25:00 This show does a good job demonstrating how women were (and sometimes still are) kept uneducated to make them easier to control. Daphne has no idea what the Duke is insinuating in this scene. She doesn't even know sex exists. That's what makes it so extra fucked up when the creepy guy was trying to sexually assault her in the garden, she literally had no idea what he wanted from her. This sad truth fundamentally keeps these girls at a disadvantage.

I've heard plenty of stories and you can find people online talking about their aunts and grandmothers being utterly shocked by their wedding night. Before most people had easy access to the Internet or a good library, if you didn't have a friend or family member who had the desire to educate you then you were often left to come to your own conclusions. The Uneducated Virgin and Victorian England | _Networked Infrastructure for Nineteenth Century Electronic Scholarship, Print Exhibit 861_ "Imagine a new bride so terrified of the 'rude' action her husband tried to commit, she runs home to her parents and asks for an annulment the next day. Imagine a woman going into labor and truly believing that the infant was about to exit her body via the bellybutton. These terrifying circumstances where women had no reproductive or sexual knowledge prior to real-life experience were all a reality, according to Roy Porter and Leslie Hall in "The Facts of Life: Creation of Sexual Knowledge in Britain (Chapter 11)." The digitalized exhibit then continues on to discuss various sex manuals which existed to prevent the above scenarios, and how middle-class women were typically prepared for their wedding night. 20:25- Colin is the absolute *_best_* Bridgerton, imho. I just adore him! He's such a sweetheart and a genuinely good man 🥰 And I can say this now, knowing you've already watched through to Queen Charlotte (but spoilers for anyone who hasn't finished season 2 yet)... I think he was greatly misunderstood when it comes to "the comment" he made at the end of season 2. Even on my first watch, I took it completely differently than most other people seem to have, and the more I've rewatched it and considered his character arc, the less the common interpretation makes sense to me. The general opinion seems to be that he was dissing Penelope, putting her down to save face in front of those men. That he was saying she was undesirable, and that the idea of him courting her was laughable. And it's understandable that Penelope (and the audience) took it that way. But he didn't actually say any of that, and none of it fits with anything else we've seen from him. We have never seen him be anything but admiring of Penelope, even in awe of her at times (including staring into her eyes for way too long in the infamous "what a barb" scene this season). There's absolutely nothing to indicate that he has anything but the highest opinion of her. But the fact is, he's been best friends with Pen since they were children, and he's several years older than her. So while it's perfectly normal for, say, a 13-year-old girl to have a crush on her best friends older brother, it would have been creepy if that 16-18 year old boy had seen her the same way. He's always seen her as a sister, and nothing has yet challenged that view of her. He wouldn't dream of courting her just as he wouldn't dream of courting Eloise or Francesca. Not because she's undesirable or somehow not good enough for him, but simply because he doesn't have her in that category. Besides, Colin doesn't have any trouble gaining social approval- he's a handsome, popular, charming Bridgerton. If he were courting her it would improve her social standing before it would diminish his. What he _does_ struggle with, though, is his own internal sense of self-worth, completely apart from how he is viewed in society. And much of the worth he _does_ feel he has comes from protecting and taking care of Penelope. He was on a particular high in that regard at that very ball in Season 2- having just confronted Jack Featherington and saved her whole family from scandal. We literally see him basking in the glow of her gratitude and praise afterwards. So it would be a very odd choice for him to completely nullify all that immediately afterwards by trash-talking her to a random group of guys. It simply doesn't make sense for him as a character. It seems obvious to me that it was an unfortunate (and heartbreaking) misunderstanding. Also, at 41:25- I love that Eloise has her own interests and goals, and doesn't care that they don't align with what polite society says she should want. But it's always bugged me that she's so dismissive of Daphne truly wanting those things. She's so convinced that hers is the only way to see things that when Daphne essentially says, "Yes, you're right, childbirth is genuinely scary. But to me it's worth it for the joy of having children" Eloise straight up accuses her of just keeping up a pretense. As if it's utterly impossible that Daphne could actually want children, since Eloise doesn't. It's really quite rude and myopic of her.
