There's a lot of talk about how the refs don't want to be responsible for deciding a game by making a penalty call, but nothing about how egregious it is when they don't make a call that should be. They are making the conscious decision to interfere in the proceedings just as much when there are blatant penalties that go uncalled.
@HeavyMetalorRockfan9

Precisely, and it is specifically high skill teams that are punished the most by this. It's an open secret that the Oilers have to be fouled 4 or 5 times to earn one powerplay BECAUSE their powerplay is so deadly, and then people go shitting on their 5v5 as if 5v5 is fair if one team gets to consistently foul the other
@CorporateCornholio
@CorporateCornholio Жыл бұрын
@@HeavyMetalorRockfan9 I would expect a "high skill" team to be able to get it done 5 vs 5. Edmonton depended too much on the powerplay and it came back to haunt them in the end. Edmonton and Toronto are carbon copies of each other in how they are build and they both suffered from the same lack of depth.

@@CorporateCornholio tell me you haven't watched the oilers without telling me you haven't watched the oilers trying to claim that the oilers aren't a high skill team is the single most braindead criticism I've ever heard - you can criticize their defensive effort, you can criticize their goaltending, but you're talking about the fifth highest 5v5 scoring team in the regular season, every single bottom 6 player had over 10 goals, our 3rd and 4th lines beat the 3rd and 4th lines of the opposition 5v5 in both series we played. A way bigger issue is the fact that McDavid and Hyman were both kneed and couldn't skate properly, Nugent-Hopkins had an upper body injury so he couldn't battle for pucks or shoot, Draisaitl's wrists were blatantly targeted by the opposition (he went from carrying the team to sinking it in the two games afterwards). Kane is still recovering from the laceration as well as having broken fingers. The entirety of the top 6 was injured, not one or two guys, not some adversity, the entirety. Adin Hill put up Vezina numbers while our own goaltending imploded. 3 of the 4 games lost even with everything the difference was purely in goaltending (if both guys put up average numbers the Oilers win almost every single game in the series).
@CorporateCornholio
@CorporateCornholio Жыл бұрын
@@HeavyMetalorRockfan9 I will overlook the childish insult. I did not say the top four were not talented skill players but the team as whole is not. More so than anything I blame the salary cap for this. Hockey is a team sport and when you cannot get support from all of your lines, you cannot win, even if your top line is loaded with all of the talent and skill in the hockey world. When you lack the cap space to bring in suitable players, you end up with what you can afford under the cap. Edmonton and TO loaded up the front, skimped on the back end and both teams fell earlier than expected. TBH what Canadian did not want an Edmonton vs Toronto final?

@@HeavyMetalorRockfan9 it's entirely indicative of the officiating difference between regular offseason that the two times Tampa won the cup they were the most penalised team in the regular season and were one of the least during the offseason. They knew the types of plays that can go uncalled in the 'yoffs and were able to exploit it.

Refs get calls wrong on both sides. People tend to focus on the missed calls that the losing team received but I think it mostly balances out. Also, the speed of the game makes it difficult to make every call. We have the luxury of going back and looking at replays from different angles, slow motion. When I watch the Knights Oilers play in full speed, I can see how a ref making a split second decision sees a follow through. In fact, during the game I actually thought he flopped and never got touched. It was a high stick though, not saying it wasn't.

From what I've read, the tracker in the puck is accurate to one inch. That means the puck needs to be a full inch past the goal line for it to be certain. That's not very helpful in most of these hard-to-tell situations where we can't tell because it's under a pad and within an inch of certainty. And unlike tennis, we can't have ten cameras be relatively unimpeded to track the court/ice. Tennis has no more than 2 people in the area being tracked (doubles), which means relatively little interference for the cameras. Where can we put 10 cameras in an arena to track that isn't blocked by 6 skaters and a goalie? I'd sooner put two or four more cameras in the pipes - one or two in each post. I'd also consider either two additional cameras looking a little downward and to the sides of the main camera on the moving arm so it doesn't miss low shots as often - which was an issue with this shot's ability to be seen.
@AryssSkaHara
@AryssSkaHara Жыл бұрын
Also, not stated clearly, but that puck tracker is optical and works off IR cameras above the ice. The "chip" in the puck is an IR blinker, nothing more.
@alcion8423
@alcion8423 Жыл бұрын
How hard would it be to put in the puck a radio frequency generator, and then just have sensors around the arena to pick up the signal, then a computer to trigonometry the position of the puck from that? Its no different from GPS or radio altimeters or any of the many, many positional calculating systems in use around the world. I mean sure it has to survive being bashed around by the players, but if its already able to have an IR blinker then clearly electronics can survive in it being bashed around.

Thats the kind of stuff Im trying to say. Plenty of crappy calls and both teams should be mad but when you lose the game or the series, you're the one crying the loudest. The refs are bad, but there's probably not better refs you can get in there that would always make the right call. All were going to end up with is more reviews. Every penalty gets reviewed, every goal gets reviewed to see if there should have been a penalty. Thats where were headed with this.

I am also a casual fan with the same thoughts, the idea that penalties don't effect the out come of games but power plays do is ludicrous. It's the only league I can think of that acts as though arbitrarily enforcing the rules makes the product better. All I have to say is this, if calling a penalty is such an egrigeous game altering event I can only think of one solution and that's get rid of the power play and come up with a new way to penalize teams.

The only one I have a problem with is the Gudas vs Järnkrok play. Yes Gudas grabbed his stick, however if you slow it down, Järnkrok goes grabbing at Gudas's stick with his right hand first. It's not as if he's some innocent party in the play. Gudas only goes for Järnkrok's because he's getting his grabbed at.They were both going for each other's sticks with their free hand. I think that makes them offset.

And Gudas was trying to move a stick that was going into his midsection. It's not like he grabbed it off of the ice. It’s a double-edged sword. Players are pushing A LOT harder in the playoffs, so with that, penalties would come more frequently. So they let them play for the most part. It’s not a perfect system for sure, but unless you want 80% of the game to be power plays, I understand why they do it that way. Also, power play goals in OT makes for a very un-exciting finish so I don’t care myself. It’s always how it’s been. Always.

You can't get mad about the no call onto Gudas on the OT winner, since Tkachuk was clearly tripped on what would have been a wrap around goal for sure and there was no call. Result ended up being the same as it should have been right there.

Yeah... some of these no calls changed the outcome of the gams... and then like even the over the boards call against the Oilers when it was deflected halfway up the boards in a scrum... like why?

Skinner saw there was a Vegas player along the boards in that direction, so I don't know why he sent it in that direction instead of backhanding it to the other corner. Also, WHY DO THESE GOALIES FEEL THE NEED TO PASS IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ICE? You're just asking for trouble by doing that. And very poor decisiveness by Bouchard on that pass attempt from the corner. He looked like he was going to get it, lets the Vegas player get to it first, and just like that, Oilers trail in a game where their season is on the line. On that high stick on Ekholm, it was a follow through, even though Ekholm disrupted the clearing attempt with his stick. But hey, they set the precedent when they ruled Wayne Gretzky's high stick on Doug Gilmour a follow through instead of a penalty, and this was more of a follow through than that play from 30 years ago.

The way I see it, Järnkrok took his hand off his own stick to grab Gudas' stick and tangle it up, and it wouldn't have been available for Gudas to grab bad he not tried to do the same. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

The first thing I said after that Reilly goal=no goal was we need goal line technology like yesterday. Soccer has it and works like a charm.

Honestly, how does soccer "work like a charm"? I've never seen a soccer ball get kicked at the net and people lose sight of it in the goalkeepers equipment where he has to shake it out of his shorts. It's not the same. Of course, soccer balls don't travel nearly as fast as a hockey puck. Soccer kicks are about 60-65mph. I know a 13 year old with a 72mph slapshot.

The later the series goes on, the number of penalties decrease. This is always the case, every series, every year. The later and later a series goes on, the more and more players will get away with all sorts of crap.

The oilers got away with holding the stick in both series among other things. It is just legal in the playoffs. So is the old school "clutch and grab" behind the net and in the corners.

Make the ice in the goal behind the line clear and have multiple upwards facing cameras all along the line?

All they need to do is have a tracking sensor on puck and inside of goal. Evidence. No exceptions. I find it sweet. Truly…that they leave some guessing left in the game. Some drama. But goal/no solution can be perfected quickly without a puck costing more to make. A 360 degree sensor on outer side of pucks. The on ice counterpart sensor on goal line linked through a program directly Toronto. A one time investment in every 64 goal lines in league. Will have to be 100% calibrated precisely. Easy concept/idea. A couple of engineers could have an installment ready in no time.

I’ve heard a lot about how the Gudas stick holding was an accident, but Gudas intentionally shoves his own stick in the defenseman’s way which caused him to get caught up, which last time I checked was also not allowed😂Not a fan of either team here, but guys get pissed in Men’s league for crap like that where nothing actually matters. In a Stanley Cup Playoff elimination game that’s at least gotta be a “if you do that again I’m calling you for it”. And since it’s a series clinching goal it has to be more than that

Could you imagine a non goal like the one that didn't count for the Maple Leafs in a game 7 overtime Stanley Cup final. It's high time a microchip in the puck and technology is introduced in the NHL before a team gets robbed of a potential Stanley Cup win.

I absolutely can. If that was OT in game 7 and THAT was the game-winning goal that would be infinitely more controversial than it not being allowed since there’s zero absolute proof of it being over the line before the play was stopped (which really shouldn’t be controversial). Would have also just been a terrible, terrible Stanley Cup winning goal.

Jesper Fast's miss was awful... Meier's was worse. Fast had a bouncing puck, so you can find the barest hint of an excuse for him (even though that puck NEEDS to be in the back of the net). Meier's was ON HIS STICK! Mind-boggling misses, both of them.

Shouldn’t the dang it be allowing freaking Gudas(?!!!?) to lead a charge up the ice on a 3 on 2, with one of the two back a freaking forward… in overtime… in an elimination game. GUdAS?!? Who is slower than Lucic. But no, ya, it’s definitely him holding the stick that made that goal go in.

The real dang it is on all of us (myself included) who complain about all the reffing but still come back season after season and spend money on the product be it stadium tickets, merch, streaming, etc. The NHL would do something about it if everyone just decided they'd had enough and stopped spending money on the product because reffing and DOPS are useless because they then couldn't afford not to. However, that is an idea not based in reality and the NHL will still make its money and we will still spend our money and we will still complain and nothing will change.

But... Gudas *didn't* grab Jarnkrok's stick. Gudas' right hand stays on the right side of his body, never comes close to Jarnkrok's stick. Gudas' left hand is firmly gripping his own stick; if had had grabbed Jarnkrok's stick with his left hand then he would have had to drop his own to do so. What Gudas does is push his stick forward to prevent Jarnkrok's from making a pokecheck, which is: a) *not* holding, and b) *not* a penalty.
