I've gone to dozens of NHRA races since the mid seventies. My "local" sanctioned track was Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. For many years it was home to the Summernationals which over 4 days would draw hundreds of thousands of fans. I've seen my share of scary crashes, engine explosions and fires. The worst was in 2008 when I took my teenage daughter to her first drag race. During the second round of qualifying there was a massive engine explosion right in front of where we were sitting, you could feel the shock ten rows up. The car driven by Scott Kalitta disintegrated and ended up in the safety net at the end of the track. Sadly we found out later that Scott was killed in the explosion, strange thing I was at hi first Summernationals in the early eighties too.

The bodies on the Funny Cars cost around $35,000.00 to $45,000.00 US. The whole machine can set you back almost $300,000.00. That price tag does not include the transporters, extra engines/parts, fuel, or tires. Each race can cost upwards of $1,000,000.00 and sometimes more, like the John Force, Connie Kalitta, or Don Schumacher teams that have multiple cars competing at each event.

That very first clip when you say they have to rebuild that whole thing now, They tear those engines down to bare block between every pass down the track. I'm assuming they have a spare in the trailer for an issue that resulted in catastrophic failure to th block, heads, or blower. The Nitro they run through those cars is so explosive and corrosive they get started on alcohol and then they switch to Nitro after they are running. The shut down process is the same. It gets switched back to alcohol until all the Nitro is flushed out then it can be shut down. If you par close attention when they start the motor you can hear the change.

@@corzahazard444 Nitromethane, no nitrous oxide needed or wanted. Nitromethane (nitro) carries most of it's own oxygen and has a combustion range so wide they can almost fill a cylinder with liquid and fire it.... and they don't because filling a cylinder is one of the major causes for those gigantic fireballs you just watched. Nitrous oxide breaks down in the heat and lets go of oxygen, that's why it's used with gasoline, diesel, and alcohol. The process absorbs some excess heat and lets you put more fuel into the cylinder and burn completely... the net effect is burning a charge that would otherwise need a physically larger engine to fit. They say "no replacement for displacement", but nitrous is extra displacement in a bottle, and turbos are also 'making displacement' by compressing the intake air, which then can handle more fuel, etc.
