rules are too subjective they should be changed. You don’t want the refs deciding which things to call or not call because they feel like it. Every playoffs recently has been horrible and there’s always a different standard of how they call the playoffs, but they do seriously need to evaluate this.

NO that is not a tripping penalty, tampa player clearly is going for the puck, and the new york player is clearly the main possessor or soon to be possessor of the puck. And the force of the stick swing seems relatively light. And the stick hits him above the skate level.
@dylanhoward49783 жыл бұрын
Since when do any of those things impact whether it's tripping or not? Going for the puck or not doesn't matter (actually hitting the puck first hasn't even mattered for at least 5 years), tripping the player with the puck has never been more allowed than tripping a different guy, and I don't even know how you argue that tripping a guy by hitting him above the skates is anything different (he also hit him directly in the skate anyway). Maybe the statement about it being light contact is something but claiming how hard any of these things are from video that's slowed down is nonsense.
@LeSyd19843 жыл бұрын
Textbook tripping since the new CBA and reworking of the rules. Sadly this is akin to pitching the puck in the stands or accidentally slightly brush an opponent's glove with your stick. They will call that 100% of the times but guys running each other's face into the boards or the ice it'll always be questioned and might be called depending on the status of the game. (When sliding/going for the puck you have to touch it otherwise it's tripping...) Hooking is also a funny one since you can easily grab a dude's stick, plug it under your armpit and spin around for a near automatic 2 min PP. But if you touch a guy with your bare glove to avoid slamming his face in the corner you'll get an equal odd of drawing a 2 PK. (+/-50% chance depending on the colour of your jersey: red counts double, lol!)

Good video. Thank you. One more I would add right after the Hedman ‘soft’ BS tripping, with about four seconds left and down one, McDonagh does a spin move and Nelson does one of the most blatant trips in playoff history. He literally completely misses McDonagh’s body but gets McDonagh’s right leg with his own legs. Because he was falling down from the trip, McDonagh couldn’t lift the puck or get much heat on it, which is why Pulach was able to make the hand save on the goal line. That was no ‘questionable’ call either. Check it out.
@kieranperreaultdit-morin92623 жыл бұрын
The Hedman one was a trip He got his stick in and tripped clutterbuck lol that’s tripping but usually in the playoffs that doesn’t get called In the regular season it’s a penalty every time

Exactly. I don't even think there are even any hairs to try splitting here, he clearly tripped the guy.

No penalty: Hedman played the puck, so did Clutterbuck. Cal lost his balance, it wasn’t due to the stick.

Respectfully, I don't think it can be denied that Clutterbuck lost his balance due to Herman's stick.

@mikegruits21373 жыл бұрын
@@troubleondemand7703 I'm not sure the puck being there takes a tripping call off the table. In my opinion, I think Steve nailed it: it's a soft call - especially in the playoffs - but Herman's swipe undoubtedly caused Clutterbuck to lose his balance. Soft? Yeah. A penalty? Probably.

Should have been embellishment.
@1911skippy3 жыл бұрын
I could have lived with 2 each, tripping and embellishment. My OPINION is that Hedman played the puck cleanly and Clutterbuck was stumbled but flopped for the call. For the record, I am ethically obligated to report that my living room is painted Bolts Blue. ⚡2 Cups ⚡

Yep I really don't understand why coaches & players are fined like that for questioning how bad the ref can be sometimes. Maybe, just maybe there's a reason they complain? Bettman: No you moron, don't tell media my refs are bad and don't question their ability to do their job.

The Hedman penalty is a trip if he doesn't make contact with the puck. The McNabb punch needs to be a penalty though... when people start shoving it's up to you if you want to call both of them or not, once it gets to the extra level and punches you HAVE to call something
