you should read one of the Delia books, she goes into really great detail about all of the ingredients and how you should cook them, also the science behind it. As someone who is really into cooking they're a good read.

The next time you make a cake cut the top bit off to give yourself a flat surface to work with decorating so the goodies don't slide off👍, cutting strawberries in half and putting them around the outer edge was a really good idea I would give it another go.
