It's time to begin our journey watching Fellow Travelers! I know nothing about this show and I'm excited/nervous to see how it will all unfold. NO SPOILERS PLS!!! @@dianefurlong2911 YUP! I wanted to watch FT because of Jonathan, feels like the majority of fans I've seen react to the series were more familiar with Matt--I do love them both but I'm loving seeing so many people fall in love with JB because he's such an amazingly talented & precious gem (plus hot as fuck, obviously). I have rewatched that speech so many times because of that cheeky, little look he gave when he dropped that bit. So perfect.

I came out in 1975 (12 yo), yes I'm an "elder" gay, and I can tell you that even then the hatred for us was palpable. Although my parents were tolerant, there was always the underlying feeling of being a disappointment to them. It got worse when GRIDS (later AIDS) came along and that hate in society spiked and religion was more than happy to push the violence against us. I've been stabbed on two separate occasions, had a gun drawn on me coming out of a gay bar, truncheoned by police multiple times while protesting with ACT-UP and lived through the plague and I AM STILL HERE. As you said Niall, they're never getting rid of us. They didn't then and they won't now. Hugs from across the pond and keep up the good work, your reactions are great, especially with your infectious laugh and drama (the best kind).

This series is quite the emotional rollercoaster, full of so much pain and trauma. I hope people found this to be an accurate representation. I definitely cried every episode, especially thinking of my loved ones who lived through this time themselves.

Based on Jonathan Bailey's other well-known roles, notably the hunky stud in _Bridgerton_ and _Crashing,_ probably lots of us, before learning the plot, expected his character to be a sexually dominant one. Surprise....
@minti196211 ай бұрын
kudos to everyone that invested money and talent to create this critically important piece of work and story telling. This was ( and still is ) the truth for so many. I came out at 18 in 1980. There is much I can relate to including surviving the '80's without dying from AIDS. Back then it was essentially a death sentence for everyone. Go back to the '50's and you see the world we take for granted was an unatainable dream for most back then. Throw in race, segregation and government sanctioned hate and see the world that once was ( and yes still lingers today).

Everything is fantastic about this series: cast, cinematography, storyline, music choice throughout, costume, historical accuracy, direction etc etc. Just amazing all round! I will definitely not give away any spoilers & I look forward to watching along with you. Subscribed! So glad you're reacting to this. (I was one of those that suggested you watch it a few months back). While there was underlying fear and hate for queer people, the reason the government was trying to remove them was because they could be easily blackmailed and be a security risk: e.g., forced to pass sensitive information potentially to foreign agents, or else they'd be outed. Anyway, you're in for quite a ride... tears and all.

Love this reaction. I'm so looking forward to you watching the rest of the series. It's amazing. The novel is very different than the show, but I recommend it. It's good in its own right, even if I feel that the show is better (yes, I'm shocked that I said that too). The series is braver than its source material, imo.
@mark99k11 ай бұрын
So Niall - as many have said, it's gonna be a wild ride, so strap in. Since you don't know the history, you'll be googling stuff. I suggest: Lavender Scare. Senator Joseph McCarthy, and Roy Cohn. It's gonna make you sad, but it's necessary if you want to understand it. There's probably more pure evil in the story than in anything else you've seen recently.

@@minti1962 absolutely - there's so much going on in the performances - Mr Bomer for example uses his facial expressions to convey more than what's in the dialogue (like when he was dictating the letter) or even when he's not saying anything, Meanwhile Mr Bailey use his hands a lot to communicate to Hawk, watch how he always uses them to show affection, then he makes these choices of when he's looking at Hawk and when he "avoids" looking at Hawk.

The set design, the score OMG that makes you go over the top with emotion , the attention to detail everywhere. The background sounds. It was filmed in my home town of Toronto during the pandemic right under my nose and I had no idea ! Street scenes at night I can hear the night hawks screeching in the background. You aren’t looking at actors after 10 minutes into this story. It’s very authentic.

Great reactions as always. But I can already tell this show will absolutely wreck you omg, dont forget to drink water for the tears!! Matt and Jonathan here gave their everything omg. Jonathan in Bridgerton and then on here is such a masterful act!!! Matt IRL is married for years and have kids, Jonathan is very private he mentioned a special someone. The beginning of the show is during the McCarthyism era in US History. They were masking homophobia and discrimination by saying that if you were gay, the communists can use that to blackmail you and force you to turn spy for the government. Which was all bullsht as we all know now. As we all know during these time it was really tragic and awful. The show go through these decades and showcase what those decades mean for LGBTQ+ history. So many people have really lost everything for what the LGBTQ+ community has today. And it's crazy to think that there are still battles continually being fought just for basic human respect.

I gotta keep it real with ya, chief. There is no way in this universe that any American Foreign Service Officer ever lived like Hawk. There is no way he had that kind of access to a senator. Or enough money to build himself a house on Fire Island. No drunken drugged up sabbaticals are ever allowed. He’d be in rehab or fired. And all he has is a little gray hair at age 60 is 1986? There must be some mighty powerful juju in all those lines of coke he did to keep him looking so well preserved. Either that, or a lot formaldehyde in those shots of whiskey.
