the way hawk kisses during christmas makes me soo emotional because he knew that if he failed the polygraph he’d never see tim again
@ShelbyBaby277 ай бұрын
Thank you, thank you, thank you! So many miss that because they only view Hawk as toxic. He didn't tell Tim that he was selected for a reason. He's getting his affairs in order. His government position is his identity as well as his financial security.

i'm a 71 year old gay man and this show has rekindled so many memories. I had a number of friends who died from AIDS and some of those memories were so painful. The indifference of society, . government and even family members who thought AIDS was funny, or celebrating gods way of getting rid of gay men.The onslaught of AIDS related "jokes" I had to listen to.So many gay men of that time hid, hiding,lying and straight marriage. All very similar to Hawk. I think that the indifference of society of that time was more difficult than the disease itself. I have held friends who were dying, comforted their lovers and watching christian groups picketing funerals holding signs that hell is only burning hotter and its gods punishment. When I did come out...I was ruthless... Confronted the family members who were horrible and I was;t kind and it felt FUCKING AWESOME to call them out. Now in America we have fascist poised to kick gay people back in the closet. However,this time we are ready to fight back. Love your reactions and I'm so happy that the work we did in the past has made life better for you young gay men. And a BIG shout out to the lesbian who worked tirelessly to help in the AIDS crisis. Love to all... Peace,its still possible.

The scene of Jonathan (Tim) at 25:48 is probably one of the most replayed in the series. Few can argue how insanely handsome he is.

Hawk doesn’t so much have ulterior notices as he’s overtly cautious. He tries to have control over every aspect of his life and believes he knows the only way to keep yourself safe, which is why he freaks out every time Tim rebels against it. Tim is a much more emotional creature and less willing to deny his true self, and that both scares and angers Hawk. It’s an incredibly toxic mindset and I wouldn’t touch a real life Hawk with a ten foot pole, but it’s understandable why he is the way he is.
@joegotham2710 ай бұрын
while i appreciate your perspective as closer to Tim's, you seem to miss the fact that Hawk actually breaks his own rule (of not 'repeating' the same sexual partner) because he loves and wants to be with Tim. And even if his overriding perspective is that a relationship is not possible, he still keeps going back to him. And it's reflected on the other side by Tim's own compulsion of returning to Hawk over and over

Niall, think back when Hawk tells Tim about the job with McCarthy. He finishes the call saying “Watch out for Joe’s hands”!

Roy Cohn is a real character and as queer as one can be. He was also a despicable human being. He was one of the major characters in Angels in America a two part play and HBO series.

Hawk feels like he owes Lucy's dad, plus he needs a beard even though he easily passes for straight. He thinks not saying he loves Tim is protecting them both.

Your reactions are so great, I really enjoy them! Hawk is cold-blooded about protecting himself. He's also transactional--he always wants something for something. Despite the fact that he'd throw his own mother under the bus to save himself, he does, in his own way, love Tim. As for internalized homophobia, well, there's still a lot more of that around than we'd like to think. As I'm sure you know, oftentimes the most toxic homophobes turn out to be gay themselves--such was the case with Cohn.

If you're only going to read one chapter of the book, read the polygraph! It is WILD. Like holy shit levels. Hawk's gifts say so much. He gives Lucy an expensive but superficial gift that shows he genuinely cares about her, but that's it. Conversely, Hawk gives Tim a deeply intimate gift that risks outing him and Tim. He wants Tim to take the dangerous show of his affection so much that he tells Tim to take it, even after Tim initially declines it. The Foley artists (sound designers) certainly had an interesting project in this series! Their trip in the book and the kink in general is a lot less toxic.

Please remember you're judging these characters by today's environment. While I wasn't around in the 50's. I do understand how much the behavior of gay men as a whole has changed from the 70's to today, to understand that the twenty years prior to that would also have very deep rooted changes in how gay (and again short hand meaning all types of queer people) behavior and society acceptance would be compared to my time in the 70's. Just thank that when Hawk had Skippy right that letter he isn't just protecting himself, his protecting his assistant (whom he is close to) and Tim himself. It's not solely self centered. And when Hawk takes Tim out for the weekend trip his business is working to prevent the McCarthy pink scare (and was doing so before when it was strictly the red scare, so something clearly not based at the beastliest stage on self preservation). Tim for all that he is more open about his emotional state is actively working to persecute both socialist and Queer people of all types. We know Hawk cares for Tim, because we see him doing things that he would have never done with his purely sexual releases. In fact we know Hawk's behavior changed, we know when it changed and we know why it changed. And that is when he is caught sucking his high school lover off. After that is when he cut off that relationship and maintain a purely sexual release pattern. Iy's after that that Hawk because sexual dominant. Tim is the only one up to this point where we see or hear about Hawk even caring about another, and having something beyond just sex. And we know his earlier relationships was sincere as he still holds unto the gift from when he was teen, and that has importance through his adult life. And yes Hawk puts his professional life and wants, above his personal wants. Clearly if he didn't want the life of influence he could likely have a quiet more sheltered and more open (though not by today's standards) life. But that is still something that is very common this day. How many fully open gay people of today don't last with their partner just because they both want different things from their life. But to have the type of life he wanted. It required playing in to the rules of society. Tim all of the fact that we like his openness, and like that he is more willing to push for dramatic changes (still is working against gay people) and living life that if he didn't have someone who is very actively pushing him and teaching him how to survive and work in this society (and educating him on the wrongs of who he is working for) would never last in his position to make those changes. And let's not also forget that not only on the professional side. But if Hawk wants a family (the show at this point doesn't really indicate if thats a desire or not) but if he does. The closest and a wife is the only real way in the 50's to have and keep a child for someone who is gay (minus the wife or mother being deceased). Hell even if that if you were discovered to be gay and sole parent to a young child. courts would almost always (if someone sued) give custody of child to one of the sets of grandparents then an openly gay man. And we talk about Hawk manipulating Tim (which yes he does) we clearly see in multiple episodes how Tim manipulates Hawk to get his way. It's another way pot showing that Hawk does actually care for Tim. Would he have been manipulated into taking Tim to that first party if he didn't care? Nope. Would he take a vacation with him (even if he also did work) nope. He Ould have gone by himself and just had random hookups. Would he go out in public an die with him? Nope. All examples of how Tim has manipulate Hawk to get him to show that he does really care. Both characters are flawed. Hell Marcus is also shown to be a very flawed character, and thats a better example of a more healthy relationship. And his comment to Frankie (not sure of spelling), shows that even he absolutely knows he couldn't have his job if he still didn't play into societies rules. Even if he was as brave as Frankie, he would have never been hired by a major white paper. Hell if he was honest he would have lost his job with the "colored" paper. Having people who can subtly impact change over time on a larger scale and those who can be out on the front lines trying to get immediate and local changes both play an important aspect of societal change. It sucks, but once the plight of gays actually started getting some real attention (there have been brief and pretty much forgotten attempts in the 20's and later), its really started getting some attention in the earliest stage in the 50's before getting actual real coverage (to a small degree in the later 60's). It took people on the front line to make noise at great risk to themselves, but it also took people (who faced far less immediate threat) in the inside who had got to place that they had some influence to even get any coverage that wasn't out right negative in the press both TV, radio and print.. And if those people didn't play the game they would have never got into those positions to have any ability to get coverage out. It would have just ben all swept under the rug with no coverage at all, or like previous coverage which just paints them in the very worst possible light.

@Owain212910 ай бұрын
The Catholic Church was really in support of anticommunism, thus Joseph McCarthy, in the early 50s. Tim holds his faith near and dear, so it's understandable (especially since he's quite young) that he became enamored by the senator. There's also the fact that they're both Irish-Catholic, and, at least in the book, Tim's family is quite supportive of McCarthy, always congratulating Tim on his government position in proximity to the man. There's also parallels to be drawn about how Tim is falling into the Red Scare while simultaneously being affected by the coinciding Lavender Scare.

Niall, looking up the history of the period isn't likely to spoil any of the plot. McCarthy and Cohn were real people; the other characters weren't. Getting a bit of background might actually help you understand what a shitshow that time was for gay people.
